SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lIatent No. 281,179, dated July 10, 1883,

Be it known-that I, EDWARD A. COOPER, of the city of Buffalo, inthe county of Erie and-State of New York, have invented'a new and useful Improvement in Coach-Pad Plates, of which the following is a specification.
r1his invention has reference to an improvement in that class of devices whereby the skirt is secured tothe lower end of the metallic frame or plate of the coach-pad, so as to hold it snugly against said frame or plate.
rEhe object of my invention is to produce a fastening of this kind which shall. be simple and strong in construction, and which can be easily cast and readily applied.
Mylinvention consists of the improvements in the construction of the fastening which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coach-pad provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lower portion of the pad-frame with the straps removed. Fig. 3 is a crosssection in line a' a", Fig. l. Fig. 4L is an edge elevation of the skirt-plate. Fig. 5 is a per! spective view thereof.

A represents the metallic frame or plate oi the pad. B represents the skirt, which is secured to the outer side ofthe frame orplate A, and @represents the cover, which .is applied to the outer side of the skirt on the frame A. All of these parts are Secured to gether by a bolt, d, in a .well-known manner. The plate A is provided on its outer side with raised side flanges, e, which are enlarged near y the lower end ofthe frame A, on both. sides thereof, as shown at j'.

vskirt B is secured to the lower end ofthe frame A. The plate I is placed against the outer side of the skirt, with its ends under the lips g, whereby the plate is held to the frame A. The plate I is made tapering or wedgeshaped downwardly, as represented in Figs. 4 and 5, whereby the skirt is iirmly clamped between the plate I and the 'frame A. The plate I is provided with pro]l ecting lugs i, which engage against the upper Sides of the lips g, and limit the downward movement of the plate I in inserting it behind the lips g. 7' represents a stud formed on the rear or under side of the plate I, and entering an opening in the skirt, whereby the plate I is prevented from shifting on the skirt, and an additional support or fastening for the skirt is supplied.
In applying my improved fastening, the skirt is slightly raised on the frame above its normal position, and the plate I placed against the front side of the skirt, with its study' in the opening formed in. the skirt 4for its reception. The skirt is then lowered on. the frame `A and the ends of the plate I introduced be hind the lips g, and the plate I is drawn downwardly untilk it is firmly seated behind the lips g. By applying the cover (l and securing it by means of the bolt d, the skirt is pre vented i`ro1n being raised on the frame A, and the plate I, being attached to the skirt by the stndj,-is also iirinly secured in place.
The frame A and the plate I are each readily cast complete, thereby enabling the parts to be produced at comparatively small expense, and the connection of the parts in forming the pad is also very simple,y and at the same time strong and reliable.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination oi' the pad-plate A, constructed with raised lips or hooks g, with the recesses underneath said lips opening inward ly, and a plate, I, inserted underneath said lips, substai'ltiall y as set forth.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 281,179, granted July 10, 1883, upon the application of Edward A. Cooper, of Buffalo, New York, for an improvement in Coach-Pad Plates, the name of the assignee of one-half interest therein was written and printed Edward P. Sears, that said name should have been written andy printed Edwin P. Sears end that the proper correction has been made in the files of the caso in the Patent Ofoe, and should be reed in the grant to make the same oon form therewith.
