A. N. TSCHARNER vPICTURE CAP Filed April 19, 1954 Aug. 27, 1957` Altheg sclIlNc/gler www ilnited States Patent PICTURE CAP Application April 19, 1954, Serial No. 424,069
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-199) This invention relates to wearing apparel, particularly of the type used on the head, and generally of the type worn by juveniles, such as high school students or students or lower grades, and in particular a cap having a vertically disposed band with photograph retaining pockets therein extended around the peripheral edge.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a personalized cap wherein photographs of friends, comic strip pictures, or other characters or indicia may be displayed from the outer surface thereof.
Various attempts have been made to use designs, and particularly representations of school buildings and the like on caps and other headwear, however, owing to the popular trend toward displaying photographs of friends it has been found desirable to provide means for displaying such photographs on bands of caps and the like.
With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a cap having vertically disposed photograph retaining pockets or compartments in a band extended around the peripheral edge and in which means is provided for protecting such photographs.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for retaining photographs and the like in a cap whereby the photographs are displayed continuously.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for displaying pictures and the like on the band of a cap in which the pictures are readily removable and replaceable.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a cap having picture displaying pockets therein in which pictures in the pockets are protected from the elements.
A further object of the invention is to provide a picture displaying cap in which the cap is also useful as headwear.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cap having picture displaying windows therein with transparent protecting elements in the windows in which the cap is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a circular upwardly bowed crown adapted to support the cap upon a head, and a vertically disposed peripheral band having inner and outer walls with windows in the outer wall and with panels of transparent material adapted to be inserted through slots at the ends of the windows with photographs and the like for protecting said photographs.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevational view of a cap having a peripheral band with photographs displayed through windows therein.
Figure 2 is a detail showing a portion of a cap in which a picture holding pocket is positioned with other portions of the cap broken away and showing stitching above and below the window.
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2, with the parts shown on an enlarged scale, and showing the construction of the band of the cap.
2,803,829 Patented Aug.4 27, 1957 Figure 4 is a detail showing a sectional plan taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2, showing one of the slots through which pictures and the like are inserted in and removed from the band, and also showing the parts on an enlarged scale.
While one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the above referred to drawings, it is to be understood that they are merely for the purpose of illustration and that various changes in construction may be resorted to in the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, without in any way departing from the spirit and intention of the device, which is to be limited only in accordance with the appended claim. And while there is stated the primary field of utility of the invention it remains obvious that it may be employed in any other capacity wherein it may be found applicable.
ln the accompanying drawings and in the following specification, the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts and elements throughout, and in which the numeral 10 refers to the invention in its entirety, numeral 12 the upwardly bowed circular portion or crown, numeral 14 the outer wall of a vertically disposed annular band having window openings 16 dening pockets therein, numeral 18 an inner wall of the band, numeral 2) stiiiening backing elements, such as cardboard or heavy paper provided in pockets positioned behind the windows, numeral 22 panels of transparent material positioned in the outer portions of the pockets and providing closures for the windows, and numeral 24 photographs or other pictures or the like adapted to be positioned in said pockets between the panels 22 and backing elements Ztl.
As illustrated in Figure 3, the material ofthe cap, which is a suitable fabric or other cloth, extends downwardly to form the outer wall 14, and at the lower edge the material is folded upon itself, as shown at the point 26, whereby the material is extended upwardly to form the inner wall 1S. The upper edge of the inner wall 18 is folded outwardly at the point 2S to engage the inner surface of the material of the cap, and the upper edge of the inner wall is secured by stitching or the like, as indicated by the numeral 30, to the upper part of the outer wall and material of the cap.
With the window openings 16 formed. as disclosed and described vertically positioned sections 32 are provided between the windows and the sections 32 are provided with slots 34 through which the photographs and backing and transparent panels are inserted in and removed from the pockets of the band. The transparent panels, which overlap the edges of the openings as shown in Figure 3, are formed of plastic, or other material that is impervious to moisture whereby the photographs are protected from the weather.
The triangular-shaped sections or pleats forming the upper section 12 may be stitched together or formed by other suitable means and the upper portion l2 may be formed of the same material as that of the band or of other material, as may be desired. The upper section may also be provided with a button, as indicated by the numeral 36, or other ornamental device.
With the parts assembled as shown and described the photograph of a special girl friend may be placed in the center pocket of the cap of a boy, and the photograph of the next or second best girl friend or rival placed in the pocket to the left. The photograph of another girl friend or a figure from a comic strip may be placed in the pocket or window to the right, and other figures, characters or indicia may be placed in the other pockets. The photographs or the like may readily he changed as desired.
From the foregoing specification. it will; become ap- Harem that.theinverttifmdsclosed will adequately accom P lil? ,the iuntill f9.1" which it .has been Ydesistletl .and .in an econor'riical manner, and that its simplicity, accurac, and ease of operation are such as to provide a relatively inexpensive device, considering what it will accomplish, and ,that 'it will find an important place `in 1the art `to which it appertairls during use.
I t is :thought that .persons slgilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the ,invention after considering the descrip-- tion Vin .connection with `the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy vdescription is regarded as unnecessary.
Changes in shape, size, `and rearrangement of details and parts, .such `as* come within the purview of the inver;` tion claitned rnay be resorted to `in actual practice, if desired,-
Having now described the invention, that which is clairne'cl'to be new and desired to be procured by Letters `In a cap, lthe combination which comprises an upwardly bowed layer of material including a plurality of triangularrshaped lsegments providing a h at crown, said material beingiextended downwardly at the periphery of the crown providing a vertically disposed outer wall of an endless band, said material being extended inwardly and upwardly from the lower Vedge of the outer wall providing an inner wall and the upper kedge of said inner wall being stitched to the upper portion of the outer wall providing an open space between the walls, said outer wall having .Spaesl openings .providing windows therein, panels .of stiffening material positioned between the walls and against the inner wall providing a backing, photographs between the walls and positioned to be displayed through the windows, and transparent panels also positioned between the inner and outer walls and covering said photographs, said outer wall having vertically disposed slots therein through which `the photographs may be removed from and replaced in pockets in the band and positioned in registering relation with v,the windows therein.
