This invention relates to an improved retaining device for use in retaining or holding the depending ends of a scarf or necktie by fastening or anchoring such ends to the front edge of the shirt or like garment.

One object of my invention is to provide a retaining device of this character having means for attachment to the shirt edge and additional means for holding the ends of the tie. A further object is to provide means whereby the tie ends are retained in proper position without being immovably clamped to the garment. A still further object is the provision of means whereby the usual button 1 fastening of the garment is utilized to prevent accidental disengagement of the device from the front of the garment.

In its preferred form the device is so clamped to the garment that possibility of accidental detachment and loss is entirely avoided, but the ends of the tie or scarf are effectively retained in place while being free to slide or move in a vertical direction without disengagement from the device.

\Vith the above objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction herein- I after described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changesin the construction and design may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, this form of the device is made by bending a single length of metal wire of suitable 5 resiliency. The back part of the device has its end looped or doubled at 1 and is bent to form an arched part 2 and a loop 3 from which extends an intermediate part 4 extending across the front of the said back art and in close contact therewith. The on of 56 the intermediate part 4 is bent at 5 to form the front part 6 which extends across in front of and preferably spaced from the intermediate part 4 and has a hooked end 7 for engagement with the loop 3 when the device is closed. In use the device is first applied to the outer edge 8 of the shirt front 9 (with the back part behind and the intermediate part in front of said edge) ,and the device is drawn downwardly until the arched part 2 engages the thread attaching one of the buttons 10, the intermediatepart being raised over the button 10 and being allowed to engage the lower edge of said button-as shown at Fig. 2so that the device is effectively locked in position. The ends of the tie or scarf are then placed between the intermediate part and the front part, and the latter is then closed upon the tie by engaging the hooked end 7 with the loop 3, so that the tie is effectively retained in position and the spaced relation of the intermediate and front parts-see Fig. 4is preferably such that the tie is not rigidly clamped in position between these parts but is free to slide or yield when an upward or downward pull is exerted so that the tie may be very conveniently adjusted in the manner desired.

In the form shown at Fig. 5 a front part 11 of wire or like construction carries an ornamental plate or member 12 rigidly secured thereon.

In the form shown at Figs. 6 and 7, a back part 13 is recessed at 14 for the accommodation of the thread securing the garment button, and is riveted or otherwise secured at 15 to an intermediate part 16 having an eye or gap 17 for engagement by a h'ooked end 18 on a front part 19 extending from a bend 20 on the intermediate part. The front part 19 has an ornamental center piece or enlargement 21 and the front face of this part may be suitably decorated or finished.

In the form shown at Fig. 8, a back part 22 is recessed at 23 for the accommodation of the thread securing the garment button and back and intermediate parts has an eye or gap 24 for the reception of a hooked end onone extremity of a front part '25 whose opposite extremity is bent at 26 from the end of an intermediate part 27 secured by rivets or the like 28 to the back part 22. In this form the front part consists of an o}pen frame having an ornamental surface The method of applying and usin the device. is the same in all the forms above described, and it will be understood that the are preferably arranged to normally engage each other and to be sprung apart for the reception of the front edge of the garment. The front and intermediate parts may be arranged to exert any desired pressure upon the tie or to loosely retain the same as above described.

In the preferred construction and method of use, the device is locked in position with the aid of the garment button as above de scribed, but it will be readily understood that the device may if desired be applied to the edge of the garment between buttons Without using the button as a locking means, and in the construction of the device the special means for the locking of the device may be omitted.

In all the forms above described the front part is capable of being swung over or below the'end of the part having the hookreceiving loop or eye, so that the said hook may be conveniently engaged with the said loopor eye after the tie has been placed in position.

Although the drawings and the above specification disclose some of the best modes in which I have contemplated embodying my invention I desire to be in no way limited to the details of such disclosure, for, in the further practical ap lication of my invention,

many changes in orm and construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. I

What I claim is 1. A tie-retaining device of the character described comprising a back part, for engagement behind the front edge of a garment, an intermediate part engaging the front of said edge, said parts being adapted to grip one of the fastening buttons of the garment, and a front part for holding the tie in position.

. 2. A tie-retaining device of the character described comprising back and intermediate parts for gripping the fastening button of the front edge of a garment, and a front part for holding the tie loosely in position.

3. A tie-retaining device of the character described comprisin back and intermediate parts for grippin 5w front edge of a garment and one of t e fastening buttons there of, and a part extending from side to side of the tie in front thereof.

4. A tie-retaining device of the character described comprising back and intermediate parts for engaging a fastening button on the front part of a garment to hold the device immovably in position, and a part extending in front of the tie to retain same yieldingly in place.

5. A tie-retaining device of the character described comprising back and intermediate members for engaging the button fastening of a garment front, gaging the front of position.

6. A tie-retaining device of the charm-tor described comprising means for gripping a fastenin button and the front edge of a garment in ependently of the tie, and means eX- tending from edge to edge of the tie across the front thereof to retain same in place.

7. A tie-retaining device of the character described comprising a back part extending above a button fastening of a garment an intermediate part located beneath said button, and a front part for holding the tie in position.

8. A tie-retaining device of the character described comprising a single length of wire bent to form a back member, an intermediate member, a loop part at the connection between said members, 'a front member having one free end, and a hook part formed on said free end for engaging said loop part.

9. A tie-retaining device of the character described comprising a single metallic strip doubled upon itself to form back, front and intermediate parts, and a hook portion on the front part, the back and intermediate parts being shaped to receive the button fastening of the garment and the said hoop portion.
