Description

E. WUERFEL.
y BUTTON. l v No. 281,425. Patented July 17, 188s.
1 i /MZZW- Mm@ ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ERNEST WUERFEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,425, dated July 17,1883.
Application led November 22, 1881. Renewed December 18, 1882. (No model.)
T 0 @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EENEsTWUERFEL, of the city, county, and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification,
This invention has reference to an improved button for clothing of all kinds, which can be readily attached without punching holes through the cloth, and which is reliably held in position without any possibility' of becoming detached.
The invention consists of a button the head of which is made of three parts-a face-plate, an intermediate recessed spring-plate having a tubular shank through which the post of the base-plate or shoe of the button is inserted, the post being engaged by the interior ends of the recessed spring-platev below the conical head of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l rep resents a vertical central section of the head of my improved button. Eig. 2 represents a top view of the head; Eig. 3, a detail plan view of the intermediate spring-plate of the button, Fig. 4, a detail side view of the baseplate or shoe, and Eig. 5 a vertical central section of the button as attachedto the fabric.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the vhead of my improved button, and B the shoe or base-plate of the same.
The head of the button is made of three parts-a face-plate, a, which may be of any material, shape, or iinish, an intermediate re cessed spring-plate, b, and bottom plate, d, the latter being provided with a tubular shank, e. The connection of the face-plate a with the bottom plate, d, is made by an annular overlapping ilange of the former, which is tightly closed around the edge of the bottom plate cl, as shown in Eig. 1, while the spring-plate bis preferably retained by a ilat contact portion of the face-plate, which bears on the exterior l portion of the spring-plate b, as shown clearly in Figs. l and 5.
The spring-plate b is provided with a central opening, b', and radial slits or recesses, so as to form two or more spring-teeth, b2, as shown in Fig. 3.
To attach the button to the fabric the shank e of the head is passed through the same by means of a conically-tapering pin which lis inserted into the shank, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. By this mode of piercing the fabric 'the punching of the fabric is dispensed with. When the shank of the head A has been passed plate or shoe B is inserted into the tubular conical head f of the post f through the centhe ends of the spring-teeth bL spring into an annular groove, f, below the head f of the post f, as shown clearly in Fig. 5. When the post of the shoe is engaged in this manner by the teeth of the intermediate spring-plate, b, an absolutely reliable and permanent fastening for the button is formed, by which the button is not only adapted for the manufacture of clothing, but also for domestic purposes. f I y Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a button, the combination of the head A, consisting of a face-plate, a, intermediate spring-plate, b, having a central opening, b', and teeth b2, and a bottom plate, d, having a tubular shank, c, with a shoe or base-plate, B, having a center post, f, and an annular groove, f2, below the head f, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- ERNEST VUEBFEL.

shank e, and connected thereto by forcing the` tral opening, b, of the spring-plate b, so that through the fabric, the solid post f of the base-`
