LATICO cmcn BUCKLE Filed Feb. "I, 1955 BYv ' INVENTOR 'fl LI'CE AT TORNE; y.
United States Patent LATIGO CINCH BUCKLE Alice M. Ray, Reseda, Calif.
Application February 7, 1956, Serial No. 564,032 3 Claims. (Cl. 5446) This invention relates generally to a novel D-ring means which includes an improved hanger plate adapted to be interposed between the hanger strap and stirrup strap of a saddle.
The hanger plate which forms a part of the subject matter of this invention is of a simple, practical, onepiece construction that may be readily connected to the hanger strap and strap buckle to form a sturdy, long lasting connection.
An important object is to provide a hanger plate that will not unduly limit the movements of the stirrup during normal riding action and also when the rider is handling cattle or doing law enforcement work.
Another object is to furnish a novel strap assembly and hanger plate that will combine to facilitate ready adjustment of the distance between the saddle and the stirrup.
With the foregoing and additional objects in view, this invention resides in the novel constructions, combinations and functional relationships of the parts, as will be set forth in the specification and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in sec tion, the sectioned portion being on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the hanger plate.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the hanger plate.
A portion of the side panel of the saddle overiies the horses body 11. An overhanging portion 12 of the saddle carries an outwardly spaced horizontal strip 14, and, forming a part of the saddle, is a loop 15 having a ring 16 depending therefrom.
The hanger plate 18, separately shown in Figs. 3 and 4, consists of a preferably metal construction including a flat rectangular wall 19 having side wings 20 both extending in the same direction and for a short distance at right angles from said wall. Extending down from said wall 19, when the plate is in its operative position, is a somewhat narrower co-planar strip 21 bent upon itself at 22 to form a hook 23, and having at its midlength a cut-out 24 on one side of the bend of said hook.
Said plate 18, at a midway location, has an elongated, horizontal slot 25 formed as a result of striking out a curved guide 26 which extends laterally of said plate, and is shaped as a short, broad tongue which is directed upwardly and outwardly in relation to the slot 25 which it borders. Countersunk holes 28 are formed in the plate 18 adjacent to its top edge to receive rivets 29 or any other suitable fastening means for attaching one end of a continuous hanger strap 30, said strap being leather or the like.
Said strap 30 extends upwardly to engage the ring 16 and thence downwardly to pass through the slot 25, around the guide 26 and upwardly to form a second run of said strap to engage said ring. The second run of the strap Patented Sept. 3, 1957 I 2 30 extends downwardly to pass around the bend 22 and hook 23, thence up to the strip 14, and thence being passed over andaround said strip and being directed inwardly and downwardly for suitable fastening to the saddle portion 12.
Suspended from the hook 23 is a buckle 32 having a latigo strap 33 hanging therefrom, said buckle having a prong 34 adapted to enter one of the holes 35 of the strap 30 and pass through cut-out 24 so as to engage the rim of buckle 32, thus providing a means for locating the latigo strap (not shown), at a selected distance from the saddle.
It will be seen that the means for connecting the latigo strap with the saddle comprises a saddle carried suspending ring 16 and a hanger plate 13 in a downwardly spaced relation to said ring, said hanger plate having through it in a downwardly spaced relation to its upper edge a substantially horizontal slot 25, and having vertically below said slot a hook portion 22 the width of which is approximately equal to the length of said slot, said hook portion terminating in an upwardly directed part, and having through it an aperture 24 located at substantially the midlength of its bottom portion. Also there is a buckle 32 having a rim portion with an upper part nested within said hook portion, thus suspending the buckle. Said buckle carries below said hook portion a swingable prong 34 which is projectable through said aperture. The latigo strap 33 has an upper end portion secured to the rim portion of said buckle below said swingable prong, thus suspending said strap from said buckle. The unitary strap structure whereby said hanger plate is suspended from the aforesaid saddle carried ring comprises an inner loop commencing with a downwardly directed strap end portion secured to the aforesaid hanger plate, the upper end portion of said loop extending through said ring and its lower end portion terminating in a strap portion which extends through the slot in the aforesaid hanger plate and thence is continued upwardly and forms a part of an outer loop having an upper end portion extending through said ring, and a lower end portion terminating in a strap portion which extends through the aforesaid buckle and is in an underlying relation to the hook portion of the hanger plate. The prong of the buckle extends through the strap where the latter underlies the hook portion of the hanger plate, said prong also extending through the aperture 24 in the hook portion of the plate.
From the foregoing it is evident that this invention provides a novel, simple and practical form of hanger plate and combined strap assembly, which function to provide an adjustable connection between a stirrup and a saddle.
A particular embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing is for illustration only, and it is to be understood that any changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An article of manufacture comprising an elongated plate having a flat body portion, wings consisting of extensions of said body portion at substantially right angles thereto and along parallel opposite edges thereof and in the same direction, means at one end of said plate to connect a strap thereto, the opposite end portion of the plate being reduced in width and arcuately bent toward itself and toward said wings, said bent portion forming a hook-shaped extension of the plate, there being a slot cut across the outer part of said hook-shaped extension, and a broad short tongue struck out from said plate and located between said wings leaving a transverse slot through the part of the plate which is reinforced by said wings said tongue being arcuate-and being pointed in the same direction as the aforesaid hook-shaped extension.
2. In a structure of the kind described, a saddle carried suspending ring, a vertically extending hanger plate in a downwardly spaced'relation to said ring, said hanger plate consisting of sheet metal-having throughit-spaced downwardlyifrom its upper end a substantially horizontal 'slot and having below said slot a hook portion paralleling said slot, said. hook portion terminating in an upwardly directed part and having through it an aperture located at substantially the midlength of its bottom portion, a buckle with an upper part seated within said hook portion, said buckle carrying below said hook portion a swingable-prong' which is projectable through said aperture apart ofsaid buckle below said prong being adapted to have a latigo strap suspended from it; and a strap structure -Whereby said hanger .plate is suspended fromsaidsaddlecarried ring, comprising an inner loop commencing with a downwardly directed strap end portion secured-to the aforesaid hanger plate, the upper end portion of said loopextending through said ring and its lower end portion terminating in a strap portion which extends through the slot in 'said hanger plate and thence is continued upwardly and'forms a part of an outer loop having an upper end portion extendingthrough' said ring and a lower end portion terminating in a strap portion which extends through the aforesaid buckle and is in an underlying relation to the hook portion of the hanger plate, the prong of the buckle extending through the strap where the latter underlies the hook portion of the hanger plate.
3. The subject matterof claim 2, and that end portion of the strap structure which is secured to the hanger plate being riveted to the latter in a-flatwise engagement with the plate above its slot, the upper side of said slot being bordered by a short upcurved tongue resulting from the formation -of the slot, said tongue protecting the extremity of the strap portion which is riveted to the hanger plate.
