UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
l FRANK IV. MIX, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB TO TI-IE CORBIN'CABINET LOCK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,713, dated July 24, 1883.
Application filed April 19, 1853.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be itrknown that I, FRANK W. MIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of VHartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinet Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cabinet-locks of that class which have a hooked bolt for use upon roller desks, chests, Ste.; and the objects of my improvementv are to adapt said lock for the use of a flat key and to make an economical and efficient lock. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is afront elevation of my lock with the slotted hub and cap removed, the parts -being shown with the bolt in the locked position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the complete lock, partly in elevation, the plane section being indicated by the line x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of parts of my lock, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the hooked bolt.
A designates a swinging and hooked bolt, which is pivoted to the lock-case upon a suitable pin at the pivot-hole c, Fig. 4. A spring, 71 bears upon one ofthe sides of the lock-case with a constant tendency to hold this bolt in its position for locking. This bolt is in the form of an angle-lever, and is provided with a bearing-shoulder, c, Fig. 4, for engaging the locking-pin, hereinafter described. In front of the lower end of this Vbolt I arrange a longitudinally-moving bolt, B, which is guided by means of the pins or posts d and e. This bolt is adapted to be moved longitudinally by the key in the manner of an ordinary longitudinally-moving lock-bolt, and it is also provided with a set of tumblers, C, and fence b, which tumblers are pivoted upon the post or pin e, and operate in connection with the key and this longitudinally-moving part B in the ordinary manner of tumblers and lock-bolts. Upon one corner of this longitudinally-moving bolt (Model.)
B is a locking-pin, g, which, when the bolt is thrown to the right, as shown in the drawings,
tudinal bolt B is imparted by the key to draw the locking-pin g out from under the lockingshoulder c before the key-bit acts upon the bolt A to swing it backward. As soon as the key is removed the bolt A snaps back into position for locking under the iniiuence of its spring, and may then be used as a spring-lock. By the application of the key to move the longitudinally-sliding bolt B to the right again the bolt A is positively locked.
I claim as my inventionl. The swinging bolt made in the form of an angle-lever, and provided with a lockingshoulder, o, andasuitable talon or edge against which the key acts, in combination with the longitudinally-moving bolt and lockingpin for engaging said locking-shoulder, said longitudinally-moving bolt also having a suitable talon, the talons of both bolts adapted for being acted upon by one and the same key, sub-v stantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the swingingbolt provided wth the locking-shoulder c and spring h, the longitudinally-moving bolt B and the tumblers C, each of said three parts provided with suitable talons .or edges for being acted -upon by one and the same key, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified. FRANK \V. MIX.
