ICE-CREIEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,305, dated July 31, 1883.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON GEIGER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on an Ice-Greeper and I do hereby declare that the following description of my invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has general reference to improvements in ice-creepers; and it con- .sists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings already referred to, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is aperspective view of a shoe having my ice-creeper attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the icecreeper detached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 a plan of the same.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
A designates the heel of a boot or shoe.
B is a metallic plate, having on its rear a curved guard terminating in a projection, G, and in front a projection, D, having apertures for the passage of two fastening-screws, E. In the rear projection or lug, O, is an aperture, through which is passed a micrometer or other similar screw, F, having on its lowerxend apoint or analogous part, f. On the sides of the plate B are two upwardlyprojecting guards, G G, to keep the entire apparatus in proper position laterally in conjunction with the 'two fastening-screws E. From the rear portion of the device is forwardly projecting a spur or point, I, which passes into the .heel A, an aperture therein being provided for that purpose.
Points a may be cast or otherwise produced on the forward end of the plate B, if desired.
The screws E pass through the part D at an angle, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the points of said screws tend to draw the plate B close up to the heel A.
It will be readily observed that in heel'protectors (as such the device described may be used) or in ice-creepers the rear part of such a device is always worn out first. In my present device provision is made for renewing the worn part of the icecreeper, which is accoin plished by screwing the pointed screw F farther into, the rearwardly projecting lug C. This screw, if made of steel'or similar metal, will wear a long while. It gives the wearer an opportunity to walk over carpets, 850., without injury to the carpet, by simply turning the screw F backward, in a manner at once understood.
The entire apparatus can be produced of malleable iron or similar cast metal, and will cost but a trifle to manufacture, so that it can be sold in the market at a minimum sum.
It has heretofore been the custom to make ice creepers the pointed adjusting. or fastening screws of which were set at an incline, use having been made of the fact that these screws will, when thus arranged, draw the plate or creeper toward the heel, and thereby make a secure fastening for the creeper. I do not therefore propose to claim, broadly, such an arrangement, nor do I wish to claim vertically-adjustable points, such having been used before my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States i 7 As an improved article of manufacture, an ice-creeper consisting of the plate B, having projections G, D, and G, said projection 0 having the adjustable creeper-point f, the spur or point I, and the projection D, the inclined pointed fastening-screws E, as and for the use and purpose specified.
