1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to, and it is an object to provide, a childs swing of novel construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a childs swing arranged so that it not only amuses children, but provides desirable exercise in the operation of such swing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a swing which can be occupied and operated at the same time by two or more children, thus adding to the enjoyment of use of the swing.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive ohilds swing, and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects are accomplished by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will full appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the swing.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the swing.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse elevation, showing part of the actuating mechamsm.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the swing comprises a rectangular base I adapted to rest upon the ground; such base including parallel side beams 2 connected adjacent the ends by cross members 3.
The rectangular base I supports, in rigid relation, an upstanding, open-ended skeleton frame, indicated generally at 4. The skeleton frame 4 includes vertical corner posts 5 merging with longitudinal top bars 6 disposed in transversely spaced relation. The top bars 6 are connected together by cross members I.
The swing unit is suspended from the upstanding frame 4 and comprises the following:
A pair of cross shafts 8 extend between the top bars 6 in spaced relation lengthwise of the swing, and a pair of transversely spaced suspension links 9 are secured to and depend from each of the cross shafts 8, corresponding suspension links 9 of the end pairs being alined lengthwise of the swing.
A horizontal platform l0 extends lengthwise of the swing between the suspension links 9, and the latter are pivotally connected, adjacent their lower ends, to stub shafts II fixed in connection with the horizontal platform by means including transverse reinforcing irons l2 afiixed to the bottom of said platform.
As so suspended the horizontal platform I!) is 2 capable of to-and-fro swinging motion lengthwise of the swing.
Adjacent the center of the platform Ill the latter is fitted with seats l3 disposed in facing, spaced-apart relation, and said seats are disposed within a body It mounted on the platform Ill, and having a fanciful configuration, such as an automobile, airplane, or boat; the latter being illustrated in the present embodiment.
Between the seats I3 the horizontal platform It is formed with a central opening I5, through which an upstanding operating lever I6 extends; said lever being pivoted, intermediate its ends, as at I1, between a pair of ears I8 for to-andfro swinging motion in a longitudinal direction. The upper end of the operating lever I6 is fitted with a transverse handle bar 9.
One pair of the transversely spaced suspension links 9 are extended downwardly below the corresponding stub shaft II as link extensions Zll, and an actuating link 2! connects between the lower end portion of the operating lever l6 and a cross shaft 22 which is fixed in connection with, and extends between, the extensions 28; there being a bearing 23 between said link 2! and shaft 22. The actuating link 2| is vertically adjustably connected to the lever I6, while the cross shaft 22 is similarly connected to the link extensions 29, whereby the effective throw of the described operating mechanism can be varied.
When the described swing is in use, children occupy the seats I3, grasp the handlebar l9 and swing the operating lever I6 to and fro, which motion is transmitted by the actuating link 2| through the cross shaft 22 to the link extensions 29, to thus cause the entire assembly of the device to swing back and forth in a longitudinal direction; all to the amusement and exercise of the children.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a device as will substantially fulfill the objects of the invention, as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention the following is claimed as new and useful, upon which Letters Patent are desired:
A swing comprising an upstanding main frame, longitudinally spaced pairs of transversely spaced 3 links pivoted on and depending from the main frame, one pair of links being longer than the other, a platform, seats on the platform, a pair of laterally projecting trunnions on each end of the platform, one pair of trunnions being j0uI- naled in the lower ends of the shorter pair of links, and the other pair of trunnions being journaled in the longer pair of links at a point above their lower ends, a cross shaft extending between and rigidly secured to the lower ends of 'said longer pair of links, a lever journaled substantially centrally of and projecting below the plat form, a link pivoted at one end to the lower end of the lever, and a bearing on the other end of said last named link, said shaft projecting freely through said bearing.
