Description

E. SfiYLAND Dec. 10, 1957 COMBINED TYING AND FILLER FRAME 'FOR PAGE FORM OF TYPES Filed Sept 22, 1953 FIG. I.
COMBINED TYING AND FILLER FRAME FOR PAGE FORM OF TYPES Einar Stiyland, Oslo, Norway Application September 22, 1953, Serial No. 381,662 Claims priority, application Norway October 8, 1952 3 Claims. (Cl. 101-404) The present invention relates to a type clamp or tying frame which will automatically adjust itself to various sizes of type pages after the same have been set up into form.
It is an object of the invention to provide a frame of the kind referred to which is capable to be accommodated to type page forms having great different sizes, and which is so arranged and constructed that it may be retained on the type page and serve as filler frames when said page is locked up in the form of the printing machine.
A further object is to provide a frame of the kind referred to consisting of four frame members, two side and two end members respectively, each consisting of at least two portions slideably engaged with each other against the action of elastic means, and having such cross section that in all positions of adjustment said portions at least at the edge portions thereof, present solid portions having exactly even and equal thickness in the whole length of the frame member composited thereof, so that the frame for the use as filler frame offers no reduced or yielding cross sections.
A still further object is to provide a frame of the kind referred to, the members of which are provided with co-operating locking means so formed that two opposite frame members may be clamped in position on the corresponding sides of the type page form and held firmly thereon during the application of the other two frame members.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of the frame members,
Figure 2 is a detail perspective fragmentary view of the adjacent ends of two frame members, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of an assembled frame.
In the embodiment shown in the drawing each frame member consists of two in plane U-shaped portions 1 the branches or legs of which on the inner sides thereof are provided with guiding grooves 2 adapted to receive corresponding ribs 3 on the longitudinal edges of a middle portion 4 so that the portions 1, 1, 4 may be displaced in the longitudinal direction of each other and the length of the frame member thereby varied. In order to adjust the members to conform to the size of the type page form the portions 1 of each frame member are interconnected by an elastic or springy tension member 6 having engagement in eyelets 7, said eyelets being formed at the inner end of the legs of said portions 1. Said elastic member 6 is passed through a longitudinal passage Sin the middle portion 4. If so desired said passage may form a groove in one of the sides of said portion 4. When using an elastic tape as the member 6 this may be secured to the portion 4 at the middle thereof by means of a rivet 8 or the like. When released the portions 1, 1, 4 are forced together so that the ends of the middle portion 4 abut against the outer end surfaces of the ears or eyelets 7. The length of the portion 4 is so adapted that in the last States Patent mentioned position of the portions a minor clearance is left between the adjacent ends of the portions 1 in order to prevent upsetting thereof during the frequent forcing together of the portions by the action of the elastic member 6.
The frame members may be detachably interconnected by means of co-operating locking members of any suitable shape.
In the embodiment shown two opposite members, at the outer ends thereof are provided with hook-shaped protrusions 9 for engagement with corresponding protrusions 10 at the ends of adjacent members. Said protrusions 10 being, however, arranged at right angle to the longitudinal plane of the member. The cooperating locking surfaces 9', 10 respectively have tapered or arc-shaped profile in order to provide lateral guiding therebetween.
When the frame is to be applied on a type page form, frame members having angle-shaped protrusions 10 are applied on two opposite sides thereof, which members after having been elongated in suitable degree against the action of elastic members 6 are clamped in position by means of the angle-shaped protrusions 10 which bear against adjacent ends of said form and are held forced against the same by the action of the elastic members 6. Thereafter two frame members having books 9 aligned therewith are applied in similar manner on the ends of the form, the books 9 being passed to engage the hooks 10, that would be easily understood. The frame is thus easy to apply on a page form of types which are securely held in place and the frame may also be removed therefrom without disturbing said form.
As will be understood the frame members may consist of only two portions in which case one of the members 1 is dispensed with and the middle portion 4, dimensioned with suitable length, is provided at its outer end with a hookshaped portion 9 or 10 respectively, and the elastic member 6 connected between the members 4 and 1 in suitable manner.
In order to compensate for minor differences in the width of the types or the length of the lines composed thereof the member portions 1, 4 on the inner side near the lower edge thereof may be provided with a longitudinal rib having a tapered cross-section and a height approximately 0.004 of an inch, and which during the use of the frame as filling frame may be forced into the material of lines having a minor increasement in length in relation to other lines of the form in question.
I claim:
1. A combined tying and filler frame for page form of types comprising four adjustable frame members each consisting of at least two portions slidably engaged with each other, each of said portions having a cross-section which in all positions of adjustment, at least at the edge portions thereof, presents solid portions having exactly uniform and equal thickness throughout the whole length of the frame member composed thereof, locking protrusions projecting at the opposite ends of two of said frame members, said protrusions being disposed normal to the longitudinal dimension of said frame and including an arm normal to said frame and having a projection normal to said am and parallel to said frame, cooperating locking protrusions at the ends of the other two of said frame members arranged in the longitudinal direction thereof and interlocking with the locking projections of said first mentioned two frame members and elastic means arranged to force said portions of each frame member towards each other.
2. A combined tying and filler frame for page form of types comprising four adjustable frame members each consisting of two portions that are U-shaped in elevation, a middle portion slidably supported between the legs of said U-shaped portions in the longitudinal direction thereof, cooperating tongues and grooves on the sliding surfaces of said legs and said middle portion respectively, each of said portions having a cross section which in all positions of adjustment, at least at the edge portions thereof, presents solid portions having exactly uniform and equal thickness throughout the whole length of the frame member composed thereof, said middle portion having a longitudinally extending channel, locking protrusions projecting at the closed ends of the U-shaped portions of two of said frame members, said protrusions being disposed nor mal to the longitudinal dimension of said frame and including an arm normal to said frame and having a projection normal to said arm and parallel to said frame, cooperating locking protrusions at the closed ends of the U- shaped portions of the other two of said frame members arranged in the longitudinal direction thereof, and elastic means interconnecting said two U-shaped portions and passing through said longitudinal channel in said middle portion.
3. A combined type tying and filler frame according to claim 1, in which said locking projections include cooperating surfaces, said surfaces comprising a tongue on said projection normal to said arm and a groove in said locking protrusions at the end of said other two frame members.
