PATENT OrFIcE.
ALEXANDER C. JAMESON, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
' euue FOR BEER-B'ARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,830, dated July 10, 1883.
Application filed November I1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER C. J AMESON, a resident of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bungs for Beer-Barrels, of which the following is a specification, having-reference to the'accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a bung which shall be adapted to displace and take the place of an ordinary wooden bung in a cask which is filled with beer or other liquor, and to introduce at the same time to the interior of the cask a closely-folded airtight bag having its interior connected with a tube passing through said bung, and adapted also to release said bag and allow it to unfold and expand freely after its introduction to the cask.
My invention consists, first, in combining with a bung a metallic case formed of separate longitudinal sections hinged thereto and adapted to inclose a folded bag having its in terior connected with a tube passing through said bung, said case being adapted also to have its several sections separated by the expansion of the bag after insertion in a cask, as hereinafter fully explained.
My invention consists, further. in the hereinafter described means for connecting the wooden bung and the hollow case formed in sections, whereby the bung and case, when closed, form a substantial plug or driver for forcing in an ordinary wooden bung, as hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section. Fig. 2 represents an elevation, the bag being shown as folded and unfolded by dotted lines.
a represents a wooden bung; b, a plate secured to the under side of the bung and provided with lugs 0 c, to which are hinged the semi-cylindrical cases d. d.
e is a tube passing through the center of bung a, extending a short distance below plate b, and adapted to receive the neck of a rubber bag. (Not shown.) Tube 6 is provided with a collar or shoulder to support plate I), or it is soldered thereto. The upper end of tube 6 is threaded, both inside and outside,-and projects above bung a sufficiently to receive a capplate, f, which is provided with a central threaded hole and screws onto tube 0, thereby clamping bung a between plates 12 and f.
'The operation of my device is as follows: The neck of the rubber bag designed for insertion in the cask is secured to the lower end of tube 6. The bag is then closely rolled and folded, so that it can be inclosed within the semi-cylindrical cases 01 d, which, when closed together, form a cylindrical case a'little less in diameter than the bung, and completely inclosing the bag. The upper ends of cases (1 (I now rest against the plate I), and, being held together by the hand of the operator, and the lower ends placed on the ordinary bung of the barrel, the same is by blows with a mallet on plate f driven in and the bung a driven home. The rubber bag. is thus introduced into the cask after the cask has been filled. Connection is now made with the air-reservoir by screwing a coupling, g, carried by the end of the tube leading therefrom, into tube e. As the air enters the bag it unfolds and expands, cases (I d swinging outward, as indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 1, and the full lines, Fig. 2.-
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a bung, a tube passing through said bung, and an air-tight bag attached to said tube, of a cylindrical metallic case formed of two or more separable sections hinged to said bung, and adapted to inclose said bag and to be separated by the expansion thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Wooden bung (4, plates 1) and f, tube 6,
and semi-cylindrical cases d (I, combined substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
