ROIDLESS NAGN-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
` raeentearet. a, reis.
Application filed September 16, 1912. Serial No. 720,553.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS WALLACE MCBRIDE, of the village of Glen Ewen, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rodless lWagon-Boxes, of which the following is the specification.
The invention relates 'to an improved wagon box and the object of the invention is to provide a strong and durable box which can be quickly placed on a wagon and which is particularly free of rods and bolts.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wagon box which will allow grain or other such produce tobe quickly released through the rear end.
lt consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly referred to and later pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the boX. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed end view of the boX. Fig. l is a plan view of the rear end of the boX. Fig. is a detailed vertical sectional view through the boX showing the manner in which the side and end boards are connected. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of the side, end and bottom boards.
ln the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each ligure.
1 represent the bottom boards of the box which are securely fastened to supporting cross pieces 2, a pair of the cross pieces being connected at the ends by reinforcing boards 3 and 4l.
5 represent the lower side boards which rest on the bottom boards and have their sides and ends protected by metallic strips 6.
7 are similar upright channel iron mem bers permanently riveted to the side boards and having the lower ends fitted with eX- tending threaded portions 8 which pass through the bottom boards and are fitted with nuts 9, 'this arrangement securing the side boards to the bottom boards.
10 are the upper side boards of the boX which boards have their upper and lower edges and also their ends protected by me tallic strips l1 and are provided at their lower edges with countersunk plates 12 which overlap the upper edges of the adjoining side boards 5 thereby forming a gram tight joint between the side boards. The upper faces of the boards 10 are coun-- tersunk at 13 to receive if necessary a plate similar to 12 on a further side board if the wagon is to be what might be called three deck. The top side boards l() are fitted with upright channel iron members 14 similar to those 7, the members 7 and lbeing arranged so that they are continuous when the side boards 10 are placed on those 5. All the channel members 111 with the eXception of the end ones are fitted with permanent extending bars 15 which pass in to the channels of the adjoining channel members 7, the bars affording a means forfastening the side boards together.
16 and 17 are the front end boards both of which are protected at the top and bottom by metallic strips 18 and at the ends by T shaped end members 19 Iand 19 arranged to slide within the channels of the forward channel members 7 and 11i.
2() is anend gate formed from three sections 21., 22 and 23 respectively, the sections 21 and 22 being butt-ed together at 24 while the section 23 is permanently fastened to the section 22 and releasably secured to the section 21 by an I bolt 25 which when turned allows the ends of the section to escape and permits the end gate to buckle in the center.
The end gate is supplied with top and bottom protective pieces 26 and has the ends thereof itted with members 27 supplied each with a single laterally extending flange 28 which is arranged to pass into the end channel. members carried by the lower side boards.
rlhe end gate is prevented from rising when closed by lugs 29 which are received within notches 30 located in the channel members 7. Above the end gate is an end when the levers are thrown downto jam againstthe edges of the bars 15 and hold them tightly within the channels. The levers carried by the forward pair of channel members engage with the lower .front end board and prevent it from rising. The channel members 14 are also supplied with levers 36 having eccentric heads 37, the front and back pair of levers being arranged to jam against the front and back end boards while the remaining levers are adapted to engage with other bars similar to those 15 inthe event of a three deck boX being used.
88 is a cross bar having T ends 39 arranged to slide into the channels of the channel members 14. This bar is located more or less centrally of the boX and serves to strengthen the same.
It will be seen that one can quickly put this wagon box together building up as many decks as required by simply placing any number of side and end boards in position-and clamping them with the levers, the first side boards being fastened to the bottom boards by tightening up the nuts 9. When it is desired to release a load from the boX one has simply to turn the I bolt which action allows the end gate to open under pressure the sections 22 and 23 swinging apart and the fianges 28 turning in the channels.
VVhat I claim as my invention is A wagon body of the type described, in-
cluding side and end boards, said side and said channel members, said bar affording a l fastening means for said superposed side members, the latter channel iron members also being equipped laterally with eccentric ended levers, for the purpose stated.
Signed at Oxbow Sask this 14th day of J une 1912.
