To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSHUA SMITH, of Ohicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Bill and Letter File, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of files that are intended to tempo rarily hold bills and letters; and it consists of certain novel features in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth in detail.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my improved features; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detached details of construction.

Referring to the drawings, A and B repre sent spring wire-standards, the lower ends of which are rigidly secured to the supportingbase 0, while the upper ends are connected by the detachable tubular arched part D. The upper end of the standard A is provided with the puncturing-point b, the inner side of which is beveled, so as to present a contracted rounded edge, which is adapted to engage with the correspondingly-shaped recess 0- in the front end of the arched tube D. The inner side of this end of the tube D is provided with the lip 00, which projects forward in the direction of the standard A, and engages with the transverse groove 11 in point 1), thereby firmly locking these parts with relation to each other. The arched tube D is adapted to spring into this locked position, and when it is desired to separate these parts the locked end of the tube D should be gently pressed inward, where the same is readily disengaged from the point I) of the standard A and allowed to swing off on either side. Theupper or file end of the standard A, at the base of the point I isfiuted, so as to present a series of sharp edges for the purpose of cutting the paper, whereby the same is more easily placed upon or removed from the standard or transferred to the arched tube D. The back end of the arched tube D is detachably adjusted to the upper reduced end of the standard B by slipping down over the same, the shoulder a preventing the standard from entering the tube beyond the required point.

When it is desired to remove the contents of the file in bulk for permanent filing, the papers should be placed on the arched tube D. Then disengage the tube from the standards A and B and pass the cord or wire d through the arched tube, when the contents of the file may be readily slipped onto the cord from the tube Dina body, and may be conveniently transferred back in the same manner.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The arched tube D, provided with the recess 0, having lip on, combined with the spring wire-standards A and B, the tube D, adjusted to the standard B on the shoulder a thereof and to the pointed file end of stand ard A, which is provided with slot 7, substantially as described.

2. The standard A, having the upper part at the base of the puncturing-point b fluted, so as to present a series of sharp cutting-edges, whereby papers are more readily filed and transferred to other parts of the file, substantially as described. a

8. The hollow removable tube D, provided with the locking lip 00, and adapted to receive the' cord or wire (Z, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
