PAPER Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,756, dated lJune 19, 1883,.
' Application filed Februa1y13,1883. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAvID HEsToN, a citizen of the 'United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciiication and accompanying drawings, in which- Figures l and 24 are views of opposite faces of a form or shape embodying my invention, from which'a paper box may be made. Fig. 3 is a top view of the box made up from said form or shape. Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a piece of paper formed with iiaps and-strips with adhesive ends, whereby when a box is required the flaps are thrown up and the' adhesive ends ofV the strips Inoistened and turned over and against the ends of adjacent iiaps, thus connecting the several sides of the box and forming the body thereof in a simple, inexpensive, and rapid manner. n
Referring to the drawings, A represents a piece of suitable paper, having 011 each side a iiap, B, which may be folded on the scored lines a., said piece A being adapted to form the bottom ofthe box, and the flap B the sides thereof. To the backs of two opposite flaps is attached by gumming, pasting, Ste., strips C C, the ends of which extend beyond the ends of the flaps and occupy the spaces c left at the corners, the inner faces of said extended ends being coated with gum or other adhesive material, as at b, which is left uncovered or cxposed, said material being properly dried.
The parts as thus described form what may be termed a box shape, in dat condition, ready for the market, adapted to be bundled, boxed, or otherwise packed in layers. When a box is required, one of the shapes is taken,
its iiaps. are turned up, and the coated ends b of the strips C moistened and turned over and pressed against the ends of the adjacent or contiguous iiaps, whereby the iiaps are connected andhel'd upright, thus producing the body of the box, readyto be filled, it being evident that a lid may be constructed or produced similarly to said body, or a tubular cover provided, which prior to use may be folded flat, as well known.
It will be seen that a cheap, simple, quickly set up, and serviceable box is formed, and that but little room is required for the flat shape, both in transportation and for storage, the
-economy and convenience ofthe same being apparent.
1f desired, the flaps of each side may have the adhesive strips attached to them, in which case the ends of two strips may be made to adhere to the inner faces of the adjacent iiaps.
The scored lines ay are on the inner face of' the junction of the piece A and iiaps B, whereby the outside corners of the box, coinciding with said scored lines, are left unbroken and smooth, thus obviating necessity of covering said corners.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A piece of paper having iiaps on its sides, and strips attached to said iiaps having their ends coated with adhesive material, forming ashape from which a box Inay be readily made, as stated.
2. The piece A and flaps B, with the scored lines c ou the inner face of the junction of said iiaps and piece, and the strips C, having adhesive Inaterial, combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
