SLElGH-BELL ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,305, dated June 26, 1883.

To in whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GOFF, of East Hampton, in the county of 'Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Attaching Bells to Sleigh: Shafts; and I do hereby declare the following,

when taken in connection with accompanying .stitute part of this specification, and represent, in V Figure 1, a side view of a shaft and bells, showing the clamps applied; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the shaft, showing an edge view of the clamp.

This invention relates to a device for attaching sleigh-bells to shafts-that is to say, that class ofbells which are arranged upon a strap and secured upon the under side of the sleighshafts.

In the usual construction of these bells the strap is made of metal or leather and nailed to the shaft; but this attachment is difficult for parties to make away from the shop, and when so attached they cannot be removed without destroying the strap.

The object of my invention is to construct a I device by which the bells may be readily attached or detached, as occasion may.require, and without necessarily driving nails or other devices into the shaft, which not only make the fastening permanent, but weaken the shaft itself; and the invention consists in the combination of a strap carrying several bells, and constructed for arrangement upon the under side of the sleigh-shaft with a clamp shaped to appear on the surface of the .shaft like a ring or band around the shaft, and so as to take a bearing upon the upper side of the shaft, while on the under side a screw passes radially through the band to'bear upon the strap and clamp it to the shaft, as more fully hereinafter described.

A represents one of the shafts of a sleigh; B, the strap carrying the bells C, and which may be made of metal, leather, or other suitable material. D is the band or body of the strap, conforming, substantially, to the shape of the shaft, but its internal diameter or distance from its inner upper side to its under side a little greater than the Vertical diameter of the shaft plus the strap, and into one (the lower) end of this band I introduce a set-screw, a, substantially radial to the clamp. The strap is placed upon the shaft in its proper position, the clamp over the shaft, then the set-screw a turned upon the strap to bind it hard upon the shaft, as seen in Fig. 2. One of these clamps is applied at each end of the strap,

and may be intermediate, if desirable. These clamps appear on the shaft like an ornamental band, and are rather an ornament to the shaft than otherwise, particularly if they are made of bright metal or japanned. They may be applied or removed,-as occasion may require the applicationor removal of the bells, and when applied hold the bells'in the firmest pos sible condition, and do not in any way weaken the shaft, but, 011 the contrary, to a considera- 7o ble extent strengthen it.

The combination of the strap B, carrying bells C, and fitted for attachment upon the under side of the sleigh-shaft, with the clamps D, shaped up 011 their inside corresponding with and so as to encircle the shafts, and a setscrew, a, in each of said clamps, substantially as described.
