This invention relates to improvements in childrens rockers, and more particularly to a childs rocker in the shape of a bird, such as a duck, having movable wings extending from its sides which are flapped by rocking motion of the rocker.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a practical, highly amusing and rugged device of the character indicated, which is of simple construction, and can be made in a serviceable and attractive form at relatively low cost.
Other and more specific objects will appear in the following detailed description of the invention, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary transverse vertical view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure l; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
The illustrated rocker comprises a pair of laterally spaced vertical longitudinal side plates shaped to resemble the profile of a duck. A seat 11 and a seat back 12 are fixed to and extend between the side plates. A hand hole 13 is provided in the seat back 12 for carrying the rocker from place to place. A hand bar 14 is also fixed to and extends between the side plates 10 forwardly of the seat 11. A strap 15 is looped at the forward end around the middle of the hand bar 14 and has its lower rear end fixed under the front of the seat 11.
The foregoing describes the body of the rocker, which is rockably mounted on a base 17. The base 17 comprises a pair of laterally spaced longitudinal rails or bars 16. A stretcher or spacer bar 18 extends between and is fixed to the rear ends of the bars 16 and acts as a safety stop for the rocker body when rocked backwardly. Pivot bolts 10 traverse the base bars 16 and lower portions of the side plate 10 to rockably mount the rocker body on the base 17.
Wing plates 19, shaped like wings, having inner longitudinal edges 19' are horizontally hinged along upper 2,812,943 Patented Nov. l2, 1957 ICC , 2 portions of the side plates 10 by means of coil springs 20 which normally hold the wing plates extended horizontally outwardly from the side plates 10. Springs 20 have their ends threaded into sockets 21 in the inner edges of the wing plates and in bores 21" in the side plates 10.
Similar springs 20 are threaded on the upper and lower ends of forwardly declining pitmans 22. The upper springs 20 are threaded in declining bores 21" on the Wing plate 19, and the lower springs 20 are threaded in sockets 23 in forward end portions of the base bars 16. Thus the rocker body is rocked back and forth, the wing plates 19 are flexed downwardly and upwardly in flapping motions.
The single construction of the described device enables easy standardization of the component parts and mass production of the device.
The side plates 10 may be shaped to resemble the proles of different birds or animals.
Many obvious modifications in the form and arrangement of details may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention, as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A childs rocker comprising a pair of spaced rails adapted to rest upon a floor surface, a vertical side plate shaped to resemble the profile of a fowl positioned longitudinally of each of said rails and having the intermediate portion adjacent the lower end connected to the adjacent rail for rocking movement about a horizontal axis, a seat extending between and carried by said side plates, a horizontal plate shaped to resemble a wing positioned longitudinally and outwardly of each of said side plates and having the inner longitudinal edge hingedly connected to the adjacent side plate, and an upwardly sloping pitman extending along each side plate and the adjacent wing plate and having the lower and upper ends resiliently connected to the forward end portion of the adjacent rail and wing plate respectively.
2. A childs rocker according to claim 1 which includes in addition a hand bar extending between said side plates forwardly of said seat and carried by said side plates, and a strap looped at the forward end about the mid-portion of said hand bar and having its rear end iixedly attached to the under face of said seat.
