Description
May 21, 1957 s. GINGOLD 2,792,697
CRUMBER Filed Feb. le, 1955 Sal/w G//vGaLD BY V l I f M ATTORNEYS United States Patent O CRUMBER Sain Gingold, New York, N. Y., assignor to The Sheieltl Silver Company, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application February 16, 1955, Serial No. 488,579
2 Claims. (Cl. 65-62) The present invention relates to a crumber and relates, more particularly, to a crumber with a self-contained brush.
An object of the invention is to provide a crumber having a compartment to receive crumbs and a brush for sweeping the crumbs into the crumber removably carried inside of the crumb-receiving compartment.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent and best understood from the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a crumber embodying the invention with the lid open;
Fig. 2 is a side view in vertical section of the crumber illustrated in Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a section view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, there is a crumb receptacle 10. The crumb receptacle has a bottom 11 from which side walls 12 and 13 and a rear wall 14 extend upwardly. The front or forward end of the crumb receptacle 10 is open so that when the bottom is placed on a at surface, such as a table, crumbs may be readily brushed from the surface of the table into the receptacle.
A cover 15 is hinged along the top of the rear wall of the receptacle and extends forward partially over the receptacle. At the forward edge of the cover there is a downwardly extending end piece 16 which abuts against 'the bottom of the receptacle when the cover is closed, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus, when the cover is closed, the cover and the receptacle form a closed compartment at the rear of the receptacle for retaining crumbs or the like which have been collected in the receptacle.
A handle 17 extends rearwardly from a fitting mounted on the rear wall of the receptacle and provides a convenient means for carrying the crumber. A projection 18 is `carried on the top of the cover and is positioned so that the cover can be opened by the thumb of a persons hand on the handle.
A brush 19 is removably carried in a channeled member 20 which is mounted on the inside of the cover. The channeled member extends across the cover and the back of the brush is slidably litted into the channeled mem ber. The back of the brush may be provided with grooves into which inturned flanges on the channeled member fit. The brush has a handle 21 extending from one end of the back and the handle of the brush may extend beyond ICC one side of the cover. In order to accommodate the handle of the brush when the cover is closed, one of the side walls of the receptacle has a slotted opening 22 at its top edge opposite one end of the channeled member.
With this arrangement, the brush is concealed except for the handle when the cover is closed. However, the brush may be removed from the channeled member when the cover i-s opened and may be used to sweep the crumbs or the like into the receptacle.
It will be understood that various changes and moditications may be made in the illustrated embodiment of the invention by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A crumber comprising a receptacle having a at bottom and upstanding walls extending above two sides and one end thereof, said walls having top edges deiining three sides of an opening at the top of the receptacle, a cover hinged along 'the top edge of the end wall and extending over the opening at the top of the receptacle, a downwardly extending lip formed on the cover, said lip extending between the side walls of the receptacle and having .a lower end abutting the bottom of the receptacle when the cover is in closed position, and a channeled member carried on the inside of the cover for removably supporting a crumbing instrument within the receptacle, said channeled member having an open end located opposite one of the side walls of the receptacle, said side wall having a slotted opening therein aligned with the open end of the channeled member.
2. A crumber of the character described having a receptacle which includes a flat bottom and opstanding walls extending along two sides and one end thereof and a cover hinged to said end wall, said cover having a lip extending downwardly therefrom and forming the other end wall of the receptacle, the improvementwhich comprises a channeled member carried by the cover on the inside lthereof for removably supporting a crumbing instrument inside of the receptacle, said channeled member having an open end located opposite one of the lside walls of the receptacle, said side wall having a slotted opening therein aligned with the open end of the channeled member.
