Description

July 23, 1957 H. ANDRESEN STAMP PRGDUCING DEVICE Filed Oct. 26, 1953 M m M m W H A s W D M Fm Y B United States Patent STAMP PRODUCING DEVICE Hans Andresen, Spring Valley, N. Y. 7 Application October 26, 1953, Serial No. 388,401
2 Claims. (Cl. 276-1) This invention relates to improvements in stamp producing apparatus utilizing a resilient rubber-like bed upon which type are bonded.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of means for easily and inexpensively producing stamps utilizing type which may be secured upon a resilient bed. Guides are formed in the beds for alignment of the type in parallel rows, the guides being suitably spaced from each other so as to assure correct alignment and spacing between the type.
incorporated in the type are means for interlocking the type with the resilient bed so as to assure against vertical movement and to further assure correct alignment. The type may be bonded to the bed by an adhesive or cement afiixed to the bed before the type are applied.
Incorporated in the concept of the present invention are various forms of apparatus for discharging the type upon the resilient bed which may be utilized in lieu of the interlock between the type and the bed. These means are adapted to discharge individual type onto the bed in aligned rows.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of the various modifications of stamp producing devices that are strong and durable, simple in construction and manufacture, capable of being readily utilized by anyone even without knowledge of type setting, and which will enable the production of stamps at very low cost.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the stamp producing devices, preferred embodiments of which have been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of type utilizing the present invention having tongues depending there- I from;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of another form of type utilizing grooves in the type;
Figure 3 is a sectional detail View illustrating the manner in which the type, as illustrated in Figure 1, are secured on a bed;
Figure 4 is another sectional detail view illustrating the manner in which the type illustrated in Figure 2 are secured on a bed;
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating a novel stamp discharging device for setting type in aligned rows on a bed;
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 66 in Figure 5; and
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a modified form of type discharging apparatus.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, and with particular attention to Figures 1 and 2, it will be noted that herein there are shown two embodiments of type which are indicated by reference numerals 10 and 11. The type of 10 v Patented July 23, 1957 may be made from any suitable material such as rubber, metal, or the like, and has integrally formed projecting tongues as at 12 together with a letter or numeral 14 integrally formed with the body of the type. The type 11 is formed from the same materials as is type 10 but is provided with grooves 16 formed in the body thereof. A letter or numeral 18 is integrally formed with the body of the type 11.
As can be readily seen in Figure 3, the tongues 12 of the type 10 are adapted to seat within grooves 20 formed in a resilient cushion 22 of a bed 24. The tongues 12 interlock with the cushion 22 within the grooves 20 so as to assure correct alignment of the type 10 in suitable rows.
Referring now to Figure 4, it will be noted that herein the resilient cushion 26 is provided with upwardly extending tongues 28 of any convenient shape, the cushion being mounted on a supporting member 30 and forming the bed supporting the type 11. The tongues 28 extend into the recesses 16 of the type 11 and provide means for assuring that the rows of type 11 will be correctly aligned. When the type 11 is secured on the cushion 26, it is adhesively bonded by means of a suitable cement or the like applied on the cushion 26.
Referring now to Figure 5, it will be noted that herein the supporting structure 32 has a cushion 34 attached thereto which is provided with suitable grooves 36 therein forming guide means for aligning the type. A suitable cement may be applied on the surface of the cushion 34 for bonding the type 38 thereto. An interlocking means can, of course, be provided for the type 38. In order to discharge the type onto the cushion 34, there is provided a novel type discharging mechanism 40 having a pair of flanges 42 integrally formed with the casing 46 which is of tubular construction having an open bottom and a top wall 48. Slidably mounted in the top wall 48 is a rod 50 having a handle 52 attached thereto and having a lower plate 54 adapted to engage the type 38 attached thereto. A necked portion is provided in the casing 46 so that each time the handle 52 is actuated a single type 38 will be discharged past the neck portion 60 onto the bed 34 so that such type may become bonded to the cushion 34. It is to be realized that the cushion 34 will yield enough to pressure so that only the single type can be discharged at one time from the casing 46, the plate 54 serving to provide sufficient pressure upon that type due to the actuation of the handle 52 so as to assure that the type will become firmly bonded with the cushion 34.
In the embodiment of the invention as is shown in Figure 7, a separate form of type discharging apparatus 64 is utilized which is in the form of an elongated channel shaped member 66 having retaining flanges 68 for slidably receiving the type 38. Downwardly extending spaced flanges 70 are appended to the member 66 and are adapted to seat within the grooves 36 in the cushion 34. Thence, the member 66 may be slid along the grooves 36 with each successive type 38 being directly aligned on the cushion 34. Obviously, suitable sets of members 66 may be utilized as necessary.
Since from the foregoing the construction and advantages of this stamp producing apparatus are readily apparent, further description is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art, after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise embodiment shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be readily resorted to.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A stamp producing apparatus comprising in combination with a bed having a resilient cushion provided with guide grooves therein and having a face covered with adhesive, a type holding and discharging member having flanges attached thereto slid'ably' positioned in said grooves for' delivering said type in rows parallel to said guidenation with a bed having" a resiii'ent cushion provided with" guide grooves therein and having a face coveredfwi' t-h adhesive, a type holdingand discharging member having;
flanges attached thereto slidably positioned in'said grooves for delivering said type in rows parallel to said guide grooves, said member including a hollow tubular casing, said type being vertically superimposedaboveeach other in said casing, said casinghav'ing a: necked portion of reduced cross-sectional area immediately abovesaid flanges, and a discharge device: overlying said type and having ahandle extending outwardly of said casing, said discharge device. being; adapted to urge said type past said necked portion, said type engaging said adhesive and being bonded by said adhesive tosaid resilient cushion.
