` DRAFT FAUCET.
No. 189Mo.
Patented Apr124-, 1877.
N4FETERS. PHOTO-LUHDGRPHER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED 'STATES PATENT GFFICE.
MATTHEW HOGAN, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAFT-FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 189,860, dated April Q4, 1877; application led May 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known` that I, MATTHEW HOGAN, of
V llartford, in the county of Hartford and State hollow 7 plug, preferably a single casting of Y brass or other suitable metal, which may be formed from a to a', for the purpose of tting to the tap-hole ot" a cask or barrel. The letter b denotes a ltube running down through the plug a, its entering-point being made ,liquid-tightV by the' stuflng-box c, having small arms cwc, whereby to handily-turn it. The letter ddenotes connection-tubefor an airpi pe, whereby a pressure of air or gas may be put upon the liquid on draft, this connectiontube opening into the tubular opening in the plug a.
Such pressure of air or gas is generated in a proper generator, and comes by a tube, commonly ot' rubber, to the connection-tube d.
The manner of inserting this draft-faucet for use in a fresh keg of beer, or the like, is to draw up the tube b till its lower end does not project below the lower end of plug a. Then place the lower end of plug a on the bung or plug, which closes the tap-hole, and by blows of a hammer upon the shoulder a2 force the a bung into the cask, and drive the plug a down All this till it ts tightly in the tap-hole. while the cocks e f have been closed. The tube bis now shoved down through plug a till the lower end of tube b strikes the bottom of the cask, after which the stu'fng-box'is rotated till tight and close on its seat. The airpressure tube is now connected to the connection-tubed, the tube leading to the tapvroom is connected to the tube b, the cocks c f opened, and the Whole is ready for use.
lf an air or gas pressure from without is not used the connection-tube or pressure-tube d is not necessary.
I have shown the two cocks cflocated upon the apparatus not essential.
It is essential that the draft-tube b have longitudinal play in the plug d, and that some means-as the stuffing box c, or its equivalentbe used to keep the joint tight between the draft-tube and the plug.
I claim as my inventionl. In combination, the tubular plug a, the sliding draft-tube b, and the stnng-box c, all substantiallyas described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination, the tubular plug a, sliding draft-tube b, and pressure-tube d, all substantially as described,'and for the purpose set forth.
