STRIPING DEVICEFOR PAINTERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 279,767, dated June 19, 1883.

' Be it known that I,WILLIAM A. KIBBE, a citi zen of the United States of America, residing at Leavenworth, inthe county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Striping Devices for Painters; andI do lfereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being, had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in striping and marking implements, and is particularly useful in work where it is desirable not to remove the brush, as in most striping work; and it is also a very convenient implement for ordinary marking purposes, being clean and neat, and doing away with the trouble of carrying a pot of paint or marking-ink.

It consists more particularly in providing a brush-holding tube with a reservoir for carrying the paint or marking-fluid, and in certain devices for causing a continuous flow of paint when in use and for checking said fiow as desired, all which I will now proceed to describe.

Referring to said drawings, A is the reservoir forholding the paint or marking-fluid. 'B is a tube attached to said reservoir, and may be formed or cast of the same piece of metal, said tube B extending below the bottom of the reservoir, and being contracted at its lower opening b. a is an opening covered by the screwcap a, by means of which the reservoir is filled with paint. 0 is a vent-hole. D is a slot, opening from the reservoir into the tube B, and through whichthe paint flows into said tube B. E is a brush-holding tube, which fits in the tube B. e is the brush, which projects through the lower opening, b, the lower end of said tube E fitting in and completely closing the lower opening, I), when said tube is in its normal position. 6' is a leather washer which fits around the top of the tube E and prevents any paint from ruiming out of the upper opening, 1). E is rod attached to the tube E, and projects through the opening I). F is a spiral spring which surrounds the rod E, and, bearing upon the tube E, holds the same down so that the lower opening, I), is completely closed by said tube. G is a lever, fulcrumed at f. g is a stopper attached to said lever, which closes the venthole 0, one end of the lever G being secured to the rod E. g is a catch on the outside of the reservoir.

My invention is used as follows: The reservoir being filled with paint or markingfluid, the lower arm of the lever is pressed forward until it engages with the catch 9, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, raising the tube E from contact with the lower opening of the tube B, and at the same time opening the vent-hole O, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and thus allowing the paint or marking-fluid to flow upon the brush c. When it is desired to check the flow of paint, the lower arm of the lever is released from the catch g, and the spring F forces the tube E back to its normal position, closing the opening I) and at once stopping the fiow of paint.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1 1. In a striping or marking implement, the reservoir A and tube B, in combination with the tube E, rod E, spring F, and lever G, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a striping implement, the reservoir A, having the slot D, in combination with the tube B and tube E, brush 6, washer 6, spring F, and lever G, substantially as shown and de scribed.

3. The combination of the reservoir A, having the slot D, opening a, and vent-hole G, with the tube B, tube E, brush a, washer 6, rod E, spring F, and lever G, substantially as shown and described.
