In the top et of the casing E is journaled the end ot' the turning bar, and within this casing, and firmly keyed to the turning bar, is held the ratchet-Wheel F, which, when moved, serves to impart rotation to the turning bar, and consequently-to the main piston, the drillstock, and the drill. The movement of vthis ratch et-W'heel is effected by m cans ofthe ratchet G, journaled to` the hinge-piece G', carried by the ratchet-piston H, moving within the supplemental cylinder H', which is preferably formed integral with the casing E, and the ends of which are closed by the threaded caps h hf. The piston H is formed, as shown, with the bore if', in which tits 'the rod I, which is held by the cap h, and carries the spiral spring K, the ends of which. rest within sockets in said cap and piston.
In the bottom of the ratchet-casing, as shown in dotted lines, l, 2, and 3, is formed the steam-passage L, which, .by the ports Z and l', connects the front end of the supplemental cylinder H with the top ofthe main cylinder A.' Upon the inside of the ratchet-casing is formed the stud M, which serves to retain the ratchet out oi' gear with its wheel when the ratchetpiston is,.in the forward part of the cylinder, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A spring, mi, attached to the side of the casing, forces the ratchet into gear when released from the stud.
From the construction of parts as thus deined the operation will be seen to be as follows: As the main piston approaches the end of its back stroke, it is met by th'e steam issuing through the upper induction-port, and is forced forward again. At the same moment steam issues from the main cylinder through the passage L into the supplemental cylinder, and in so doing forces back the supplement-al piston, thus compressing the spiral spring K and causing the ratchet to impart to its ratchet- Wheel a parti al revolution, which is communi-` cated to the turning bar, the main piston, and the drill.
