UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL WINSLOW, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
SKATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,849, dated October 6, 1885.
Application filed June 6, 1885. Serial No. 167,880.
To all whom-it may cortcern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WINSLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to roller or other skates, and the purpose thereof is to provide simple and efficient clamping devices for fastening the toe portion of the skate to the foot, the intention beingto use said clamping mechanism in connection with any suitable heel-fastening-such as an instepstrap. This invention is especially applicable to skates designed expressly for ladies use, the prevailing form of heel applied to ladies boots rendering it impossible to attach the skate by a heel-clamp.
My present invention consists in the several novel features of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely pointed out in the claim, the same being an improvement upon the invention shown in the application for Letters Patent filed by me January 24, 1882, Serial No. 153,894.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a skate, the rolls being removed. Fig. 2 is a View partly in vertical longitudinal section and partly in elevation.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the foot-plate, which is of the usual form, and provided with any suitable form of bracket or hanger to carry the rolls or the runners as the case may be. Upon each side of this foot-plate, not far from the forward bracket, are arranged clamping-jaws 2, which are carried by arms 3, the latter being curved inward and rearward, and having slots 4, which receive headed guidepins 5, passing up into the foot-plate.
The arms 3 are prolonged toward the shank portion of the plate, and their ends are united by a pivot-bolt, 6, which moves in a slot, 7, formed in the central longitudinal line of the foot-plate.
Upon the pivot-bolt 6 is pivotally mounted a clamping-lever, 8, having its end prolonged somewhat beyond the fulcrum, and provided with a boss or threaded eye, 9, which is pivoted upon the prolonged end of said lever. This boss receives one end of a 5 5 bar, 10, which is tapped into it, and the oth- (N 0 model.)
or and reversely-threaded end is received by a boss, 11, having a foot-piece, 11, which is centrally pivoted on the foot-plate 1, considerably in rear of the united ends of the clamping-arms.
The connecting-bar 10 is provided with a central corrugated ring, 12, or any other suitable construction, whereby it may be revolved in either direction to diminish or increase the distance between the one boss and the other.
By increasing the distance the clamps or jaws 2 will be thrown outward, and are thereby adjusted to fit a broader foot, while by dilninishing the distance they are drawn inward toward the foot-plate.
In both cases the adjustment affects the degree of throw given to the jaws by the action of the lever, and gives lateral adjustment to the jaws to suit the foot of the wearer.
Upon the heel of the plate is attached the counter-plate 13 and heel-strap 14, both being of the usual construction.
By the construction and combination of parts described I provide an exceedingly simple and valuable skate for ladies.
The centering of the united ends of the clamp-arms gives an accurate position to the foot upon the skate, and the clamp may not only be adjusted to fit the wearer with per feet accuracy, but is operated with great ease, requiring but little strength, and the skate is fastened and removed in an instant.
What I claim is The combination, in a roller-skate, of the foot-plate 1, having the central longitudinal slot 7, the pivot bolt 6, arranged to move in said slot, the front clamping-arms, 3, guided at their outer ends beneath the footplate and connected at their inner ends to the said pivot-bolt, the lever 8, connected with the pivot-bolt and having a short arm extending beyond the said pivotbolt, the screw block or eye 9, swiveled on the short arm of the lever, the screw block or eye 11, centrally swiveled to the rear part of the footplate, and the right and left screw engaging the said screw blocks or eyes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL WINSLOW.
