June 25, 1957 A. J. LORD RACING PIECE FOR A RACING cm:
Filed April 9, 1956' INVENTOR. ALBERT J. LORD ATTO RNEY United States Patent U RACING PIECE FOR A RACING GAME Albert J. Lord, San Francisco, Calif.
Application April 9, 1956, Serial No. 576,883
2 Claims. (Cl. 46-127) This invention relates to a racing piece for a racing game.
The invention particularly relates to a racing piece mounted for rocking movement and having a rider with movable parts which move with the movement of the racing piece over the race course.
An object of the invention is to provide a racing piece for a racing game having a rider mounted thereon, which racing piece and rider simulates the movement of a horse and jockey in the usual horse race.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a racing piece of said character in which the racing piece is mounted on a base for rocking movement simulating the galloping movement of a horse in a race and with a rider mounted on the racing piece with the body and arms pivoted for independent rocking movement with the rocking movement of the racing piece.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a resilient pennant support affixed to the rider and extending upwardly therefrom for oscillatory movement with the forward movement of the racing piece and which increases the rocking movement of the racing piece and rider.
A further object of the invention is to provide a miniature animal atfixed to the pennant adjacent the top thereof having pivotally connected legs adapted to move with the oscillation of the pennant.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a racing piece constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof showing the rocking movement of the racing piece and rider in broken lines.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4 of Fig. 2 showing the spring means for limiting the rocking movement of the upper portion of the rider.
Referring to the drawings the racing piece may consist of a representation of any desired animal adapted to compete in a racing game and as illustrated, the racing piece is in the form of a horse indicated by the reference character which is supported on a base 11 for rocking movement on a pivot pin 12 extending through openings in the upper ends of a U-shaped member 13 affixed at its lower end to the base and with the horse 11 arranged between the opposite sides thereof.
The horse is mounted with its feet 14 disposed in spaced relation above the base 11 to permit of limited rocking movement on the pivot pin 12. Seated on the horse 10 is a jockey 16 arranged with the legs 17 disposed in straddling relation and afiixed thereto whereby the legs rock with the rocking movement of the horse. The body of the jockey 16 is pivoted to the legs 17 on Patented June 25,1957
a pivot pin 18 and the arms 19 are pivoted to the body thereof on pivot pins 20. Means is provided for limiting the rocking movement of the body of the jockey on the pivot pin 18. The said means consists of a fiat spring 22 secured at its lower end to the top of the horse *and with its upper end embedded in an opening 23 in the lower portion of the body of the jockey forwardly of the pivot pin 18. The spring 22 is sufiiciently resilient to permit of forward and rearward rocking of the body of the jockey relative to the horse 10 and functions to return the body of the jockey to the normal position shown in full line in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings following each rocking movement of the horse. The arms 19 will rock on the pivot pin 20 with the forward and rearward rocking movement of the body of the jockey.
Affixed to the jockey substantially centrally of the horse is an upwardly extending flexible wire 25 having a pennant 26 at the top thereof Which may bear a number designating the number of the horse in the race. A miniature figure 27 of a race horse is also carried by the wire 25 which is affixed thereto below the pennant 26. The legs 28 of the miniature horse 27 are pivoted to the body of the horse on pivot pins 29 whereby the legs 28 have swinging movement with reference to the body of the horse with the forward and rearward movement of the wire 25. The base 11 is provided with a hooked member 31 affixed to the forward end thereof which is adapted to be engaged by any desired means for moving the base 11 over the race course. The means for engagement with the hooked member 31 may be a cane having a rounded end and the sliding movement imparted to the base thereby will be more or less of a jerky nature so as to effect rocking of the horse 10 and rider 16 and swaying of the wire 25 as hereinbefore explained.
It will be understood that the upwardly extending Wire 25 being weighted at the top by the miniature figure 27 will oscillate back and forth with the slightest forward movement imparted to the racing piece. The oscillation of the Wire 25 will greatly increase the rocking movement of the horse 10 and rider 16 and will elfect continued rocking of the horse and rider after the forward movement of the playing piece is discontinued. The
While the preferred form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it is to be understood that the same is not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications therein which fall Within the purview of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a racing piece for a racing game, a figure of a racing animal, a rider mounted on said figure, a base for said figure adapted for movement over a race course, means mounting said figure on said base for rocking movement, said rider having arms and legs arranged with the legs alfixed to said figure and pivoted to the body of the rider for rocking movement of said rider with reference to said figure, and a resilient support aifixed to said rider and extending upwardly therefrom substantially in alignment With the means mounting the figure on the base for rocking movement, and said resilient support having a Weighted figure at the top thereof for oscillatory movement with the forward movement of the racing piece and said oscillatory movement of said weighted figure functioning to increase the rocking movement of the rider.
2. In a racing piece for a racing game, a figure of a racing animal, a rider mounted on said figure, a base for said figure adapted for movement over a race course, means mounting said figure on said base for rocking movement, said rider having arms and legs arranged with the legs affixed to said figure and pivoted to the body of 'thejrider for rocking movement of said 'rider with reference to said figure, a resilient support eiifixed to said rider and eXtending upwardly therefrom, a figure of a racing animal having pivoted legs affixed to the upper end of said support for oscillatory movement with the 9' forward movement of the racing niece, and said oscillatory movement of said last mentioned figure functioning to increase the rocking movement of the rider.
