Secured to the bottom surface of the plate (Fig. 1) is a tube 2 l, which extends approximately the full length of the traveling carriage and forms a rearward track, which assists the bar I6 in supporting the traveling carriage for horizontal shifting movement. The tube 2i engages V grooves formed in supporting rollers 22, only one shown here, rotatably mounted in horizontal alinement upon a bar 23, in turn secured to the machine framework. The tube 21 is maintained in accurate engagement with the grooves in the rollers 22 by a series of conical rollers 24 and 25, rotatably supported on their respective studs secured in the bar 23 and secured in horizontal posts 26, protruding from said bar 23. As previously stated, the rollers 24 and 25 coact with the tube 2| to maintain said tube in the grooves in the rollers 22 and thereby prevent vertical displacement of said traveling carriage, and said parts 2|, 22, 24, and 25 also cooperate with the bar [6 and the rollers Hi to support said traveling carriage II for tabulating or horizontal shifting movement.
The right and left castings 12 of the traveling carriage framework rotatably support opposite ends of the central shaft of a platen roll 21, said platen used for presenting the various columns of record material wound therearound to a series of printing type carriers 8 (Fig. 1) and for feeding or line-spacing said record material in rela tion to said type carriers. The type carriers 8, in cooperation with an inking ribbon 9, print data relating to the various transactions upon the record material supported by the platen 21.
A front feed guide 28 is provided for guiding record material around the front of the platen roll 21, and a plurality of spring-actuated pressure rollers 29 are provided for maintaining said record material in yielding contact with the periphery of said platen roll, so that it may be fed or line-spaced by the turning of said platen roll in the usual and well-known manner. The front feed guide 28 and the pressure rolls 29 are shown herein in printing position. However, said guide 23 may be moved to a more accessible or convenient position, and the pressure rollers 29 may be simultaneoushr moved out of engagement with the periphery of the platen 21 to form a front feed throat to receive and guide record material around the front of said platen and into U-shaped opposed guide slots formed in two guide members 30. The guide members 33 are adjustable laterally on the traveling carriage by means of lips formed on its forward ends, which fit between the top surface of the plate 23 and the rear edge of a guide strip 33 secured to said plate 29, and by means of a clamping device 32, carried thereby, which cooperates with the angle bar 31. Therefore, the guide members may be adjusted laterally to accommodate different widths of record material, and said members operate to maintain said record material in proper alinement with the printing type carriers. Any suitable means may be provided for shifting the traveling carriage horizontally from one columnar position to another, to locate the corresponding columnar divisions of the record material in relation to the type carriers 8, so that data may be recorded in said columnar divisions.
The tally roll mechanism, indicated generally by the reference numeral ID in Figs. 1 and 2, comprises left and right side plates 34 and 35, secured to the side walls of corresponding left and right channel members 36 and 31, in turn secured in proper spaced relationship to each other by a front plate 38 and by tie rods 39, which extend through the downwardly-bent side walls of the channel members 36 and are secured between the side members 34 and 35 by screws 49. A tie rod 41 (Figs. 1 and 2), similar to the rods 33, extends between the plates 34 and 35 and is secured in place by screws 40.
The tally roll mechanism is adjustably and removably attached to the traveling carriage I l by means of slots in hooks 42 (Fig. 1) formed in the forward ends of the downwardly-extending side walls of the channel members 36 and 31, said slots freely engaging the outer surface of a tube 43 extending between the end castings l2, and by means of notches formed in downward extensions of the side walls of said channel members 36 and 31, the bottoms of which notches engage suitable ones of a series of equally-spaced slots cut in the top surface of a square rod 44, supported in a manner to be explained later. The notches are maintained in yielding engagement with the slots in the square rod 44 by a spring-actuated clamp 45, having upwardly-bent cars, which pivotally engage a pin 46, supported by the downwardly-extending side walls of the channel members 36 and 31, said clamp being maintained in yieldable engagement with the bottom surface of said rod 44 by a compressible sprin 41, extending between the rear end of said clamp and the bottom surface of the corresponding channel member 36 or 31.
In addition to the two channel members 36 and 31, as many similar central members (not shown) as necessary may be provided to properly support the tally roll unit, depending upon the width of the record material to be used therein, which may vary from a minimum of two inches to approximately the full width of the platen 21. Each channel member 36 and 31 is provided with a stud 52, which overlies the square bar 44 and coacts with its upper surface to assist in accurately mounting the tally roll unit on the traveling carriage.
The downwardly-bent side walls of the members 36 and 37 (Fig. 1) support, at their forward ends, corresponding pins 33, which in turn rotatably support the side arms of a corresponding yoke 49, said side arms having mounted therebetween pressure rollers 58, which are maintained in yielding engagement with the periphery of the platen roll 2'! by suitable compressible springs (not shown).
The plates 34 and 35 carry, respectively, bushings 53 and 54, having central bores which are in axial alinement with each other and which are freely engaged by plungers 55 and 56, having enlarged knurled heads 51 and 58 for use in moving said plungers in and out. Each plunger 55 and 56 has therein a hole arranged to receive a small ball bearing and a compressible spring, as shown in Fig. 3, for yieldingly maintaining said ball bearing in engagement with either of two annular grooves formed in the bores of said bushings 53 and 54, to yieldingly retain said plungers in either their inner or outer positions, as shown, respectively, in Figs. 2 and 3. The plungers 55 and 55 are in axial alinement with each other, and the inner ends of said plungers are arranged to freely engage opposite ends of a through bore 59 in the core portion of a supply roll of record material 63 to rotatably support said supply roll between the plates 34 and 35.

gagement with the periphery of the supply roll 60, as shown in Fig. 1.
After the web SI of the record material has been properly threaded around the platen, as shown in Fig. 1, clockwise rotation of said platen will cause said web 61 to be pulled or unwound from the supply roll 50 and rotate said supply roll clockwise. Clockwise rotation of the supply roll 60, through the rollers 90, will simultaneously drive the receiving roll spindle 65 also clockwise to cause the web SI of the record material to be rewound therearound as it is unwound from said supply roll. By referring to Fig. 1 it will be noted that the center of the receiving roll spindle 65, the center of the rod 9|, and the center of the plungers 55 and 53 are on a common radius in relation to the center of the axle B6, and it is therefore obvious that the operating relationship between the supply roll 60, the friction rollers 90, and the receiving roll B5 is always the same regardless of the diameter of said supply roll and said receiving roll.
If for any reason it is desirable to back up or reverse the feed of the web SI of the record material, an example of which would be the checking of a previous entry, reverse or counter-clockwise rotation of the platen roll 27 causes said web 6| to be pulled or unwound from the receiving roll 65 and simultaneously rewound on the supply roll 60, as the parts of the tally roll mechanism are arranged to operate in either direction with equal facility.
, Any time it is desirable to separate the portion of the record material 6 l rewound on the spindle 65, from the other portion of said record material,
all that is required is to sever the web SI, near said spindle 65, and remove said spindle from the slots in the arms 85. After this, the spindle 65 may be slipped out of the portion of the record material 6i rewound thereon, and the web 6| may be again started around said spindle 65.
Some business systems require that a statement slip be inserted in the front feed throat in front of the web SI of the record material, and under such conditions it is necessary that some form of duplicating medium be interposed between.
said statement slip and said record material, so that a duplicate of the entries made upon said statement slip will simultaneously be made upon said web of the record material. In some cases, this duplication of records is accomplished by means of an inking ribbon inserted between the statement slip and the web of the record ma terial, and in other cases it is accomplished by.
means of a web of carbon paper, which is the exact width of the web SI of the tally roll and overlies said web and is simultaneously unwound and rewound in unison therewith.
The tally roll mechanism may be made in various sizes to accommodate different widths of record material, which, as stated before, may vary from a minimum of about two inches to approximately the full width of the platen roll 21. In certain applications-for example, where a narrow tally roll is required-it has been found that the pressure rollers 55} (Fig. 1) and their supporting yokes 49 may be omitted without in any way interfering with or impairing the proper operation of the tally roll mechanism. In such cases, the upper pressure rollers 64 have proved to be entirely adequate in providing the proper feeding tension between the web 6| of the tally roll and the periphery of the platen 21.
Stop studs (Fig. 1), extending inwardly fromthe plates 34 and 35, cooperate with the corresponding arms 93 to limit'the counter-clockwise movement of said arms and to hold the rollers 96 away from the plungers 55 and 5G and other protruding parts of the tally roll mechanism, when the supply roll 68 is removed from said tally roll mechanism.
While the form of mechanism shown and described herein is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form or embodiment disclosed herein, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various other forms.
What is claimed is:
1. In an accounting machine having a traveling carriage constructed and arranged to support a platen roll for feeding or line-spacing record material wound therearound, the combination of a framework removably mounted on the traveling carriage; a supply roll of record material mounted for rotation in the framework, the web of said record material adapted to be threadedaroundthe periphery of the platen so that rotation of said platen will unwind said web from said supply roll; a receiving roll for rewinding the Web of the record material as it is unwound from the supply roll; an axle mounted in the framework; arms pivoted on the axle and constructed and arranged to removably support the receiving roll for rotary and rocking movement, said rocking movement being in substantial radial alinement with the center of the supply roll; friction rollers; arms pivoted on the axle and constructed and arranged to rotatably support the friction rollers between the supply and receiving rolls and in substantial radial alinement with the center of said supply and receiving rolls; and yieldable means coacting with the arms for supporting the supply roll to maintain the periphery of said supply roll in yielding contact with the periphery of the friction rolls, and to maintain the periphery of said friction rolls in yielding contact with the periphcry of the supply roll, so that rotation of said supply roll, when the web of the record material is unwound therefrom, will simultaneously rotate the receiving roll to rewind said web thereon.
2. An accounting machine having means to print records on record material and having a traveling carriage supporting a platen roll for presenting said record material to the printing means and for feeding or line-spacing said record material in relation to said printing means, the combination of a framework removably mounted on the traveling carriage; a first record material roll rotatably mounted on a fixed axis in the framework; a second record material roll rotatably mounted on an axis supported in the framework so as to rock on a radius which coincides with the axis of the first record material roll,-
both of said record material rolls having wound therearound portions of a continuous web of record material, the part of said web between said record material rolls being wound around the platen roll for presentation to the printing means record material rolls so that rotation of the platen roll in one direction will cause the web of the ord material roll and simultaneously rewound onto the second record material roll, and rotation of said platen roll in the other direction will cause the web of the record material to be unwound from the second record material roll and simultaneously rewound onto the first record material roll.
3. In an accounting machine having means to print records on record material and having a traveling carriage supporting a platen roll for presenting said record material to the printing means and for feeding or line-spacing said record material in relation to said printing means, the combination of a framework removably mounted on the traveling carriage; a record material supply roll removably supported on a fixed axis in the framework; an axle mounted in the framework parallel to the axis of the supply roll; a pair of arms rotatably mounted on the axle, said arms having open slots near their upper ends; a record material receiving roll spindle removably supported in the slots in the arms and rockable by said arms on a radius which passes through the approximate center of the axis of the supply roll, the web of said record material arranged to be unwound from the supply roll, thence around the platen roll, for presentation to the printing means, and for feeding by said platen roll, said web being finally rewound on the spindle to form a. receiving roll; pressure rollers mounted in the removable framework and constructed and arranged to yieldingly press the web of the record material against the platen roll to insure proper and. accurate feeding of said record material; a second pair of arms rotatably supported on the axle; a rod supported by the second pair of arms on the same radius as the spindle; a plurality of yieldable friction rollers mounted for independent rotation on the rod, said friction rollers interposed between the peripheries of the supply and receiving rolls; and springs connected between the first pair of arms and the framework, and acting to yieldingly squeeze the friction rolls between the peripheries of the supply and receiving rolls, whereby rotation of the platen roll unwinds the record material from the supply roll and simultaneously rewinds said record material on the receiving roll spindle.
