` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,459, dated April 2, 1889.

To all whom t may concern: v
Be it known that I, SAMUEL IDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medina, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oentering-Jaws for Lathe-Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in centering-jaws for lathe-chucks; and it consists in a jaw having aseries of steps or shoulders, set-screws working in threaded openings in the jaw and communicating with the vertical faces of the shoulders, and adjustable rods Working in openings in said vjaw on a level with the horizontal faces of its steps or shoulders, and set-screws to retain said adjustable rods; and my invention further consists in the peculiar constructionand combination of devices, that will be'more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of a lathe-chuck provided with jaws embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a detailed longitudinal sectional view of one of my improved jaws. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the same, taken on the line .fr of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the clampingscrews, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the adjustable rods.
The chuck A is provided with the usual radial ways, B, in whichl are fitted the adj ust able centering-jaws C, the same being operated by screws in the usual well-known manner. Each of my improved jaws C is constructed with a series of steps or shoulders, D, the inner vertical faces, E, of which are concentric with the center of the chuck. Threaded openings F are made longitudinally through the jaw, and communicate with the said concentric faces of its shoulders or steps, and in the said openin gs are screws G, which are adapted to clamp the work or object, have their outer ends squared, and thereby adapted to be turned by a'wrench, and having' their inner ends pointed in conical form, as at H, and then truncated and provided with conical countersunk openings I, whereby annular biting-edges K are formed between the conical sides H and the conical recesses I, the said edges being adapted to impinge upon and take into the work so securely as to effectually retain the work in position between the jaws and obviate the possibility of its being dislodged therefrom by the vibration caused by the cutting-tool. Also, extending longitudinally through the jaw are openings L, the inner ends of which communicate with the concentric faces of the jaw at a point on a level with the horizontal planes thereof, as shown. In .each of the said openings is arranged a longitudinally-movable adjustable rod, M, said rods having longitudinal recesses N on one side. Transverse threaded openings O are made in the jaw and'communicate with the openings L, and in said openin gs are set-screws P, the inner ends of which enter the recesses N of the rods M, and hence limit the longitudinal movement of said rods and serve to clamp and retain the same at any desired adj ustment.
Ordinarily the'work is engaged only by the concentric faces of the jaws and by the screws G. When the work has to be bored entirely through, the rods M are moved outward and interposed between the work and the bottoms orhorizontal sides of the shoulders, thereby holding the work out of contact therewith, and consequently preventing the point of the boring-tool from defacing the jaws after passing through the work. The-screws G are employed to clamp the work firmly between'the jaws, as before.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- I. A lathe chuck jaw having clampingscrews, one or more, said screws having the annularVbiting-edges K at their inner ends, substantially as described.
2. A lathe-chuck jaw having the clampingscrews G, with their inner ends having the conical sides I'I, and provided with the conical central recesses, I, whereby the cones H are truncated, and whereby annular bitingedges K are formed between the conical sides I-I and the sides of the openings l, substantially as described.
3. A lathe-chuck jaw having the steps or shoulders, the clamping-screwsA G, and the adjustable rods working in openings inv said jaw, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
