0. GRAY.
PUNCH HOLDER.
No 280,608. Patented July 3, 1883.
v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'oIIRIsTIAN GRAY, or BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
PUNCH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,608, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed November 7, 1882.
city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Punch-Holders, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of punches which are employed for cutting four-pronged barbs from a strip of metal, and which serve to bend the barbs to the proper shape at the same time.
The object of my invention is more particuularly to improve the means whereby the punches are secured in their holders.
Heretofore these punches have been constructed with shanks which were inserted in openings in the holder and secured therein by set-screws, so that the punches could be lowered as their length became reduced by wear and redressing. This construction involved the employment of much larger punches than was necessary to do the desired work, and this invention is designed to do away with all unnecessary metal in constructing the punches; and it consists of the peculiar means whereby the punches are secured in the holder, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a'sectional elevation, of my improved punch. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section in line x 00, Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the head or holder, which is attached to the reciprocating plunger or other movable part of the punching machine by means of a shank, a, in any suitable and wellknown manner.
B and 0 represent two punches or cutters, which are secured in a vertical position in the holder A. The punches B and G are construct ed of thin bars of steel, having the proper thickness tocut and bend the prongs of the barbs, their cutting-faces being shaped to produce a barb of the desired form in a wellknown manner. The upper ends of the punches B and G are inserted, respectively, in recesses b and c, which. are formed in the lower side of the holder A, and which extend outwardly through the sides of the holder, as clearly shown in the drawings. T
(No model.)
D D represent keys, which are also inserted in the recesses b and c of the holder, andwhich bear with their inner sides against the outer sides of the punches B and G, and project with their backsbeyond the sides of the holder.
E E represent clamps or caps, which are secured to the sides of the holder by screw-bolts e, and which bear against the backs or outer sides of the keys D D and press the latter firmly against the punches B and 0, thereby securing .the punches in the recesses of the head or holder A. As shown in Fig. 2, each key D D is provided on its inner side with a projection or tooth, f, which engages in a corresponding notch, f, formed in the outer side of the respective punch. When the face of the punch wears away or is required to be redressed, whereby the length of the punch is reduced, the punch is lowered in its socket of the head A, and another notch, f is cut into the punch above the firstmentioned notch in the proper position to engage with the tooth f of the key after the punch has been adjusted to the stationary dies; or, if preferred, the punch may be provided with a series of notches, as shown in the drawings, and the punch may be dressed so as to register with the dies when the punch is adjusted in its socket. Thekeys D D bear with their upper ends against the head A, and support the punches securely in any position in which they may be placed.
This construction of the devices, whereby the punches are secured in the sockets in the head A, permits the punches to be constructed of flat steel bars which do not exceed in thickness the required working-faces of the punches, and the punches are thereby rendered much lighter and cheaper than heretofore, and the work of redressing the punches is thereby greatly facilitated and expedited.
I claim as my invention- The-combination, with a head or holder, A, provided with a recess opening downwardly and outwardly, of a punch provided with a notch, f, a key provided with a projection, f. and a clamp applied to the outer side of the key, substantially as set forth.
CHRISTIAN GRAY.
