NIGHT-LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 281,825, dated July 24-, 1883.

Be it known that I, THnonoR BERGMANN, of Gaggenau, Grand Duchy of Baden, in thevEmpire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Night-Lamps or Lighting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This'invention has for its object to provide a means for regulating the flame of a lamp or lighting device, so that when not in use the flame may be lowered, and when required for use raised, by suitable means 5 and to that end the invention consists of a regulating-sleeve applied to the wick-tube of a lamp or lighting device, and mechanism whereby the flame is raised or lowered within certain limits.
My invention further consists of certain details of construction, which will be hereinafter described, and. pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts, Figure 1 rep-. resents a vertical central section of my improved lamp or lighting device, showing the flame lowered. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the device in use, part being broken Fig. 3 shows a vertical section of a modified construction of the same.
The night-lamp or lighting device is con structed of a receptacle or fount, A, to contain any burning-fluid, and of an open hollow base, B. The wick-tube G is secured to the top plate, a, by a thimble, I), encircling it and screwing into a bushing, d, of the top a, or in The side wall of the receptacle A is continued above the top plate, a, in the form of a bulging band, E, having slotted openings e, which afford draft to the flame. A removable hood or dome, F, rests by means of a bead, f, upon the band E, the flange of the dome F depending inside the band E a short way. The top of the hood F is inclined and provided centrally with an opening, G, for the passage of the flame. The inside of the top ofthe hood F is lined with some fire-proof material-such as asbestusso as to protect the metal of which the top is composed. The hood F serves to partly obscure the flame, and by being removed ready access is had to the wick-tube and to the fount when filling the same.

sleeve, H to which is secured a downwardlyextending rod, 71, which passes through a tube, g, in the fount A, and which carries at its lower end a weighted block, I, that is adjustable on the rod 71. by means of a screw-thread.
Near the angle of the bent part of rod h is a stop device, Z, .which is adjustable by means of a set-screw, Z. The stop Z has a lip, 2 which abuts against a flange on the thimble 0, whereby the vertical movement of rod h is limited. The vertical movement of rod 71. may also be limited by adjusting the weighted block I, in which case the stop device is dispensed with.
The operation of my device is as follows:
When the lamp is raised by the hand, the weighted block I drops, so as to depend partly below the base B, and draws down the rod 71, carrying with it the sleeve H, so as to bring it even with the top of the wick-tube, thereby causing the flame to enlarge and rise up through the opening G. Upon placing the lamp on any suitable resting-place the depending block I strikes thereon and rises, thereby pushing up the sleeve H, by means of the connecting rod 71, past the flame, so as to lower the flame without extinguishing it. It will be seen that the degree'of enlargement of the flame or lowering of the same may be regulated by adjusting either the block I or the stop device I, which limit the distance through which the sleeve H can pass over the flame.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification of my device. The construction of the lamp and wick-tube is similar to the device in Figs. 1 and 2; but in lieu of the mechanism for operating the regulating-sleeve, I provide a lever, K, pivoted to the sleeve H, and having a handle, k, projecting through a slot in the hood or dome F. The lever K is fulcrumed to a post, p, mounted on a projection of the thimble 1). Encircling the wick-tube G, and between the thimble b and sleeve H, is placed a spiral spring, m, which holds up the sleeve H about the flame and the lever K and handle 7c in an elevated position. When it is desired to raise the flame to project through the opening G in the roof of hood or dome F, the handle is pulled down, thereby lowering the sleeve H and compressing the spring m. Upon releasing the handle is the lever is thrown up by means of the spring, carrying with it the sleeve H.
By the forgoing description it will be seen that I have provided a simple device for regulating the flame of a lamp, which renders it serviceable as a cigar-lighter, night-lamp, or other similar object.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a wiclctube with a sliding sleeve operated by mechanism to extinguish the flame. My device is for a different purpose and accomplishes a different result.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a lamp or other lighting device, of the wick-tube, with a regulating-sleei e operated by a rod passing through a tube in the lamp, and having at its lower end an adjustable regulating-weight, which depends below the base of the lamp and strikes the support upon which it is placed, so as to lift the sleeve to lower the flame, or which drops when the lamp is lifted and draws down the sleeve to enlarge the flame, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, of a lamp fount or receptacle having a hollow open base and a perforated rim at its top, a dome having its inner top lined with fire-proof material, and having a conically-tapering opening, a wlcktube carrying a sliding sleeve, means for rais-- ing or lowering the sleeve, and stops for keeping the motion of the sleeve within certain fixed limits, substantially as specified.
