Description

* 'UNITED strATns PATENT OFFICE.
S. BOURNE, JR., AND J. G. CUNNINGHAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOOK FOR. TRAVELING BAGS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,057, dated May 1, 1860.
To 'all whom tt may concem:
Be it known that we, SHEARJASHUB BOURNE, Jr., and J. G. CUNNINGHAM, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Frames of Traveling-Bags, &c.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, represents an inside view of our invention. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line w, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, is a modification of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the three figures.
The fraines of traveling bags, valises etc, must necessarily be made light and thin and if they are fastened in 'the middle only and when the bag is well filled, the ends of the frame are forced apart and the contents of the bag are exposed. It has therefore been proposed to fasten the frames at two points a certain distance from each other and this fastening holds the frames together even when the .bag is well filled. But another difliculty arises. If the bag is well filled so that it requires some force to bring the two parts of the frame together, it is impossible to hold the frame together with one hand and to turn the key with the other so that the bolt catches in both eyes at the same time. If the frame be compressed in the neighborhood of one eye, it will spread at the other end and it is not without great trouble that a bag with such a double fastening can be locked.
To remove all those difliculties and to render a double fastening of such frames practicable we have arranged our fastening in such a manner that it takes two consecutive and distinct motions of the key to throw the two bolts into the eyes so that the frame can be compressed in the neighborhood of one eye and by giving to the key one turn or a portion of a turn, the bolt is brought to catch into said eye and the other end of the frame can now be compressed and locked in the same manner.
T o enable those skilled in the art to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe it.
Our fastening is arranged in a casing A, which is secured to the frame in the usual manner, the casing A, being on one part and the plate B, with the eyes a, a, on the other part of the frame. The bolt O, when constructed as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, consists of one long strip of sheet metal, which slides in the ca'sing A, by means of slots Z), and guide pins c, and which is thrown backward and forward by means of a key I), that catches into the notches (Z, in the usual manner. A notched spring catch E, retains the bolt in the desired positions. The bolt catches into the eyes a, a, by means of noses e, e', the nose e, being close to the eye a, so that by turning the key once this nose catches into the eye a. The nose e', on the other hand is so far removed from the eye a', that by the first motion of the key it is drawn up close to said eye without however catching into it and that it takes a second turn of the key to bring the nose e', into the eye af.
Instead of arranging the fastening as here described, it can however with equal advantage be constructed as represented in Fig. 3. Instead of using one bolt, two bolts CX, and O, are employed each with one notch cl* and d'*, for the key to catch in and each furnished with a separate notched spring catch E*, and E'*. By turning the key half way the bolt 0*, is moved and its nose 6*, is brought to catch into the eye a'k, and by completing the revolution of the key the other bolt C'*, is thrown forward and its nose e'*, catches into the eye a'*.
In both cases it takes two distinct consecutive motions of the key to lock both ends of the frame so that when the bag or valise is well filled and one end of the frame spreads when the other is compressed, one end can be locked by compressing it first and by giving to the key one turn or a portion of a turn and the other part can now be locked yithout difiiculty by a second motion of the It will be noticed that our fastening can be got up just as easy and cheap as ordinary fastenings with two catches and while it does not increase the price of the bag or Valise t renders the same much more Valulong nose first enters one of the eyes (a) 10 able and easer to handle. and then the short nose enters the other eye VVhat We claim as new and desire to seas and for the purposes herein shown and Cure by Letters Patent, is, described. 5 The combination With the platerA, casing SHEARJASHUB BOURNE, JR.
