Description
No. 28,186. PATBNTED MAY s, 1860. J. LIGHTPOOT. DOOR FASTENBR.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IN LIGHTFOOT, OF COLD SPRING, KENTUCKY.
DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,186, dated May 8, 1860.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN LIGHTFooT, of Cold Spring, Campbell county, Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Door-Fasteners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and in which- Figure l, is a horizontal section of door and post with fastener inserted. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the fastener.
A is a plate of iron or steel constructed with fangs a, a. The plate is adapted to receive hinged plate or plates B to be used to fold over plate A, when necessary to `fill up larger spaces than ordinary between doors and their door posts.
C is a bolt fitted to pass through the slot in the plate A. The shank o of the bolt is hinged to the plate A as exhibited and is provided with aspring d, by means of which the bolt is kept in the position shown, while at rest, and returned thereto after passage of the door.
Mode of adjustment-The fastener is placed against the door post in such a posi tion that the fangs a, a, may face the post and the end of the bolt C that passes through the plate A may come in contact with the post. The door in closing, by forcing the spring bolt through the plate, passes it and presses the fangs a a into the door post; and when closed allows the bolt to spring in front of it as shown in Fig. l. All force applied out-side the door when the bolt is before the face of it is communicated to the fangs a a which being deeply env bedded in post cannot be forced out by direct action upon them and the door is thus securely fastened.
Then an occupant of a room in which the fastener is applied desires to open the door it is only necessary to press the spring bolt C back and the door is allowed to pass. It will be easily seen that the bolt C cannot be dislodged or shaken down by any shaking or jerking of the door.
I claim as new and of my invention here in and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the plates A and B hinged bolt C c', and spring CZ the whole being constructed, and arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
JOHN LIGHTFOOT. Witnesses:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, FREEMAN NICHOLS.
