Description

UNITED "STATES,
PATENT i WILLIAM DOYLEH, ALBANY, NElV YORK.
VnvlPaovialvletlrIN I srlols'oim.;-V IRON Pipes',
Specification forming partof Letters Patent-No. 28,6lfdated May 15,1860.
hereby declare that the following isa full, v.
clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which?- Figures 1 and 2 are vertical central sections of my invention, the two planes of section crossing each other at right angles; Fig. 3,a detached vertical section of the flask of ithe same, and the means for forming the mold of the male screw, which is at lone end of the pipes to be cast; Fig. l,an enlarged detached view of the core-bar; Fig. 5, a detached plan or top view of the flask; .figsz'f6, andi 8; detachedviewsP of the parts employed for Aforming the molds of the screws at the ends of the pipes to be cast.
Similar letters of reference indicatec'orre sponding part-s in the several figures.A
The object of thisy invention is to obtain a `machine by which green-sand molds for casting pipes may be expeditiously .formed and the rpipes cast in a vertical position, the d-iieulty hitherto attending the shrinking and bending of the corebar avoided, and the mold enabled to be formed at its ends with male andk female screw molds, so thatthe pipes may be casty with the screws.
The invention is applicable to the forming of molds for cylindrical, polygonal, elliptical, or other shaped pipes.
To enable others vskilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents Va rectangular lframe having two longitudinal parallel bars,a a, on its upper en d,l on which ways b b b b.' are formed. On
the ways b b'there is placed a frame, B, of
rectangular form, and'having a traverse-bar, c, in its upper part, said bar c having a socket, d, at its center,in which the hub e'of a bevel-wheel, C, is iitted, and retained therein by pins f,
-which pass through the socket d and into a bevelwheel passes, ther-eb connecting the bevel-wheel to the screw an causing thelat-l ter to turn with the former. To the lower'end of the screw D there is attached ahollow cyl inder, G, which is a triie smaller in diameter than the pipes to be cast, and to itslowerend a cutter, H, is secured. This cutter is of tubular form, its lower end being its cutting'-` fcdge, and its upper end is secured on the lower end ofthe cylinder G. The upper part of the cutter H is slightly larger in diameter than the cylinder G, and the lower cutting-edge ofthe cutter is a trifle smaller in diameter than the interior of the cylinder G. (See Fig. 2.) l In the lower part of the fralncB is provided a traverscbar, k, through the center of which the cylinder G passes, the former serving as a bearing for the latter.
isa rod,fwhicl1is fitted within the hollow screw This rod passes througha crossbar, l. at the upper part of the frame B, and is sustained by albutton, m, on its upper end. The lower end of rod I has a small socket, n, at itslower'end, said socket being provided with an internal screw, the object of which will be hereinafter described.
-Jlis aiiasl ,which is simply a -bor of rect-- angular form, provided .with a horizontal ange, 0.at two opposite sides of its upper end, said flanges resting. on the ways b b of the bars a of the frame A, as shown-clearly iu- Fig. 1.` Both the frame l5 andthe flask .I
bars p p are attached, each cross-bar having a i ring,"q,'at.its center. The sides of the flask which are provided with the ilanges o are rather higher than the other two, and the cross-bars p are secured to the Vlower sides.
The ilask J may be adjusted underneath the frame B, and is placed in such position when the machine is in use.
each link rr'-is of a diameter equal to the diameter of the core when the latter is completed. The bottom o of the flask .I is secured to it by hooks w, or other equivalent device,
K is a core-bar, which is formed of a series snuit-Lully.as hereiia descr d.,
