J. s. MUNSON.
PIANO STOOL.
Patented June 26, 1883..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS S. MUNSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO KATHARINE MUNSON, OF SAME PLACE.
PIANO-STOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,068, dated June 26, 1883.
Application filed'Novemb er 1S, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS S. MUNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and use-- reference to the drawings, Figure 1 representing a stool provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a bottom plan, showing the preferred means of support for the arms and adjustable back, and Fig. 3 a detail enlarged.
The stool A is provided with lateral arms, having at the upper edges horizontal ways B, extending parallel to each other on each side of the seat, preferably a little above it, as in Fig. 1. Each arm is shown as formed with a shank, O, entering a socket, D, secured beneath the seat and fitting said shank closely, both being of such form as to prevent the shank turning. There may, if preferred, be a shank extending downwardly from each end of the horizontal part B.
The adjustable back E has secured to it, at each side, a bracket, F, adapted to slide back and forth on the upper surface, B, of each lat eral arm, so as to change the location of the back when desired, bringing it well forward toward the middle of the seat when to be used by a small child, or sliding it rearwardly for an adult, as denoted by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The brackets F are formed each with a vertical lip or guide, 9, at the inner edge, 'serving to retain them in position and provide for free movement on the ways B. Any convenient means of securing the back when thus adjusted may be adopted, such as a cam-lever, a ratchet,or a spring; but I prefer the device illustrated in the drawings. The horizontal arms B are slotted, as at b, and through these slots shouldered thumb-screws H pass to enter threaded sockets in the bottom of the brackets F. The screws, when slackened, traverse the slots, and form stops to control and limit the movement, that it shall not be excessive, and when the screws are tightened the parts are rigidly secured together in the positions de-' sired. \Vith this construction the arms are held with their shanks G' in the sockets 1) without other fastening, and the entire device, except the sockets, can be removed byun screwing and taking out one or both of the thumb-screws H, when the arms B O can be separately drawn from the readily replaced.
I am aware that reclining-chairs and other sea-ts have been furnished with hinged backs adjustable at various angles to the horizon by means of said hinge; also, that removable backs not adjustable have been provided, and that backs mounted on springs, so as to yield topressure against them, have been proposed; but I am not aware of any stool having a back adjustable by a sliding movement, without change in its angle to the horizon, priorto my invention thereof.
I therefore claim as my invention- 1. A piano-stool having rigid lateral arms secured to it, in combination with a back held constantly at a given angle, but adjustable horizontally by a sliding movement on said arms, substantially as set forth.
2. The stool A, lateral arms B O, and sockets D, in'combination with the back E and its rigid brackets F, adjustable together horizontally upon said arms, and provided with looking devices, substantially as set forth.
3. The seat having lateral arms forming horizontal ways, and slotted, as at I), in combination with the sliding adjustable back, the brackets F, having lips g, and the thumbscrews H, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my sig nature in presence of two witnesses.
. JULIUS S. MUNSON.
