SOLE AND UPPER PROTECTOR FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
SPECIFICATIIEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,264, dated June 26, 1883.
ApplicationfiledApril25,1882. (NomodeL) To all whom it may (madam/.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. WVALKER,
a'citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes-Barr, in ,the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it app ertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in protectors for boots or shoes for miners use and it has for its object to provide metallic covering for the forward or toe portion of the boot or shoe, and protect the portions of the same that are most affected by the cutting ac tion of the coal in the mines.
This invention consists in the construction of the protector in two pieces, which may be used separately or jointly for the protection of the toe of the boot. The shield covers the toe of the upper of the boot and the edges of the sole, and thejunder part covers the portions of the under face of the sole and extends upward over the edges thereof. The two parts are so constructed and conformed to the shape of the shoe and to each other that they may be secured together and form a combined protector for both upper and sole, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure I is a perspective, and Fig. 2' is an under side view, of a shoe provided with my protector. Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views of the toe-protector, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line am, Fig. 3.
A designates the shoe, having upper A, sole A and heel A.
. B is a protector for the rear portion of the shoe.
Gis the toe-protector, having the top portion, a, conformed to and covering the top portion of the toe of the shoe, and the lower portion, 0, covering and conformed to the side of the sole on either side for some distance back from the front of the sole.
0 is a base-piece or flange extended or bent from the lower side of the portion 0 under the sole. This basepiece, as shown, extends only around the front and side edge of the under side of the sole, and is carried back as far as portion 0 leaving a spacein between the side pieces of the base or flange 6-, in which I drive hob-nails to furnish proper grip and obviate the slipping which results when a solid plate is used.
By making the protector in two pieces, as shown, and lapping the edges of the same over the side of the sole, a double plate is provided for the edge of the sole, and one portion may be replaced when worn out.
The toe-protector is preferably made of malleable iron or steel, and it is preferably secured to the sole by screws, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, passed through base-piece 0 Where it is so desired, the top portion, 0, of the toe-protector may be used alone, and may be secured to the sole by screws passed into the side ofthe sole, as indicated in dotted lines, Fi 1.
llly invention, ,as stated, has special reference to improvements in miners boots or shoes, and by the construction described I furnish protectors that will be light to the wearer and will protect the boot at the points where the cutting action of the sharp edges of the coal is the greatest.
My invention is simple, and may be readily applied by any one, not needing a shoe-maker to attach it to the boot. It protects fully the forward part of the shoe, covering the top of the toe, the edges of the sole, and bent for a short distance under the sole, and when secured to the boot by screws may, when so desired, be easily removed when coming out of the mines and replaced on return.
The heel-protector herein shown and referred to will form the subject-matter of a separate application for patent.
It will be seen that the upper portion, a, and the lower portion, 0, may be applied separate ly to the shoe when so desired; and it will be further understood that the manufacture of the protector is greatly facilitated by having the two parts stamped or made by separate machinery. Each form is simple in construction and less complicated, and less expensive machinery is required for their manufacture.
In the use of shoe-protectors it is desirable in some instances to protect only the under surface and edges of the sole against injury While in other instances only the upper and the edges of the sole need protection. My device is adapted for both these separate uses, as well as for a protector for both upper and a sole together.
against the edge of and flush with the under sideof the sole, and the sole-piece 0 having the vertical flange or rim 0 extended upward flush with the upper face of the sole and rest ing against the outer side of the lower extension of the shield c, and a fastening whereby the shield and. sole-piece are secured together and to the shoe substantially as set forth.
In testimony 'Whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
RICHARD H. WVALKER.
