Description

Jan. 14, 1958 A. c. MARCELLUS 2,819,505
SAFETY SHIELD FOR SLIDE FASTENERS Filed Nov. 5, 1953 INVENTOR.
FIDFI C. MHRCELLUS HTTURNEY United States Patent SAFETY SHIELD FOR SLIDE FASTENERS Ada C. Marcellus, New York, N. 51.
Application November 5, 1953, Serial No. 390,286
1 Claim. (Cl. 24-20515) This invention relates to slide fasteners.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved slide fastener construction wherein means are provided which will prevent the catching of part of the garment or undergarment between the teeth of the slide fastener as the slider is moved along.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an improved slide fastener construction having an inner plate or guard which will prevent the garment or undergarment from becoming caught between the slide fastener teeth, the plate being easily and readily removed or attached to conventional slide fastener constructions.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide an improved slide fastener construction which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, is easy to use and efficient in operation.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
On the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a slide fastener construction embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view thereof and showing the same in operative use, parts being shown in section.
Referring now to the figures, the invention is to be used with rows of cooperating fastener elements mounted on tapes 11 by means of which the fastener ele ments are attached to the edges of a garment whereby to open and close the latter, all as well known to those skilled in the art. The usual slider 13a is provided for bringing the fastener elements 10 into operative engagement with each other, the slider 1311 being provided on its upper surface with the usual lug 14 to which a handle 1.5:: is pivotally connected by means of a cut out 16 formed with inwardly extending pinchers 17 which are received within corresponding grooves provided on the opposite faces of the lug 14.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown a form of the invention, wherein a circular concavo-conveno plate or guard 26 is provided which is integrally formed on its upper concave surface, at the center thereof, with an externally threaded stud 27 adapted to be received within an internally threaded opening provided in the bottom of the slider 13. The stud 27 in cludes an extension of larger diameter attached to the guard which provides a shoulder for seating the guard a predetermined distance from the slider. Thus, during operation of the slide fastener construction, the guard 26 will present a convex lower surface whereby to remove any undergarments 28 from the path of the fastening elements It) as they are brought into interlocking engagement by movement of slider 13. The plate 26 may be easily and readily unscrewed when desired for cleaning or replacement.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided an improved slide fastener construction wherein novel means are provided for preventing the garment or undergarment from catching in the teeth or fastening elements of the slide fastener during movement of the slider, the aforementioned means being easily and readily adapted to conventional slide fasteners for detachable connection therewith.
While 1 have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent In a slide fastener construction, the combination comprising a generally flat slider adapted to connect rows of cooperating fastener elements, an actuating handle pivotally connected to the top of the slider, a guard disposed below the slider, said guard being of a dimension to contain said slider, said guard comprising a circular plate having a concave surface disposed adjacent the slider and a convex surface disposed adjacent the garment or the like, and means for detachably connecting said guard to the bottom of the slider, said means including a stud secured to the center of the upper surface of the plate, said stud having a cylindrical body with an externally screw-threaded central extension of reduced diameter providing a shoulder between the body and extension for seating said slider a predetermined distance from the plate, said slider having an internally screwthreaded socket opening in its under surface for receiving the threaded extension.
