IMPROVEMENT IN SKATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 78,051, dated May 30, 1876; application filed February 5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS DRUOKLIEB, of Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Skate, of which the following is a specification:
"rigidly applied to the heel and sole of the shoe.
The invention consists of improved heel and sole fastening devices.
In the drawing, A represents a skate, the heel'plate of which is provided at the under side with guide lugs 01., in which a slotted plate, B, slides, parallel to the runner in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the skate.
A set-screw, 0, turns in a screw-nut, b, cast at the rear part of the slotted plate B, and carries the same backward when turned, so that its end bears against the runner. The plate B may be moved forward when the screw is turned back. The plate B is cast at the front end with a bearing, 01, for the pivot-pin of a swinging lever, D, that binds, by its broad spurred or pointed edge D, against the front part of the boot-heel, so as to bite into the same, and secure it tightly to the rear lugs D of the heelplate. The set screw 0 allows the adjustment of the skate to any size the skate to the boot-heel, releasing the same when the lever is lowered and the griping of its sharp edge D is discontinued. The front part of the boot or shoe is connected to the skate by an adjustable toe-holder, E; or it may be connected by the sole-binding side clamps F, of which one is set by a clampscrew, while the other is slidden sidewise by a swinging lever, F, havingan eccentric at its fulcrum, which works in a recess of the sliding clamp-plate. The lever F is retained in place by means of a downwardly-bent side lug, f, at the outer end, which engages with the heel-lever D when the latter is seated on. the rest or stop-lug 0f the runner. The front part of the skate is thus, equally with the heel, reliably secured to the foot.
What I claim is 1. The slotted plate B, sliding in guide-lugs at, having a nut, b, with screw, 0, and provided With a bearing, d, in combination with swinging lever D, having the pointed edge D, heelplate having rear lugs D, and runner having the stop-lug e, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of side clamps F, swinging lever F, having eccentric stud f and a downwardly-bent lug, f, and the heel-lever D, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JULIUS DRUCKLIEB.
