G. WATKINS. DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING ROSES TO DOORS..
No. 280,539. Patented July 3, 1883.
f UNITE-D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WATKINS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING ROSES TO DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming;v part of Letters Patent No. 280,539, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed April 3, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.'
In practice, the thimble H is removed before Be it known that I, GEORGE WATKINS, of I the device is put into operation. Then the rose Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Adjusting Roses to Doors; and I do hereby declare that the fol. lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements'in the construction of a device for centering and setting roses upon doors, such as are provided with mortise latches or locks.
It is a serious work sometimes to accurately center the roses upon each side ofthe door, so that the knob-shaft, when inserted, will be in 4its proper position.
' The object of this invention is to provide a device, simple yet effective, by means of which these roses may be centered and set with perfeet accuracy.
The invention consists in such a device, and in the peculiar construction and combination of parts to produce the desired result, as more fully hereinafter described. Y
Figurel is a vertical longitudinal section of the device in use, showing al section of the door for that purpose. Figs. 2 and 3 are end views of the adjustable conical thimbles.
, In the accompanying drawings, A represents the shell of the lock, inserted in the edge of the door, a section of which is shown; and B is the hub of the latch or bolt.
C D represent the roses, one being situated upon either side of the door.
E is a steel shaft, rectangular in form, upon e one end of which is sleeved the conical thim- D is slipped onto the shaft, and the latter is then inserted through the hub B and the prop-A er mortises in the door. Then the other rose, C, is slipped onto the shaft upon its side of the door, and the thimble H alsoslipped onto the' shaft and run up thereon until the smaller portion of said thimble enters the center recess of the rose. Then, by screwing up the thumbnut G until the smaller part of the thimble F enters the rose upon that side ofthe door, holds the roses in a central position in line with the axis of the shaft, and this latter may be lined up in a true horizontal position at right angles to the faces o f the door by the use of a trysquare, when a little more tightening of the thumb-nut holds said roses in place until they can be secured by screws or otherwise. Then, upon releasing the grip ofthe cam I, the thim- Vble H is removed from the shaft, and the latter may then be removed' from' the door. The opposite end of the shaft may be notched, as shown, and beveled off, thereby forming a nai] drawer.
Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. In a rose centering and settingdevice, a spin dle, E, fitting the hub B, and having two conical thimbles adapted to fit. corresponding recesses in the center of the rose, each of said thimbles beingprovided with a device for holding them adj ustably in place upon said spindle, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
' 2. In a rose centering and setting device, and in combination with a spindle or shaft, two thimbles sleeved thereon, one of which is piovided with a locking device and the other adjusted in place by means of a thumb-screw, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
GEO. VATKINS.
