NIT'ED' STATES ATENT DIE FOR FORMING SPINNING-RING HOLDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,938, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed January 12, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. PARKER, of \Vorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Forming Spinning-Ring Holders; and I declare the following to be a description of my said invention, suffieiently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide practical and convenient tools or dies for forming the lips or projections on the annular plates or holders used for retaining the rings of ring-spinning machines; and my invention consists in the improved forming tools or dies,
constructed and operating as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a side view of the matrix-block and follower. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the follower at line to w. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same at right angles to that of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom end view of the follower on a larger scale. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the matrix-block or lower die. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of one side of the matrix-block at line w m, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 represents plan and side views of a spinning ring holder, indicating the nature of the work performed by my improved tools, and showing the relative size and form of the annular plate or holder-ring M, and the positions, size, and shapeof the portions which are cut from the inner edges of the plate and bent outward in the form of lips or flanges m. It is essential that these holders should be of uniform size and contour, in order to receive the spinningmachine rings and retain them securely in place, and also at the same time to permit of such spinning-rings being sprung into and from the grasp of the holder-lips m; hence the necessity of dies or tools whereby uniform lips or flanges m can be quickly and accurately formed.
In the references to drawings, A denotes the matrix-block or female die, and B the follower or male die. These dies or tools are adapted to be used in and be operated by an ordinary machinists punching-press-such as is employed for general machine-shop work--or in any suitable reciprocating power press, the matrix-block A being firmly supported on the bed 0 of the press, and the follower B attached to the reciprocating head of the press 0, to work up and down into and from the central opening, A, of the block A. The matrix A is made of circular form, with side enlarge ments, m, corresponding to the required dimensions of the lips or flanges m on the ringholders M to be formed. At the back of the enlargements the block is provided with steel benders D, radially grooved into and adjustably secured to the block A, so that they can be set inward or outward, as required, for accuracy of work, or to bring their rounded an gles d or bending-surfaces nearer to or farther from the center of the matrix.
At the right and left of the benders l) are formed sharp cutting-an gles or shearing-edges at. These are in the present instance formed on the ends of adjustable steel plates E, which are dovetailed or otherwise fitted into the side bars or plates, F, that cover the upper side angles of the matrix-block A, and form the anvilsupport or wearing-surface for the rings M while being formed. The plates E can be removed, and their edges aground, and the plates afterward readjusted when said cutting-edges a become worn away or dulled, if. desired. The bars F are inserted in a recess in the top of the block A, and are retained by screws f, or other fastenings. The plates D are retained by the screws h.
The follower B is made with a conoidal head or point, B, which serves for centering and holding the rings Min place upon the die close together, the base of said point and the shaft of the follower being of a size to correspond with the matrix A. A steel cutting and bending bar, I, is fixed in the follower, as shown, with projecting ends corresponding to the matrix-enlargements m, and provided with rounded bending-angles across its ends at t, and with sharp cutting-angles at j j, which work in connection with the cutting-edges a a for making cuts into the metal of the holderrings M at the positions indicated at 70, Fig. 7. The bar or cutter I is in the present instance made with a central opening and a boss, 9, on its lower side. It is let into a transverse 2 emcee recess in the end of the shaft B, and is clamped in place by the point or cap B, retained by the central bolt, 1), in the manner indicated, the parts being confined to a central position by a circular recess in the cap B, fitting over the circular projection formed by the bossg of the cutter I and extended sides n of the shaft B in the manner illustrated, thus forming a firm, rigid connection.
In the operation of my improved tools or dies the plates are first punched by ordinary dies to plain annular rings. (Seedotted lines, Fig.-7.) These rings are then placed on the matrix-block A, and the followerB forced down upon the ring. The point B brings the ring to proper central position. The edges a j cut incisions in the metal at 'k, and the angles t and d bend down the inner edge of the ring included between the incisions 7c, and form the lips or flanges m in a very perfect, rapid, and satisfactory manner.
What I claim as of my inven tion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The matrix block or die A, having a circular matrix, with side enlargements, m, provided with sharp cutting-angles a a and adjustable benders D, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination, substantially as described, the matrix-block or female die A, having cutting-angles a and bending-edges (I, located as shown, and the follower or male die B, having the projection or bar I, provided with cuttinganglesj and bending-angles t for operating in connection with said matrix, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with the matrix-block A,of the radially-adj ustable bending-platesD and laterally-adjustable cutting-plates E, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The follower B, composed of the body or shaft, with transverse end recess and projections n, the cutter or bar I, having central boss, 9, the recessed conoidal end or pointB, and the clampbolt b, constructed and combined substantially as set .forth.
5. The cutters E, adjustably retained and supported in angleplates F of the matrix, in combination with the matrix-block A, as and for the purposes set forth.
