Description

PATENTED NOV. 27, 1906.
P. M. WEGE. PANEL CONSTRUCTION. ArPLIoATIoN FILED 3.4.1906.
UNrrEij srA'rEs PETER M. WEGE,- OF YOUNGSTOWN OF OHIO.
'PATENT OFFICE.
, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GENERAL FIREPROOFING COMPANY, OF YOUNGSTOVVN, OHIO, A CORPORATION PANEL CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 27, 1906.
' Application filed Apri14,l906. Serial No. 309,740.
sheet-metal panel construction; and the obbodying the invention.
jects of the invention are to simplify and strengthen such anels, cheapen the cost of construction, and) obviate exposed rivets or screws.
Fur-ther obj ects of the invention will hereinafter appear; and to these ends the inventionv consists of a panel construction for carrying out the above objects embodying the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts having the general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a panel em- 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line A A of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a' front elevation of a modiication. Fi 5 is a horizontal sectional view on line E E, ig. 1. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view on line Q C, and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of a modification.
In the simplest form of the panel the sheet or plate of metal A, forming the body portion,
is bent as shown in section in Fig. 2, the
. two sides being bent forward to form the high art B, surrounding the sunken anel A and t en carried around the edge for a 3 The top and bottom of the frame or high part are filled in between the parts B by means of the bent plates C. (Shown in section in Fig. 3, in plan in Fig. 2, and in elevation in Fig. 1.) These pieces C may be brought u flush with the sides B but by constructing t em slightly lower the difficulty of fitting around the rounded edges (shown at D, Fig. 2) is avoided, and the appearance of the work is very neat and pleasing.
The parts K are preferably attached by means of screws from the bac as shown in Fi 3 at E.
the modied form of construction shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6 the main plate F is formedwith a reverse bend at each side, as shown m sectionFig. 5 at G, although this sheet ma right-ang e bend at each side, The formed ieces H are then lapped over the sides of t e bent sheet F and referably secured by means of screws IE, passed throu h from the back. The pieces I are now p aced as shown in sectionFig. 6 and in plan and elevatlon in Figs. 5, 4, respectively,
and secured by soldering or by means of screws at E, Fig. 6.
In making panels for sheet-metal furniture, doors &c., it has been the custom to rivet a a e of thin metal to a heavy frame','
showing the panel depressed, or to rivet an embossed panel to a surrounding` frame, both methods entailing a considerable expenditure of labor and requiring great skill in order that the joints and rivets shall not disiigure the work. My invention permits the manufacture of neat paneled work at a minimum of expense for material and labor and exposes no rivets or screws to view on the finished side of the work.
Obviously some features of this invention may be used without others and the invention may be embodied in widely-varying forms.
Therefore, without limiting the invention to the devices shownand described and without enumeratin equivalents, I claim, and desire to obtain bygLetters Patent, the following:
1. A sheet-metal panel construction, comprising a body portion having raised sides, and separate raised ends arranged between thc sides.
2. A sheet-metal panel construction, comprising a sheet-metal body ortion having raised side portions forming 'gh parts,'and separate raised end portions also forming high parts arranged between the side portions.
3. A sheet-metal panel construction, comprising a sheet-metal body ortion having its sides bent outwardly and t en rearwardly to form high parts, and bent plates suitably secured to the body portion of the anel between the high parts forming the si es.
4. A- sheet-metal panel construction, comprising a sheet-metal body portion having if desired, be bent-With a plain as in Fig. 7.
