ROCKER Filed Nov. 25., 1945 Z-Sheets-Sheet 2 fizz/622707- iii-7'56)": 5. Lia/5225011 Patented Nov. 21, 1944 i U T D STAT Herbert s. JohnsomChicag o, n1. 7 Application November 25, 1943, Serial No.-51 1,663 Claims. (011272-52) This invention relates to rockers or gliders intended particularly for small children and adapted. to serve for the purpose of exercise as Well as amusement. The principal object of the invention is to provide anew toy or rocker-which will be par ticularly pleasing and attractive in appearance and which will be durable in use.
Othero-bjects are to provide a rocker ofthe kind indicated which may be made of comparatively few parts and constructed so that it may be'knocked down for shipping and storage purposes, and to provide a toy or rocker in which the entire structure simulates ahorse or other animal, 1 e Other objects and advantages will appear more fully "from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which i 1 Fig. 1 isa side view of fing'this invention'; i
Fig. 2 is'a plan view of the same; Fig. 3. is a sectional detail taken on the line "3+3 ofFig. 1; Fig. 4 is'a sectional detail taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a sectional detail taken 5- 5 of Fig. 1;' L Fig. 6 is ,a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line I substantially on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2; and 1 I Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line l'l of Fig. 2. a 'As shown in these drawings, the toy' or structure comprises generally two complemental or similar side frames [0 and H which arecon- ,ri'ected together lto"form the complete article.
. being inserted between the boards.f
A seat I! is positioned between the side frames.
and is detachably secured thereto by means of bolts or screws l8 which engage with strips or.
brackets 19 secured to the inner face of the body 'members 'l3as shown in detail in Fig. 4-.. The "seat has a back 20 which is detachably secured tothe side framesby means 'of bolts or screws 2| which engage with strips or brackets 22 secured to the side frames in any suitable manner.
arocker or toy embodyor. member is detachably secured to the side boards l3 by means'of spring clips 24 which engage with studs '25 and the board also rests on additional studs or pins 26 as shown in Fig. '7. This'provides means whereby the board or box may be swung up when the child is placed on the seat and it may also be detached when desired. The side frames may also be provided with tails 21. H
' Each of the side frames is provided with a combined supporting and actuating v member 28 which is preferably made .to simulate the fore part of an animal such as a horse and includes an upperneck and head portion 29 and downwardly extending legs 30. The lower ends of the legs, or the feet, are secured to rockers 3|. Each of the supporting members 28 fits between the end portions of the side frame boards l2 and l3and are'pivoted on short pivot pins or trunnions 32. A cross rod or handle bar 33 extends across between the neck portions 29 and is preferably held in detachable position by dowel pins 34. Th rockers 3! are detachably connected by means of a cross rod 35 which is also preferably held by means of dowel pins 36 so that the rod maybe readily installed or removed. The rear ends of the frame members In and l I are also provided with'supports' 3'! which preferably simulate the hips and legs of the animal as indicated. The upper ends of these supports fit closely between the sideplates 01' boards of theframe members and are pivotally connected therewith by short pivot pins or trunnions 38 extending through the adjacent side plates. The
leg portions 39 are preferably spread apart with ,;placed together and the other parts stacked or placed thereon in disassembled condition s that to complete the structure. the front supporting portion 283 and rear supporting portion 3'! are placed in their respective positions and the pins 32 and 38 inserted. The cross rods 33, 35 and 4| may then be inserted in their respective holes and fastened by the fastening pins. 'Then by bolting A box or shelf 23 is preferably provided on which toys or dishes may be placed. This shelf the seat members in position, a very rigid and substantial construction is provided.
When the rocker or toy is to be used by a child.
the child may sit on the seat and grasp the cross rod or handle 33 and by alternately pulling and shoving on the same, the toy will be caused to rock back and forth. During this movement, the seat moves ina substantially horizontal plane with out any appreciable vertical movement. The ends of the rockers are preferably formed to act as stops to limit the movement, but the lower ends of the spacer members 14 and I5 also serve as ad-' ditional stops to prevent undue movement of the rocker. It will be seen that if the body moves to the right, as shown for instance in Fig. 6," the" lower end of the bar l5 will be engaged bythepair of rear rockers, members simulating rear :portions of the animal extending upwardly from the rockers into the respective channels of the side-frames,- pivot pins through the side frames fondetachably connecting said last named memadjacent rear edge of the front supporting member 28 and will stop further relevant movement in such direction. Likewisaif the body moves to the left, the rear supportingmember 31 will strike the lower end of the bar I4 and .stopfurther movement in that direction.
While I, have shown and described a preferred form ,of my invention, changes may be made in the arrangement of the parts or details of construction without departingfrom the scope there of and therefore Ido not wish to be limited to such construction except as set forth in the following. claims in which Iclai-m: a, l
