(Cl. 15-229) This invention relates to dust mops, that is a dust mop having strands of yarn extended from both edges of a band of exible material with a tunnel extended longitudinally through the band, through which a wire coil is extended and with a Y-shaped holder in one branch of which an end of the wire coil extended through the tunnel is threaded and in the opposite branch of which a plug extended from the opposite end of the coil is retained by a latch, the said band having spaced straps with fastening elements thereon positioned to coact with similar straps on an outer band also having strands of yarn extended from both edges whereby the mop may include a single unit or may also include a double unit, as may be desired.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a soft, ilexi- `le and also durable mop head that may be readily mounted on the end of a handle and also readily removed therefrom in which the mop is detachable from the mounting element and also readily replaced thereon.

Mops have been provided in various types and designs and with the conventional type of mop wherein the strandsV of yarn are secured between twisted wire strands it is difiicult to thoroughly clean the mop head and the mop heads are also difficult tov remove and replace. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a mop head having a wire coil extended from` a branch of a Y-holder with the coil inserted through av tunnel of a band of flexible material from which strands of yarn extend and. with the opposite end of the wire coil provided with a plug adapted to extend through the holder, and aspring clip for retaining the plug in position in the holder. i

The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a mop head and mounting means therefor whereby the mop head. is readily removed fronrand replaced on the mounting means.

Another object of the invention is to provide a mop head having strands of yarn extended from edges of a band of flexible material in which the band with the strands of yarn extended therefrom is adapted to be secured on the end of a handle with a wire coil and in which the band is provided with attaching means for retaining a second band with strands of yarn extended from sides thereof on the outer face.

A further object of the invention is to provide anV improved mop head having strands of yarn extended from opposite edges of a band of flexible material in which the band of flexible material is adapted to receive a wire coil extended from the end of a handle and in which an additional band of flexible material with strands of yarn extended from edges thereof is adapted to be attached to the former band in which the mop head is of a simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in View the invention embodies a band of material, such as canvas, having a tunnel secured on the inner surface and straps with fastening elements thereon extended from the outer surface and having strands of yarn ex- Patented Mar. 18, 1958 tended from edges thereof, a second band, also of canvas or the like and having spaced straps with fastening elements therein adapted to coact with the fastening elements of the straps of the former band and also having strands of yarn extended from edges thereof, a wire coil having a plug extended from one end, a wire holder having two branches extended yfrom a stem. or shank and positioned with one end of the wire coil secured in one of the branches and with the plug on the opposite end of the wire coil extended through the other branch and the stem or shank, which is adapted to receive a handle, is provided with a latch for retaining the plug in position in the holder.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a sectional plan extended through the mop head showing the bands of flexible material with strands of yarn extended therefrom mounted on a wire coil, one end of which is secured in a branchconnection of a wire holder and the opposite end of which is provided with a plug extended through the holder, a clip positioned on the holder for retaining the plug therein, and a handle extended from the stemV or shank of the holder.

Figure 2 is a side view of the mop with the parts as shown in Figure 1 with the cleaning element removed.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of a holder for the mop with the parts shown on an enlarged scale.

Figure 4 is a cross section through the holder taken on line 4 4 of Figure 3.

Figure 5 is a view taken on line 5-5 of Figure l showing the inner surface of one of the yarn mounting bands.

Figure 6 is a cross `section through the band taken on line 6 6 of Figure 5.

Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved mop head of this invention includes a band 10 of flexible material, such as canvas, an inner band 11 alsov of flexible material, such as canvas, secured to the edges of the former band, such as by stitches 12 and 13, providing a tunnel, spaced straps 14 also secured to the edges of the former band 10 by fastening means, such as stitches 15 and 16, and suitable fastening elements 17, such as snap fasteners mounted in the strap 14 and positioned to receive similar fasteners of another similar band.

The mop head is also provided with an auxiliary band 18 having spaced straps, similar to the straps 14 and also having complementary fastening elements positioned to coact with the fasteners 17 for temporarily securing the auxiliary band to the outer surface of the former band.

Strands of yarn, as indicated by the numerals 19 and 20 are secured between and extend from the edges of the bands 10 and 11 and similar strands of yarn 21 extend from upper and lower edges of the auxiliary band 18. With the two bands secured together the complete area in the center of the mop is substantially filled with strands of yarn whereby a complete mopping surface on both sides of the mop head is provided.

The mop head is carried by a wire coil 22, one end 23 of which is threaded in a branch 24 of a holder 25 and a similar branch 26. of the holder is positioned to receive a plug 27 upon which the opposite end 28 of the wire coil is secured, as shown in Fig. 3. The branch 26 is provided with a counterbore 29 that is positioned to receive the end 28 of the coil and the extended end of the plug 27 is provided with an annular groove 30 that is adapted to receive a prong 31 extended from a spring clip 32 slidably mounted on the shank 33 of the holder. The extended end of the clip 32 is provided with a lip 34 to provide gripping means by which the clip 3 may be withdrawn when it is desired to release the plug 27 of the coil.

The shank 33 of the holder 25 provides a socket for receiving the end of a handle 3S and the handle may be secured in the socket of the shank with screws, as indicated by the dotted lines 36.

By this means a mop head is provided in which a plug on the end of a wire coil extended from a holder may be threaded through a tunnel on the inner surface of the mop to mount the mop head on the end of a handle and in which an additional mop unit is adapted to be attached to the former unit with snap fasteners or the like.

The plug 27 is provided with grooves 37 for receiving the convolutions of the coil 22 and the body of the holder 25 is provided with an opening 38 through which the end of the plug 27 extends, as shown in Fig. 3.

In use mop heads are provided with holders on the ends `of handles and with wire coils extended from branches at one side of the holders and adapted to extend around, in the form of a horseshoe with a plug on the opposite end of the coil extended through an opening in the holder and retained in the holder with a latch.

The units of the mop head are formed with bands having strands of yarn extended from opposite edges and with one band having an inner strip of material secured, such as at the edges, to the edges of the band forming a tunnel that is adapted to receive the wire coil whereby with the plug 27 removed from the holder it is adapted to be inserted through the tunnel and replaced in the opening of the holder. When it is desired to use a heavier mop an additional unit also including a band with strands of yarn extended from edges thereof is mounted with snap fasteners and the like on the outer surface of the former um't. The yarn retaining bands are, therefore, readily mounted on the mop head and also readily removed therefrom.

The clip 32 for retaining the plug on the end of the coil in the holder of the handle is adapted to be actuated by a thumb of one hand whereby the projection 31 is inserted in the annular groove 30 of the plug 27 or whereby the projection is removed from the groove.

It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

l. In a mop head, the combination which comprises a handle, a holder having a socket in one end for receiving the end of the handle and having angularly positioned branches extended from the opposite end, one of the branches being socketed and the other branch being a hollow tube, a mop unit including a band of flexible material, strands of yarn extended from edges of the band of flexible material, an inner band also of llexble material secured by the edges thereof to the edges of the band upon which the strands of yarn are positioned and providing with the band of llexible material a space therebetween, a wire coil extended through the space bctween the inner band and band upon which the strands of yarn are positioned, one end of said wire coil being secured in the socketed branch of a holder, a plug having convolutions thereon to receive the opposite end of the wire coil secured in the opposite end of the wire coil and extended through the tubular branch ot the holder, and a spring clip on the holder positioned to coact with the plug for retaining the plug in the holder.

2. In a mop head, the combination which comprises a handle, a holder having a socket in one end for receiving the end of the handle and having angularly positioned branches extended from the opposite end, one of the branches being socketed and the other branch being a hollow tube, a mop unit including a band of flexible material, strands of yarn extended from edges of the band of uexible material, an inner hand also of llexihlc material secured by the edges thereof to the edges "of thc band upon which the strands of yarn are positioned and providing with the band of flexible material a space therebetween, a wire coil extended through the space be tween the inner band and band upon which the strands of yarn are positioned, one end of said wire coil being secured in the socketed branch of the holder, a plug having convolutions thereon to receive the opposite cud of the wire coil secured in the opposite end of the wire coil and extended through the tubular branch of the holder, a spring clip on the holder positioned `to coact with the plug for retaining the plug in the holder, an outer band of flexible material also having strands of yarn extended from edges thereof, and means for tcmporarily securing said outer band to the former band from the edges of which strands of yarn extend.
