Description

' Feb. 16, 1932. E 1345332 CHILD S SWING Filed y 14. 1931 8 Win WM w 0 l 355/7262 Patented Feb. 16, 1932 OSCAR OOTTNEB, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY CHILDS SWING Application fled lay 14, 1881. Serial 10.537389.
The invention aims to rovide a new and improved swing for chil rens use, of such construction as to simulate an airplane, and so suspended that the plane simulation will 5 remain about parallel with the ground when swinging forwardly and rearwardly.
In carrying out the above end, a further object is to provide a new and advantageous frame structure from which the suspenders of the swing are hung, and in this connection,
a still further ob ect is the provision of such structure as to enable the frame to be compactly folded for storage, shipment, etc.
\Vith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, description be ing accomplished by reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 IS a perspective view of a swing constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the frame partially folded.
A preferred construction has been illustrated, and will be rather specifically described, with the understanding however, that within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
The swing frame embodies two substantially A-shaped side frames 3, each of which embodies two upwardly converging side bars 4 and 5 whose upper ends overlap each other, said bars 4 and 5 being connected by a horizontally extending tie bar 6 of any desired form. In the construction shown, one end of bar 6 is pivoted at 7 to the bar 4 and the other end of said bar 6 is detachably connected at 8 with the bar 5. The lower ends of the two frames 3 are rigidly connected with each other by transverse base bars 9 which are rigidly secured to the bars 4 and 5, by bolts or the like 10.
A crown bar 11 extends horizontally between the upper ends of the frames 3, and two pivots pass through the crossed upper ends of the bars 4 and 5 and into the ends of said crown bar 11, one of these pivots being shown at 12 and the other being a duplicate.
An inverted V-shaped frame 13 diverges an outwardly ith the upper portions of the ground as itswings to and Suspender 22 is connected two bars 4, said frames 13 being composed of two upwardly converging bars 14 and a short crown bar 15 secured tothe upper ends of said bars 14. The lower ends of the bars or legs 14 are connected by pivots 16 with the bars 4, said pivots 16 being parallel with the pivots 12. A horizontal tie bar 17 extends between the two crown bars 11 and 15 and is connected with both of them. In the present showing, one end of the bar 17 is provided with a rigidly attached book 18 snugly receivable in an opening 19 formed vertically through the bar 15, and the other end of said bar 17 is centrally secured to the crown bar 11 by means of a bolt or the like 20.
Two substantially parallel suspenders 21, preferably chains, are hung from the end portions of the crown bar 11, and a similar suspender 22 is hung from the short crown bar 15, said sus ender 22 being substantially parallel with t e suspenders 21 so that the relative spacing of the upper ends of thesuspenders is substantially the same as that existing at their lower ends, thereby causing the seat-carrying structure 23 which is con nected with the lower ends of said suspenders, to remain substantiallyfparallel with the The structure 23 preferably simulates an airplane and embodies a longitudinal fuselage-simulating body 24 carrying one or more seats 25,and across member 26 secured upon the front of said body 24 and simulating a plane. The suspenders 21 are connected with the ends of the cross member 26 and the y with the rear end of the body 24. This body 24 is provided at suitable points with foot rests 27 forthe convenience of the occupant or occupants, and to facilitate operation of the swing, hand grips 29 are preferably connected by short suspenders 30 with the suspenders 21. All of the suspenders 21, 22 and 30 are preferably in the form of chains.
By providing the novel construction shown and described, or a substantial equivalent thereof, a swing is produced which will give a great deal of enjoyment, without danger. The body 23 always remains substantially parallel with the 1 ground, no matter how high the same may move during its to and fro swinging, and hence there is no danger of the children falling from the seat or seats 25, and due to the three point suspension of the swing, not only does it remain substantially parallel with the ground, but it cannot tilt laterally, adding another element of safety to the contrivance.
Whenever desired, the frame structure may be compactly folded, and when this is done, the suspenders 21 and 22 may be disconnected from the crown bars 11 and15, as shown in Fig. 2. When the hook 18 is disengaged from the opening 19, the bar 17 may be swung downwardly as shown in Fig. 2, the crown bar 11 then turning upon the pivots 12. The frame 13 may then either be swung upwardly or downwardly, and when the tie rods 6 are released, the bars 4.- and 5 may be swung toward each other, thereby producing avery compact structure for storage, shipment, etc.
On account of existing advantages for the details disclosed, they are preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous variations may be made.
I claim 1. A swing comprising two side frames of substantially A-shape, transverse bars rigidly connecting the lower ends of the legs 'of one frame with the lower ends of the legs of the other frame, a transverse crown bar connecting the upper ends of said frames with each other, an inverted V-shaped frame having its legs connected with two of the legs of said substantially A-shaped frames, respectively, tying means extending from the crown of said inverted V-shaped frame to said crown bar, suspenders hung from the ends of said crown bar respectively, a third suspender hungfrom said crown of said inverted V-shaped frame, and a seat carrying structure connected with the lower ends of said suspenders.
2. A swing comprising twoside frames of substantially A-shape, idly connecting the lower ends of the legs of one frame with the lower ends of the legs of the other frame, a transverse crown bar connecting the upper ends of said framesv with each other, an inverted V-shaped frame having its legs connected with two of} the legs of said substantially A-shaped frames respectively, a horizontal bar connected at one end to said crown of said inverted V-shaped frameand connected at its other end to the center of said crown bar, fsuspenders hung from the ends of said crown bar respectively, a third Suspender hung from said crown of said inverted V-shaped frame, and a seat-carrying structure connected with the lower ends of said suspenders.
3. A swing comprising two substantially A-shaped side frameseach consisting of two upwardly converging bars overlapped at their upper ends, and a tie bar extending horizontally between said bars and detachably connected with at least one thereof, transverse bars secured to the lower ends of said A-shaped frames, a'horizontal crown bar extending between the upper ends of said A-shaped frames, alined pivots passing through said overlapped bar ends and connecting the latter with the ends of said crown bar, a transverse inverted V-shaped frame having one of its legs'pivoted to one of said upwardly converging bars of one of said A-shapedframes and having its other leg pivoted tothe corresponding bar of the other of said A-shaped frames, the pivots of said inverted V-shaped framebeing parallel with the first named pivots, said invertedV-shaped frame having a short crown bar provided with a central vertical opening, a horizontal tie bar having a rigid hook at one end removably received in said opening, the other end of said tie bar being secured to the center of the first named crown bar, suspenders hung from said crown bars, and a seat-carrying structure connected with the lower ends of said suspenders.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
OSCAR COTTNER.
