  • Such containers are generally made from paper board and like materials and it is the general purpose of this invention to improve the construction of such containers to permit the use of lighter weight material without sacrificing strength, rigidity, and other characteristics of the containers which serve to prevent leaking of iiuids therefrom.

Claims. (Cl. 229-47) This invention relates to an improvement in consumer type containers such as those described in U. S. Patents 2,398,404; 2,577,305; 2,434,756; 2,450,110. Such containers are generally made from paper board and like materials and it is the general purpose of this invention to improve the construction of such containers to permit the use of lighter weight material without sacrificing strength, rigidity, and other characteristics of the containers which serve to prevent leaking of iiuids therefrom. Such containers usually are used for milk but' may equally well be used to contain oil and other uids and to contain light powders and other materials such as cleansing powder, flour and cereal.
Although the structures of the above patents have provided containers which have proved very worthwhile in providing strong rigid container structures at less eX- pense than those previously known, it has been found possible as will be more 'fully described hereinbelow, to provide these containers with an improvement which makes still further reductions in cost possible without sacrificing strength or rigidity.
This end is accomplished by providing containers of the type described with vertical corners in a speciic manner according to the 'invention as will be described hereinafter.
it is therefore a principal object of this invention to provide consumer type containers, generally tubular in form and having nat sides and angular corners, of great strength and rigidity vertically although made fully or almost fully of extremely light weight ber board or paper board.
Further objects will become apparent from the drawings and the following detailed description in which it is my intention to describe the invention and to illustrate its applicability without thereby intending to limit its scope and in which like reference numerals refer to like 1parts, and in which: Figure l is a perspective partially cut away View of a container adapted to be a quart milk container;

Referring now to Figures 1, 2, and 3, wherein is shown a container incorporating therein one embodiment of the invention together with blanks from which several parts of the container may be made, the numeral 5 generally indicates the body of this container. The -body is shown comprised of four sidewalls 3 connected together by a glue flap 7 to produce a body of substantially square prismatic tubular shape.
While the container has been shown to be provided with four sidewalls, it will lbe apparent that the invention is applicable to containers having three sides or more than four sides.
The body may be made from a onepiece blank of flexible sheet material such as paper or iiber board or even flexible sheet metal and the blank from which the body is made may be formed as shown in Figure 3 wherein the blank is provided with equally spaced vertical scorelines 9 to define the sidewall forming panels 8 of the blank from one another, the glue flap 7 on one of the end panels of the blank being hinged thereto by one of the vertical scorelines 9', which does not define the ledge of one of the sidewalls but which may be located substantially near the middle of one of the sidewall panels formed from the two panels and 8". 6 of the container may be formed from the blank shown in Figure 2 wherein top 6 is provided at one corner thereof with a closure portion 10 which may be folded up, out of the plane of top 6 at the scoreline 1l.. Closure portion l0 is provided with two tlaps 12 extending therefrom, foldable along scorelines 13, to extend down alongside sidewalls 8 and be adhered thereto. Thus the closure may be secured tightly closed in two ways: by adhering closure member 10 to the ledge provided by the The top J upper surface of panel 18', integral with said sidewalls 8 and extending inwardly therefrom at the top marginal edge thereof, and by adhering flaps 12 to sidewalls 8. The body 5 is provided with closure supporting ledges which may extend inwardly from the upper and lower marginal edges of side walls 8, substantially perpendicular thereto and ush therewith, which may be made as an integral part thereof by bending portions 14 inwardly on scorelines 15 and by then bending portions 16 outwardly on scorelines 17 and adhering portions 14 and 16 together on their adjacent surfaces. Top 6 may then be securely attached by adhering its marginal edges to the upper surface of the ledges thus formed and also by folding portions 13 upwardly and inwardly on seorelincs 19 so las to overlie the outer marginal edges of top 6 and be adherent thereto. Portions 18', instead of being folded so as to overlie the top 6, instead may be folded so as to underlie closure portion 1t) or alternatively may be omitted entirely. may be omitted entirely.
The corner construction of the invention, indicated generally as 20, may be made by providing, in between each of sidewall panels S in the blanks shown in Figure 3, a group of four longitudinal strips of substantially equal width, defined by scorelines. Each of the outermost of said strips, that is, strips 2i, defined by scorelines 9 and scorelines 22, may be folded inwardly so as to lie against adjacent sidewall panels 8 and may be adhered thereto. Each of the innermost of said strips, that is, strips 23, defined by scorelines 22 and corner scoreline 24, may then be folded so as to lie against and be in conjunction with said strips 21 and may be adhered thereto. The corners of tubular body 5 may then be provided by folding on scorelines 24. Extremely strong and rigid corners of body 5 are thus provided and in practice it has been found that the thickness of sidewall panels 8 may be substantially reduced, with a resultant great saving in the cost of the material for the body.
Referring now to Figures 4, 5, and 6, there is shown another application of the invention wherein the numeral 5 indicates the tubular flat-sided body of a container which may be provided with top 26 shown thereabove and bottom 27 shown there-below. Body 5 comprises sidewalls 8 and may be formed from the blank shown in Figure `5 by folding said blank in the manner shown in Figure 6. Flap V7 defined by scoreline 9 may overlap and be adhered to a portion of panel 8" in order to secure panel 8 to panel 8 and thus form one of the sidewalls of the body 5. An inwardly extending closure supporting ledge, integral with sidewall panels 8 and extending inwardly flush with the upper marginal edge thereof may be provided by folding portions 30 inwardly on scoreline 31, substantially at right angles to the sidewall panels 8, and by then folding portions 32, on scoreline 33, downwardly, upwardly, and inwardly so as to underlie said portions 30 while simultaneously folding portions 34 downwardly so as to lie against sidewalls 8 adjacent the upper marginal edges thereof. Portions 30 and 32 may be adhered together and portions 34 may be adhered to sidewalls 8 to form a strong and rigid supporting ledge for top 26 which may be adhered to the upper outer portion of sidewall panels S. To provide more secure attachment of top 26 to body 5, flaps 2d may be folded down and adhered to sidewalls S. The small triangular panels 40, being part of the ledge formed by portions 30 and 32, may be folded downwardly as shown at 41 and if desired may be adhered together to provide additional reinforcement at the corners.
vA portion of top 26, such as the triangular portion indicated as 36 may be adapted to be folded upward along a scoreline such as 36' to provide an opening for removing the contents of the container. Bottom 27 may be attached to body 5 by providing flaps such as 37 at the bottom of sidewall panels 8 which may be folded inwardly on scoreline 39. The underside of said flaps 37 may then be adhered to bottom 27 and flaps 2? extending upwardly from the bottom 27 may be adhered to the outer lower portions of sidewall panels 8.
The corner construction of the invention, indicated generally as 2t), may be provided by folding and adhering strips in the manner shown and described in connection with Figures 1 to 3.
Figures 7 to l0 show the forms of corner of my invention. In Figure 7 there is shown a corner defined by sidewalls 8, formed by bending the material of sidewalls 8, provided with a strip 46 of material adjacent said corner on the inner side thereof, of uniform width, adhered to both sidewalls. In Figure 8 there is shown a corner formed by sidewalls 8 provided with a like strip 47 which, however, lies against and is adhered to only one of sidewalls 8. It may be seen that the strip may extend substantially from the bottom of said corner to the top of said corner.
In Figure 9 there is shown a portion of a corner7 indicated generally as 20, lwhich may be formed in the manner described in connection with Figures l to 6, the parts thereof being indicated by corresponding numerals. A corner is thus formed having adjacent thereto strips formed by pleat-like folds in the material of which said sidewalls are made, joining said sidewalls as an integral part thereof at said corner.
Thus, instead of separate strips, strips may be provided integrally with the sidewalls of the container.
As shown in Figure l0, a corner defined by sidewalls 3 of a container is provided with a vertical column member consisting of two thicknesses of the material of which sidewalls 8 are made, integral therewith, extending as a strip of substantially uniform width adjacent said corner. This construction may be provided by folding a strip portion Sil of the material of sidewall S, adjacent said corner and adjoining sidewall S inwardly and back so as to lie against the portion of sidewall 8 adjacent to said corner. A second strip portion 5i of the material of sidewalls 8, adjoining said first strip 50, and adjoining the other of said sidewalls 8, designated as 8', may be folded inwardly so as to overlie and be in conjunction with strip 5d, whereupon strip 51 may be adhered to strip 58 and the material of sidewalls 8 may be bent on a scoreline between strip portion Si and sidewall 8 to complete the formation of said corner. Thus a vertical corner is formed comprising at least two thicknesses of the material of the sidewall dening said corner, lying against only one of Asaid sidewalls and being adjacent to said corner. The strip may of course extend from the bottom of said corner to the top thereof.
The invention broadly relates to a means for providing a container which will resist vertical forces applied thereto such as are encountered in the operation of machines adapted to cause tops and bottoms to be firmly bonded to the tubular body of the container shown herein and by machines adapted to rrnly close the closure of the container after it is filled.
My invention provides strength to resist such forces and to prevent the resulting failure of the container by reason of vertical strips, preferably in the form of angles, that is, angular in cross section, and thus being well adapted to resist column action. Said strips, adapted to provide a container extremely resistant to forces imposed thereupon in a vvertical direction may most suitably be arranged at the corners of the container at which location they may be made either integral with the sidewalls of the container, being made out of the same material, or may be provided as separate strips which may most suitably be adhered to those portions of the sidewalls adjacent the corner. It has been found that in containers provided with such strips and therefore having great regine? resistance to closure machines, the material of other parts of the container may be made of much lighter stock, thus making it possible to realize great savings in cost in the construction of the container. Conversely, if desired, containers may be provided which have substantially the same weight as those in which my invention is not incorporated but which have much greater strength with respect to resisting vertical crushing forces applied thereto.
Containers provided with the corners of my invention are also particularly well adapted to resist vertical forces imposed upon the containers as a result of stacking a plurality of containers one upon another which commonly occurs in shipment. When the containers are utilized for liquid substances such as milk, vertical crushing forces of considerable magnitude are imposed in those containers which are on the bottom layer. It has been found that containers constructed according to my invention resist such forces to a degree which is unmatched by any other container which may be provided of comparable size and weight.
As shown in Figures l1 and 12, a container similar to that shown in Figure 4 may be provided with corners like that shown in Figure 10. A supporting ledge for the top 26 is provided, extending inwardly from the upper marginal edge of sidewall panels 8, and integral therewith in like manner to that shown and described in connection with Figures 4, 5, land 6. Top 26 may be provided with a large closure portion 36", foldable upwards along scoreline 36". Bottom 43 may be adhered to the underside of inwardly turned flaps 37. The corner construction of the invention indicated generally as 50 may be provided by inward folding of the strip-like panels 51, interposed between sidewall panels 8 and defined by scorelines 9, defining the edges of said sidewall panels S, and by scoreline 52 between said panels 51.
A container which may be formed from a single blank is illustrated in Figures 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. The body of the container indicated generally as 5 comprises sidewall panels S. To make the container shown almost completely assembled in Figure 13, the blanks shown in Figures 14 and 17 wherein scorelines 55 dene corners, may be used. In body 5 an inwardly extending ledge adjacent the upper marginal portion of three of sidewall panels S is provided by folding panels 56 and 56 inwardly on scoreline 57, substantially at right angles to sidewalls S, and by then folding panels 58 and 58' downwardly, upwardly, and inwardly on scorelines 59 so as to underlie and be in contact with panels 56 and 56', while simultaneously folding panels 60 and 6l downwardly so as to lie against sidewalls 8 adjacent the upper and lower marginal edges thereof. Because of the length of panels 60 and 61 either panels 60 may lap over and overlie panels 61 or panels 61 may lap over and overlie panels 60 as shown.
Strip panels 62 each being adapted to extend substantially from the bottom of a corner of the container to the top of a corner of the container and provided in the center thereof with a scoreline 63 adapted to be adjacent to one of scorelines 55, may be then placed over flaps 6i? and 61, as shown in Figure 15, but, as shown in Figures 13 and 14, they may preferably be placed with scorelines 63 in conjunction with scorelines 55 prior to folding aps 56, 58, and 60. Thereby, when said aps are folded in the manner described, strips 62 are incorporated in the structure.
At the corners in the inwardly extending closure supporting ledge formed by panels 56 and 58, reinforcement is provided by not cutting out the material represented by panels 56 and 58 but, instead, by causing this material to be folded downwardly from the upper ledge and upwardly from the lower ledge so as to form inwardly extending triangular reinforcing connections between the ledges adjoining adjacent sidewalls, as shown at 66 and 66.
v7The container Amay be formed fromia single blank by providing corner strips formed integrally with the sidewalls, as described in connection with previous figures and particularly in connection with Figure 1 but in the embodiment shown, material is saved by providing separate corner strips 62 at two of the corners. At a third corner, integral strips are provided by folding panels 64 and 64' backwardly at scoreline 65 and inwardly at scorelines 55 so as to form a pleat-like fold lying against one of sidewalls 8 and integral therewith, extending substantially from the bottom of said corner to the top of said corner. At the corner adapted to form the seam in body .5, the corner may be formed as shown in Figure 16 bycausing panel 67 to extend around the corner formed at adjacent scoreline S5 and to be adhered to the outside of the opposite of sidewall panels 3 whereas ap 7 adjoining the other of sidewall panels 8 may be bent inwardly at the adjacent scoreline 55 to lie against the inside of the first of said sidewalls 8 and may be adhered thereto. Thus an angular corner strip is formed by thicknesses of the material of which sidewalls 3 are made, extending as strips from the bottom to the top of said corner. The bottom of the container may be provided by panel 70 folded upwardly at scoreline 71 and adhered to the bottom surface of the lower inwardly extending closure supporting ledge, said bottom surface being the bottom surface of the lower panels 56. It may be further attached by providing aps 72 extending from three of the marginal edges thereof adapted to be folded upwardly on scorelines 73 and to be adhered to the outer lower portions of sidewalls 8.
A top may be provided as part of the blank shown in Figure 14 by providing panel 75 adapted to be folded downwardly from scoreline 76 and to be adhered at its outer marginal portion to the closure supporting ledge extending inwardly from the upper marginal portions of sidewalls 8 and also to be further secured to the body by flaps 77, folded downwardly on scorelines 78, being adhered to the upper marginal portions of sidewalls 8.
A closure adapted to provide for the removal of the contents of the container by suitable means, such as for example by pouring, may be provided in a portion of top 75 by panel 80 adapted to be folded upward out of the plane of top 75 on scoreline 81 and provided with downwardly extending flaps 82, which, if desired, may not be adhered at all tosidewalls 8.
Another application of the invention is shown by Figures 18 to 2l wherein the container shown in Figure 18, having a body indicated generally by the numeral 5, provided with sidewalls 8, may suitably be formed from the two major blanks shown respectively in Figures 19 and 20 and indicated generally respectively by the numerals S5 and S6 and wherein vertical members according to the invention are provided at two of the 'corners by the addition of strips 4according to the blank 87 shown in Figure 2l. Vertical strips according to the invention are provided at the other two corners by aps 88 and flaps 89.
The tubular body of the container indicated generally as 5 may be made by adhering strips 87 to blank S5 in such manner that the central vertical scoreline 9 on each of strips 37 overlies one of scorelines 9 which separate sidewall panels 3 in blank 85. To make body 5, blank may then be folded on scorelines 9, 9', and 9" while the flaps 89 of blank 86 are folded upwardly on scorelines 9; flaps S3 and S9 may then be adhered to the portions of opposite sidewalls 8 adjacent thecorners defined by scorelines 9 and 9" as shown in Figure 1S to provide vertical corner strips comprising two thicknesses of the material of sidewalls 8, extending substantially from the bottom of said corner to the top of said corner.
A closure supporting ledge extending inwardly from three of sidewalls 8 at the top of the container and also extending inwardly from three of sidewalls 3 at the bottorn of .the container, being .substantially atright angles with and vfiush with the upper marginal edge and the lower marginal edge .of said sidewalls 8 may .beformed in the following manner. Said ledges are Imade by folding panels .14, 16 and 18 .in the manner Idescribed in connection with Figures .1 to 3 on scorelines 15, 17, and 19. Panels 18 .are folded inwardly to underlie closure portion 9.3 instead of overlying top .92 or bottom 90 as do aps 13. Triangular panels 14 and 16' are adapted to be folded into a triangular portion extending inwardly as shown-in Figure 1'8. Thus the material at said corners is integral with said sidewalls and no possibilities are provided for pinpoint leakage, Likewise, Opportunity for pinpoint leakage is eliminated at the other corners by panels 88 and 3.8" which are folded upon the scoreline dividing them, to lie against each other, and which are folded .on the scorelines separating panels 8S from panels 88 or on the scorelines defining panels S8 from panels 14 to lie against and be adhered to either panels 88 or panels 14 respectively. Said bottom closure ledge may suitably support bottom 9b formed from part of blank 86. The upper of said closure supporting ledges is adapted to support the top 91 which may be formed as part of blank S6. Top 91 may consist of stationary portion 92, closure 93, and closure attaching ap 94 depending frorn closure portion 93 and adapted to extend downward alongside and lie against one of sidewall panels and be adhered thereto.
Referring now to 4Figure 22 there is shown another embodiment of the container incorporating the vertical corner strips of my invention. It is provided with sidewalls fi formed into a tubular body indicated generally as 5 from the blank Shown in Figure '23 in the usual manner. Upper and lower marginal edge strip panels 14, 16, and i8 maybe folded in the manner hereinabove described to provide supporting ledges and secure attachment for the top indicated generally as l() and the bottom 106 respectively, portions 18 being adapted to over lie the outer marginal edge portions of said top and bottom on the outer sides thereof and be securely adhered thereto and panels 14 and 16 being adapted to be adhered together to provide closure supporting ledges at the ends of the container.
Also in a manner similarlto that hereinbefore described, strip panels 21 and 23 shown in Figure 23 may be folded and be adhered to sidewalls 3 and to one another to provide the vertical .corner strips of the invention. An additional feature, however, is that pinpoint leakage at the top and bottom 'corners of the container is prevented by the provision of those extensions of strip panels 23 designated as 23' 'and 23". Portions '23 lare adapted to overlie parts of strip panels 14 in such manner that the diagonal scorelines dividing panels 23 and 23 are adapted to overlie the diagonal edges of strip panels 14. Thus when strip panels i4 are folded inwardly and strip panels 16 are then folded outwardly, strip panel 16 being folded down so as to lie against and be adhered to strip panel 14, it will be observed that panels 23 are folded substantially at 90 degrees with relation to sidewall panels 8 and lie between strip panels 14 and 16 and may be adhered thereto. After this operation is completed, the corners of body may be formed by bending on scorelines 24 and as the corners are formed, a bend is made on scoreline 24', separating panels 23', with the result that a small triangular projection is formed, pointing toward the interior of the container and adapted to prevent pin point leakage at the corners thereof by reason of providing solid paper board at the corners instead of providing a point of non-continuous juncture between all adjacent surfaces.
A closure of wide area of suitable size to allow easy removal from the container of bulk materials may be provided by a portion of the top 160 which is adapted to serve as a closure indicated at 103, which may vhinge upwardly out of the plane of top 100 as defined by stationary vportion -101 and which vis adapted .to be secured in a 'closed position by pressure sensitive tape 104 extending thereover and-provided with ends sufiiciently long to extend down over a `portion of the sidewalls 8 so as to allow pressure sensitive surface ii to abut thereagainst. Closure 103 may'be 'further secured in a closed position by adhering flap '102, depending downwardly from closure 103, to the upper marginal portion of one of sidewalls 8.
lt will thus'be seen that my invention is broad in scope and is to be interpreted as extending to all equivalent structures which will be obvious to those skilled in the art and is to be limited only by the claims.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim:
l. in a consumer type container of the character described comprising a tubular body formed from paper board and having iiat sidewalls and angular corners, an end closure supporting ledge on said sidewalls, said ledge being flush with one end of the body and being formed as an integral part of said .sidewalls by the bending of strips connected thereto; a corner defined by two 'flat sidewalls, formed by bending the material of said .sidewalls; said end closure supporting ledge provided at said corner with an integral pleat-lapped portion extending downwardly therefrom said corner having on the inner side thereof adjacent thereto and adhered respectively to each of said sidewalls, a strip ofcontainer material of uniform width extending substantially from the bottom of said corner to the .top of said corner, said downwardly extending portion of said ledge yinteracting with the center portion of the end of said strip adjacent said ledge to provide a liquid .tight corner.
2. in a consumer type container of the character described comprising a tubular body formed from paper board and having flat sidewalls and angular corners, an end closure supporting ledge on said sidewalls, said ledge being tiush with one end of the body and being formed as an integral ,part ofsaid sidewalls by the bending of strips connected thereto; a corner dcned by two fiat sidewalls, formed by Abending the material of said sidewalls; said end closure supporting ledge provided at said corner with an integral pleat-lapped portion extending downwardly therefrom said corner having on the inner side thereof, adjacent thereto and adhered respectively to each of said sidewalls, a strip of material of uniform width formed as an integral part of said sidewalls and extending as a strip substantially from the bottom of said corner to the top of said corner, said downwardly extending portion of said ledge interacting with the center portion of the end of said strip adjacent said ledge to provide a liquid tight corner.
3. ln a consumer type container of the character described comprising a tubular body formed from paper board and having fiat sidewails and angular corners, an end closure supporting ledge on said sidewalls, said ledge being ush with one end of the body and being formed as an integral part of said sidewalls by the bending of strips connected thereto; a corner defined by two fiat sidewalls, formed by bending the material of said sidewalls; said end closure supporting ledge provided at said corner with an integral pleat-lapped portion extending downwardly 'therefrom said corner having on the inner side thereof, adjacent thereto and adhered respectively to each of said sidewalls, two thicknesses of the material of which said sidewalls are made extending as strips of uniform width substantially from the bottom thereof to the top thereof, said strips consisting of pleat-like folds in the material of said sidewalls adjacent said corner, said dovv'nwardly'extending portion of said ledge interacting with the center'portion of the end of said strips adjacent said ledge to provide a liquid tight corner.

In a consumer type container of the character described comprising a tubular body formed from paper board and having fiat sidewalls and angular corners, an end closure'supporting'ledge on said sidewalls, said ledge being-hush with one end of the body and being formed as an integral part of said sidewalls by the bending of strips connected thereto; a corner defined by two flat sidewalls, formed by bending the material of said sidewalls; said end closure supporting ledge provided at said corner with an integral Pleat-lapped portion extending downwardly therefrom said corner characterized by a strip of the material of one of said sidewalls being folded inwardly adjacent said corner so as to lie against the portion of the sidewall immediately adjacent said corner and adherent thereto and by a second strip of the material of said sidewall, adjacent said rst strip but more remote from said sidewall, being folded inwardly so as to lie against and in conjunction with iirst strip and adhered thereto, said second strip integrally attached to a third strip at a bend adapted to form said corner, and a fourth strip integrally attached to said third strip, said third and fourth strips corresponding to said second and rst strips respectively and being adjacent to and adhered to the other of said sidewalls adjacent said corner, said strips being joined one to another in pleat-like folds, said downwardly extending portion of said ledge interacting with the end of said bend in said strips adjacent said ledge to provide a liquid tight corner.

In a consumer type container of the character dcscribed comprising a tubular body formed from paper board and having flat sidewalls and angular corners, an end closure supporting ledge on said sidewalls, said ledge being flush with one end of the body and being formed as an integral part of said sidewalls by the bending of strips connected thereto; a corner defined by two at sidewalls, formed by bending the material of said sidewalls; said end closure supporting ledge provided at said corner with an integral Pleat-lapped portion extending ldownwardly therefrom said corner characterized by having on the inner side thereof strips formed by pleatlike folds in the material of which said sidewalls are made joining said sidewalls together as an integral part thereof at said corner, said downwardly extending portion of said ledge interacting with the center portion of the end of said strips adjacent said ledge to provide a liquid tight corner.
