(Cl. 24272) This invention relates to a winding device intended more particularly for rolls of paper as used on shorthand type-- writers or calculating machines, for winding the paper roll after its passage around the machine platen.
This winding device actually consists of a paper-roll supporting hub adapted to exert a centering and resilient clamping action to compensate the differences in diameter of the roll cores while exerting a braking action on the core to prevent the paper roll from over-running when the roll is paid out or rotated in the backward direction, notably when the operator wants to re-read the last portion of the recorded text.
According to the invention the winding device is characterized by the fact that it comprises two half-casings in metal so cut and shaped that each of the radial parts has extensions flanged in such a manner that the longitudinal ends exert an elastic pressure transmitting motion to the inside surface of the core, once the latter is slipped on to the winding device, as well as guiding the tube of the winding device, which is detachable, on to its centering journal.
The above and other objects that may become apparent as this description proceeds are obtained by means of a construction and arrangement of parts that will now be described in detail and for this purpose reference will be had to the accompanying drawings in which the invention has been illustrated and in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a winding device mounted on a shorthand typewriting machine.
Figure 2 is a transversal section taken on line II-II of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the winding device before the assembling of its parts.
Figure 4 is a similar elevation showing the parts assembled.
Figures 5, 6 and 7 are respectively perspective views of the various parts.
Figure 8 is an elevation of the hub of the reading-in device.
Figure 9 is an elevation of a holder for rolled paper.
The winding device as represented comprises a hollowaxle 1 supported by the two ends 2 and 3 of the carrying axle and kept in position by the nut 5 and the locknut 6 screwed on to the end of the said carrying axle.
The said hollow axle 1 is integral with a barrel 7 the periphery 8 of which is knurled and inside which is the motion transmitting arrangement with free wheeling of the winding device.
Around the hollow axle 1 are mounted the two halfcasings 9 and 10 each constituted by a sheet of elastic metal so cut and shaped as to form a semi-circular part 11, radial parts 12 and 13 and flanged edges 14 and 15.
One of the said half-casings comprises in addition a shaped feather 16 radially adjusted in a cut-out 17 provided for this purpose in the semi-circular part 11. A corresponding cut-out 18 is provided in the hollow axle 1.
"2,805,829 Patented Sept. 10, 1957 22 provided for this purpose in the barrel 7 and the knurled knob 23 which fits snugly on the free end of the hollowaxle 1; this hollow axle 1 comprises at its end a shoulder 24 on which the nut 5 may contingently come to bear.
To use this winding device, it suflices to slip on the core 25, on the inner wall of which the longitudinal ends of the flanged edges 14 and 15 of the half-casings 9 and 10 come to bear elastically.
To facilitate this operation, the longitudinal ends of the flanged edges of the half-casings are shaped to points 26 and 27.
A small resilient cover 35 may he forced over the core to secure the end portion of the paper roll.
The diameter of the back part 23 of the knurled knob J 23 serves to guide the fitting of the core 25 which is centered at the end of its travel on the shoulder 22. The elastic feather 16 constantly presses against the central part of the carrying axis 4 and prevents any untimely rotation of the roll of paper, thus acting as a brake.
A similar arrangement may be used to constitute a hub of the reading-in device on the support of the roll of un- The radial parts 12 and 13 comprise on each side exused paper as it is unwound. Figures 8 and 9 give an example of how this may be done.
The hub of the reading-in device is constituted by two halt-casings 9 assembled by fastening on a disc 31 and also by two solderings 32 on the axis (Fig. 9).
The said half-casings 9 may be fixed by four solderings 33 by pinching on the axis 3 it will be obvious that the invention is not limited by the details of the practical example shown above. Varions changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as described in the claims.
What I claim is:
l. A winding device for shorthand typewriters or calculating machines comprising a core on which a roll of paper is adapted to be wound, an axle, two out and shaped metal half-casings each having a semi-cylindrical central part encasing the said axle, radial parts on either side of the said central part, flanged extensions on each of the said radial parts, the longitudinal ends of which exert pressure on the inside surface of the core once the latter is slipped on to the winding device.
2. A. Winding device in accordance with claim 1 in which the lateral ends of the flanged extensions of the halfcasings are bevelled.
3. A winding device in accordance with claim 1, in which the axle is constituted by a carrying axle and a hollow axle surrounding the said carrying axle, the hollow axlecomprising a cut-out, and one of the half-casings comprising an elastic feather cut radially and rubbing on the carrying axle through the cut-out in the hollow axle.
4.
