To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD J. NYE, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dollar Bay, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copper-Billet Molds; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in copper billet molds.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of copper billet molds and to provide a simple, practical and eflicient mold designed for molding copper bars or billets and capable of enabling the same to be molded of a considerable length without liability of the copper splashing in the bottom of the mold and against the sides thereof and producing what is known as a cold set piece of copper whichtcannot be used in the manufacture of copper requiring the rolling or drawing of the metal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a copper billet mold of this character adapted to permit the molten copper to be poured into the mold while the same is in a horizontal position and without splashing and capable of being brought gradually into an upright position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, in which is illustratedthe preferred embodiment of the invention, the copper billet mold, which may be made of various sizes for molding round billets or rods or bars, consists of a cylindrical body portion 1 provided at one end with an end wall 2 and having a semicylindrical extension 3 at the other end 4,
which is open and which is preferably beveled or taperedv at the inner end of the semi-cylindrical extension. The cylindrical body of the mold is provided at opposite sides with trunnions 5, which are adapted to be mounted in suitable bearings 6 of a stand or support 7, whichmay'be of any desired character. The mold may be constructed of copper, cast iron or other suitable material and when made ofcopp'er. will be provided with relatively thick walls so that there may be no liability of the copper bending when pulling or otherwise removing the billets from the mold. The trunnions may be cast integral with the mold or consist of pins cast in themetal of the mold and are preferably of steel whenqthe mold is constructed of copper.
The end wall 2 is provided with a central opening S-rreceiVing a removable tapered plug 9 forming a closure for the opening and projecting beyondthe end wall 2. The projecting plug forms a stop, as hereinafter explained, andit is-removable to facilitate the removal of thebillet from the mold when necessary. j
The semi-cylindrical extension is provided at the outer end with a removable segmental wall or gate 10.0f semi-circular shape having its inner face recessed at 11 adjacent to the periphery of the end wall or gate and forming a projecting segmental portion 12 to fit in a groove 13 in the outer end of the extension 3, which constitutes a feed trough when the mold is in a horizontal position. The end wall 10 is provided at opposite sides with integral lugs 14 projecting laterally from the outer end of the extension and adapted to be engaged by hooks 15 provided at the inner ends of shanks with loops 16 which are arranged on lugs 17 preferably formed integral With or cast into the metal of the mold. The end 10 is adapted to be removed after the metal has upright position and it will permit the billet to be extracted from the mold.
The mold is provided at its interior with an indicating mark 18 designed to serve as a guide for pouring the metal to the proper elevation for making a billet or bar of copper of the desired length.
The pin 9, which projects from the end wall 2, to form a lug or stud, is adapted to engage a stop 20 of a frame 21 for limiting the upward movement of the bottom end of the mold so that the mold will occupy a horizontal position when the same is arranged for pouring the metal into the extension. The mold is provided adjacent to its end 2 with a projecting eye 22 adapted to receive one end of a hoisting rope or cable 23 arranged on an overhead pulley 24: and designed to be connected with any suitable operating device. It is necessary to gradually lower the body portion of the mold to prevent any splash which is eliminated by the pouring of the metal into the mold at the extension or trough, and while a simple hoisting rope or cable and an overhead pulley are shown to illustrate one means of accomplishing this result, it will be apparent that various other devices may be used for enabling the mold to be brought from a horizontal position to an upright position either manually or mechanically to secure the desired degree of steadiness and at the same time efiiect a movement of the required speed. The frame and. the stand are shown separate in the accompanying drawings, but the parts may be mounted in any desired manner, as will be readily understood.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described including a stand, a mold comprising a body portion open at one end and a longitudinal trough extending from the open end of the body, said mold being pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends and supported by the stand, a removable closure for the outer end of the trough, and hoisting mechanism connected with the body of the mold for swinging the same from a vertical to a horizontal position.

Acepper billet mold including a cylindrical body closed at one end and pivotally mounted at the other end and provided at the pivoted end with a longitudinal semicylindrica'l extension adapted to form a trough when the body is in a horizontal position, a removable segmental closure for the outer end of the extension, said closure be ing provided at opposite sides with lugs,
and hooks pivotally mounted on the extension at opposite sides thereof and arranged to swing into and out of engagement with the said lugs.
3. A device of the class described including a stand having bearings, a substantially cylindrical mold comprising a body closed at one end and open at the other end and provided at opposite sides thereof with trunnions arranged in the said bearings, said body being provided at its open end with a longitudinall Y disposed approximately semicylindrical extension having a removable end closure, and hoisting mechanism connected with the body of the mold at the closed end thereof for swinging the mold from a verti cal to a horizontal position.
i. A device of the class described including a pivota'lly mounted mold open at one end and closed at the other and provided at the closed end with an aperture and having a plug projecting therefrom, said mold being provided at the open end with an extension forming a trough when the mold is in a horizontal position, hoisting mechanism connected with the closed end of the mold, and a stop located in the path of the pro jecting portion of? the plug.
