ing paper boxes and similar material or articles; and it consists, first, in a novel mechanism for pasting the tops of the sides and ends of such boxes 5 second, in the combination, with a vertically-reciprocating gate, of vibratory plates carrying yielding metallic pasters adapted to act on the tops of the boxes third, in the combination of a table having paste-receptacles located thereon, awertically-moving gate carrying the plates to w1 ich the\pn&ers are detachably secured, and means for adjust ing and actuating said pasters; and, further, in certain details of construction,- as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved machine arranged to paste the top of the ends or sides of a box. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a verti cal longitudinal section of a modification arranged for pasting the bottom of the ends or sides of a box. Fig. 4 is a plan of the hollow plate or table of the machine with its paste or glue receptacles. Fig. 5 represents a front elevation and sectional details of the pasters used to paste the top of the ends or sides of the box. Fig. 6 represents similar detail views of the modification used for pasting the bottom of the ends'or sides of the box, and Fig. 7 shows similar views, representing a modification of the pasters illustrated in Fig. 5.
Like letters of reference are used to indicate the same parts in the several views.
.The letter a designates a horizontal shaft having hearings in the vertical standards I) b, which constitute the mainportion of the frame of the machine. This shaft is provided at one end with a driving-pulley, a, and also carries order to permit its being readily heated by steam or other suitable means, so as to heat the glue or paste contained in receptacles d d, that are located on said plate. The plate or table 0 is supported by the frames or standards I) b, to which it is firmly secured in any appropri ate manner. The table 0 is perforated at each end for the passage of vertical sliding rods 6 e, that also pass through openings formed in lugs b 1), formed on the frame I) b. The sliding rods 6 e are connected at top and bottom by cross-pieces e" '6, thus forming a verticallyreciprocating gate that is, operated by means of the two-motion cam a, acting within a yoke, 6, attached to the lower cross-bar.
When the machine is arranged for pasting the tops of the ends or sides of a box-blank, the upper cross-bar, e, is provided with suspended end .plates, f f, and a rear plate, f that are hinged thereto on three sides of the machine, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. On the lower ends of these hinged plates fff are secured blocks f f which formbearings for the spindles g of the paster-clamps g g. One or more of these spindles 9 may be provided with spiral springs g, placed I around the same in recesses formed in the blocks f, so as to force the clamps g, with their pasters g down against the materials to be pasted or glued. The pasters g are preferably made from a strip of metal in the form of comb-teeth, and are put in the clamp g, with a separator, g, placed between them, as shown in Fig. 5, be ingsecured byaset-screw, g, or other suitable means. A hook, g, or other convenient fastening device is provided to keep the clamp, with its pasters g and spindle g, from becoming disconnected from the blocks f. N
f f f indicate links having pivotal connections with the plates fff upon the ends and rear of the machine, and said plates are arranged to be operated by the cams a and a through the levers f f f, as shown, so as to swing the suspended plates f f f X and attached pasters after they have been raised by the vertically-reciprocating gate over the end or side of the box-blank to be pasted, which blank is placed on the table 0 between the paste receptacles (Z (Z, the pasters being lowered auto matically by the action of the cam a on the yoke c at the lower end of the gate until they are pressed against the side of the box-blank, thereby pasting be same. The arrangement of the links f and levers f as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, differ slightly, to indicate that the pasters may move longitudinally or transversely in relation to the table 0, as may be desired, the effect in either arrangement being the same. One of the side paste-receptacles and one of the vibratory plates ff are made adjustable to allow for variations in the sizes of box -b1anks. These adjustments may be made by means of slots and setscrews, as shown in Figs. 1 and at, or in any convenient manner. The paste-receptacles dare provided with sliding ends d d", that may be adjusted to vary the length of the receptacles as required, so as not to get paste upon the pasters that are not required for use; or, if desired, the pasters not required maybe removed, said pasting-strips being made in sections to allow such removal. It will be observed that the paster-clamps, with their pasters, are made detachable, so that they may be readily removed for cleaning, as well as to keep them from drying when not in use.
In order to arrange the machine for pasting the bottoms of the ends or sides of the boxes, I remove the vibratory plates ff, with their attached pasters and operating mechanism, and substitute the stationary downwardly-pro jecting plates 71 ii, that are rigidly attached to the upper part of the gate, as shown in Fig. 3, although one of these plates may be made adjustable, for the reason before explainednamely, to correspond with the varying size of boxes. These plates h are provided with pasters 1 that are preferably made of pieces of wire bent to the desired form, as shown in Fig. 6, and having their ends z', which come in cont-act with the bottoms of the ends or sides of the box, flattened so as to retain more paste or cementing material than would be possible if it were made round. Several of these wire pasters i are fastened to a series of vertically-sliding plates, k 7.", arranged at the backs of the rigid plates 71 in suitable guides, 71 the sliding plates It being provided with spring;' 1, which allow them to yield when the pasters are drawn up against the bottom of the material being pasted. It will be observed that by having these pasters composed of a series of sliding plates, with their attachments, the paster will more readily conform itself to the surface of the end or side of the box-blank to be pasted. The box blank or material acted on, rests on the inner edges, d d, which are higher than the other edges of the paste-receptacles (Z (Z, or may rest on any suitable support, so as to project over the receptacle, and is gaged by the front faces of the rigid plates h 71 or by any stationary gage arranged between the rigid plate and the end or side of the box-blank. The sliding plates and pasters Z are so made that they can be re moved, when desired, in the same manner and for the same reason mentioned in connection with the pasters before described.
\Vhen pasting the bottom of the ends or sides of the box, I place a number of the same between the rigid plates h h and draw out the under one after the pastor has pasted the same, and so on until all are pasted. The verticallyreciprocating gate 0 6, when provided with the rigid plates h h, is operated by means of the cam a" and yoke c, in the manner before described, and the rigid plates 71, as well as the paste-receptacles, are adj ustablein the manner before mentioned, so as to correspond with the size of the box-blank. It will be observed that the rigid form of bars h or swinging construction 1" are interchangeable at will, either form being capable of use on the machine desired.
If desired, the pasters employed upon the top portions of the box may be made in the form shown in Fig. 7, which represents a modification of the construction illustrated in Fig. 5, the modified form of pasters being composed of a series of wires, Z Z, projecting through perforations in a block, on, and having springs Z arranged above the heads Z of the wires Z, in order to allow them to yield and conform to the surface acted upon.
The operation of the machine when arranged to paste the tops of the sides and ends of paper-box blanks will be readily understood. It will be seen that the lever f pivoted at one end of the machine is so arranged as to be acted upon and caused to vibrate by the cam a near the end of the driving-shaft, and this lever, being connected by means of a rod or bar, f", with a corresponding lever pivoted at the opposite end of the machine, causes the latter lever to be vibrated likewise, thus actuating the end vibratory plates, ff, and attached parts, while the rear vibratory plate f is actuated in a similar manner by means of a lever, f, acted upon by a cam, c, near the center of the driving-shaft. The connecting-rodf, extending between the end levers, f, is pro vided with a spring, 1:, as shown in Fig. 1, a similar spring, 0, in said figure being attached to the rear lever, as shown in Fig. 2, and one of the end levers f is connected to its vibratory plate f by means of a slotted connectingrod, f, which engages with a suitable guide stud, the vibrations of the paster-plates f being thus controlled and made uniform. It will be seen that when the cam a on the drivingshaft a acts on the yoke c, to raise the gate a c, the pasters carried by the hinged plates f will be raised from the paste-receptacles (Z (Z, and vibrated over the tops of the sides or ends of the box -blanks, against which they are pressed, as the gate is l owered, by the continued action of the cam. These vibratory plates and their attached levers may be removed, as before observed, and the stationary plates h h IIO substituted, for the purpose or pasting the bottom of the box-blanks, the reciprocating movement of the gate to which they are attached being accomplished in the manner before described. The paste-receptacles d d and the plates f or h, as the case may be, will be adjusted properly to correspond with the varying sizes of boxes, this adjustment being effected in the manner described, or in any other convenient way.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a pasting-machine, the combination, with a reciprocating vibratory plate, of a yielding metallic pastel, and means, substantially as described, for detachably securing the same to said plate, substantially as described.
. 2. In a pasting-machine, the combination, with a vibratory plate having suitable bearings, of clamps detachably secured in said bearings and provided with detachable pasters, substantially as described. 7
3. In a pasting-machine, the combination, with a vibratory plate having recessed bearings, of yielding clamps provided with spin dles inserted in said bearings, metallic combshaped pasters made in sections and detachably secured in said clamps, and means, substantially as described, for locking the plates and attached clamps, substantially as deo scribed.
4. In a pasting-machine, the combination of a vertically -reciprocating gate, vibratory plates attached thereto and carrying suitable pasters, a table provided with paste-recepta- 3 5 cles, means for adjusting one of said platesv and receptacles, and suitable operating mechanism, substantially as described.
5. In a pasting-machine, the combination of a table having paste-receptacles located there- 0 on, a vertically-reciprocating gate provided with vibratory plates carrying suitable pasters, and means, substantially as described, for operating saidgate and plates, substantially as described.
6. In a pasting-machine,the combination of a verticallyreciprocating gate, vibratory plates suspended therefrom and provided with suitable pasting mechanism, and means, substantially as described, for adjusting one of 50 said plates, substantially as described.
