UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. \VALTHOUR, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DEVICE FOR UNSHIPPING MASTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,592, dated August 7, 1883.
Application filed April 10, 18%3. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. WVALTHOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and 5 State of California, have invented a new and useful Device for Unshipping Masts of Sail- Boats, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a means whereby the masts of sailboats and oth IO or small craft can be raised and lowered and the end stepped with ease and rapidity. I
accomplish this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section through a I5 small boat, showing the mast stepped. Fig. 2 is the same, showing the mast unshipped. Fig. 3 is a top View of the step, and Fig. 4 is'a front view of the mast-retaining ring.
Similar letters of reference are used to indi- 20 cate like parts throughout the several views.
Heretofore masts for small sailing craft have been held to the thwarts by means of a latch or hasp, which is keyed to the thwart, necessitating the removal of the key and opening 25 of the latch when the mast is lifted from the step and let go, rendering it liable to lose control of the mast entirely, especially in rough weather, in unshipping, and difficult in raising and shipping the mast into its step. 0 My invention consists in providing a swinging truss in which the mast is set, and in which it is raised or lowered, while the end of the mast rests in an open step.
A is the truss or ring, which is pivoted to 3 5 the thwart or lioodB by means of right-angled ward throw whenit is being unshipped or set 4 5 up. The step F is connected to the bottom or keel of the boat, and is an open step, opening forwardly, as shown, for convenience in shipping or unshipping.
Having thus descrlbed my invention, what I 5o claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ]S-- 1. The combination, with a mast and its step, of a ring or truss pivoted to, the thwart and adapted to receive the end of the mast and 5 5 turn on its pivotal points in raising or lowering the mast, substantially in the manner as herein set forth and specified.
2. In combination with the mast of a sailingvessel, the pivoted ring or truss and the open 60 step, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner as herein set forth and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
JOHN F. VVALTHOUR. [L s.]
