Description
(No Model.) I J. E. EVANS.
. 1 HARNESS TUG HOOK.
No. 281,987. I Pate'nted July 24, 1883.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES: g;
UNITED STATES PATENT" OFFICE.
JOHN ELIAS EVANS, OF SPANISH FORK, UTAH TERRITORY.
'HARNESS-TUG Hook.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,987, dated July 24, v1 883.
Application filedMay 11,1883. No model.) I
trees-one that can be conveniently operated and shall be safe and sure.
It consists in ahookhaving a pivoted tongue, the hook and tongue being formed for connection to the tug, and a spring provided for retaining the parts in position, all ashereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a face View, and Fig. 2 an edge view, of my tug-hook. Fig. 3 is a face view of the spring detached, and Fig. 4 is aview of the hook in an opened position.
a is the hook, and b the tongue, each formed with an eye, a, at one end, and attached together in X form by a pin, d.
e is the bar for attachment of tug f, con nected to a second bar, 9, that passes through the eyes 0 of the'hook a and tongue I), so that they are free to turn thereon, and may slide inward, as shown in Fig. 4., when the hook is opened.
Between the outer ends of the hook and tongue is a U-shape spring, 71, formed with ing upon the bar 7, and also sitting into grooves formed in the hook and tongue ends, whereby the spring is held securely in place and exerts its power to press the eyes 0' apart, consequently holding the beveled end of the tongue 12, against the beveled end of the hook. The end of the hook is made with lugs i, that lap into recesses formed in the end of tongue I), so as to cover the point and prevent its being caught by the single-tree ring when the tugis slackened.
This tug-hook can be readily applied, and will hold securely without danger of becoming accidentally opened.
In place of using aflat spring, as shown, the bar 9 may be fitted with a spiral spring.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The tug-hook, consisting of hook portion a and tongue 1), formed with eyes 0, pivoted together in X form, and fitted with a spring, substantially as described.
2. The combination of hook at, pivoted tongue 6, eyes 0, bar and spring 71, substantially as described.
3. The spring h, formed with eyes at its ends, combined with the hook a, tongue I), and holding-bar g, substantially as described.
JOHN ELIAS EVANS.
