This invention relates to a novel device for forming work pieces, and is more particularly concerned with a device for making joggles or offsets in metallic members generally used for` structural purposes and having various shapes such as angles, T-member-s, etc.
One `object of this invention is the provision of a device for the foregoing purpose which is relatively simple in structure.
Another object is to provide a device of the foregoing type which is readily assembled land adjusted for the particular o`set `or joggle to be made in a work piece or metallic member.
Yet another aim of the invention is the provision of a j joggling tool or assembly which can `be inexpensively fabricated, and is -dependable in operation.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of this invention will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the acc-ompanying drawings wherein:

According to one embodiment of the invention, a material forming device is provided which comprises a lower and an upper portion, the lower portion including a base and a pair of block assemblies supported adjacent each other on the base. Each of these block assemblies includes yat least two laterally positioned blocks connected together, and means for adju-sting the lateral distance between such blocks to provide a space for insertion of a portion of a material to be formed for holding it in operative relation in the device. Slidably mounted on the base beneath one of the block assemblies is a first wedge member, and means is provided for urging such member along the base to move the last mentioned bloc yassembly normal thereto.
The upper portion of the assembly includes a horizon# tal support having a contact member fixed thereto or integral therewith. A second contact member is also mounted on the support for movement normal thereto, and is adapted to engage the upper surface of the other of the above noted block assemblies. Slidably mounted on the support in operative relation to the second or movable contact member is a second wedge member, means being afforded for urging this member relative to the support to move the second contact member normal thereto. Also included is a means normally urging the second contact member toward the support as pointed out more fully herein-after.
The invention device is adapted to be mounted in ya power source such as a press for movement of the upper portion of the device relative to the lower portion thereof to carry out the operation of forming a bend or joggle in a work piece.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, there is shown a device comprising a lower portion X including a Ibase 10 having positioned thereon a pair of removable block assemblies 12 and 14 located adjacent each other lengthwise of the base. The base has a longitudinally extending groove 16 therein to receive a downwardly extending vertical member 18 atiixed to one side of each of such block lassemblies to maintain them in position on the base, another such member 19 being provided on the opposite side of each of the block assemblies and being arranged to abut one side 21 of base 10 when these assemblies are initially positioned thereon. When mounted in this manner, the two block assemblies 12 and 14 extend substantially to the same height, with their top surfaces essentially in the same plane.
Each of the block assemblies 12 and 14, as particularly seen in Fig. 2, is composed of two laterally positioned die blocks 20 and 22 held together by a number of adjustable screws 24 threaded into both blocks, with a single centrally positioned screw 26 threaded into only one of the blocks 20. This arrangement permits the blocks 20 and 22 of each such assembly to be adjustably separated to form a space 28 therebetween of a desired width for insertion therein of one edge or portion of a work piece to be bent, in order to hold such work piece in operative relation on the block assemblies. Thus, for example, if it is desired to increase the width of space 28 to accommodate a work piece or metallic member of a particular thickness, the screws 24 of each block assembly are first loosened approximately to the same extent and thereafter the central screw 26 is tightened to cause the blocks to be urged outwardly relative to each other and thus to become further separated until the desired thickness of space 2S is obtained, following which the other screws 24 are again tightened. It is obvious that as the blocks are urged away from one another, blocks 22 will remain in position due to engagement of members 18 in grooves 16, and consequently, members 20 will move laterally carrying associated members 19 therewith out of engage-Y ment with side 21 as was the case when the block assemblies were initially positioned on base 10.
The surface at one end of base 10 is upwardly inclined in an inward direction as indicated by numeral 30 for engagement with the bottom of a similarly inclined surface 32 of a wedge 34. The wedge is Slidably mounted between such inclined surface of the base and the bottom 35 of block assembly 12, the upper horizontal surface 36 of wedge 34 engaging the bottom surface of such block assembly. It is seen that when the wedge 34 is in its extreme` outer position illustrated in Fig. 1, the upper horizontal surface thereof is in line with the horizontally extending portion 37 of the surface at the other end of the base, and the upper horizontal surface 36 of the j wedge under these conditions just touching the bottom 3 35 of the block assembly 12, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. When the wedge 34 is moved inwardly, thus raising the upper surface 36 thereof, block assembly 12 is raised in a direction normal to the base to a height above that ofthe adjacent block assembly 14.
To permit selective control of the longitudinal displacement of wedge 34, a plate member 38 is connected by suitable means (not shown) to the end of base 10, the plate having .a threaded passage for receiving a screw 40 which engages a downwardly extending end member 42 of wedge 34. The end .of screw 40 engaging member 42 .is enlarged as at 44 to maintain the screwin contact with such wedge and prevent removal therefrom, .the enlarged portion 44 of the screw being accommodated Ain .arecess 45 formed in the wedge. Thus, rotation of screw 4l) will cause wedge 34 to move .either inwardly .or outwardly depending on the direction of rotation of the screw and thus in 4turn .bring about upwardor downward movement of block assembly 12 in slidable engagement with wedge 34. An upwardly extending member 47 is attached to .the .side 21 of base 10 to VVserve as .a guide Vfor wedge .34 during longitudinal movementthercof.
The upper portion Y ofthe ydevice vshown in the `drawings .is in the .form of an elongated support member 46 of substantially the same .overall .dimensions .as the Vlower portion .X of the device, a longitudinally extendingmem- .ber 48 being provided at the top of such support .member for insertion into a power source such as .a press to hold the upper portion ofthe device in spaced relation .to the lower .portion thereof. .At one end -of support lmember 46 adjacent movable block lassembly 12 is a contact member` having a horizontal surface 50 which is adapted to `engage the .upper .surface 52 of block assembly 12 and a workpiece operatively positioned thereon.
Toward the other end of .support member 46 adjacent block .assembly 14 is .provided a recess 54 having an upwardly .inclinedsurface 56 terminating at the end of the support member inrarplatemernber S55-connected thereto, the plate having a threaded passage for receiving a screw 60 which engagessan upwardly extending end member 62 of asecond wedge 64 :positioned in the recess. The end-of screw 60 engaging member .62 of the second wedge is enlargedas at-66 Vto hold the screw in attachment therewith and preventits removal from the wedge, the enlarged -portion 66 ofthe screw beingaccommodated in a'recess 67 ofthis wedge. Wedge 64 has a sloping or inclined surface 68 'which is `adapted -to make slidable contact with -the similarly inclined surface j56 of recess 54m supportmember 46.
.Positioned about that end of support `member 46 in which wedge 64 is .located is a U-shaped contact member 70 having .upwardly extending legs 72 located closely adjacent .andin slidable relation to theopposite sides of wedge 64 and'that portion of support member 46 adjacent thereto. .Member .701is mounted for movement normal to support member 46, -and the lower surface 74 of the horizontal midportion 75 vof this U-shaped member Vis adapted to engage the upper surface 76 of block assembly 14 and a work piece positioned thereon, the inner surface 78 of such midportion being in slidable engagement with the horizontal lower surface 80 of wedge 64. Such slidable engagement is maintained by means of a pair of elongated fasteners 82 threaded at one end into the lower midportion 75 of U-shaped member 70 and extending upwardly through longitudinal slots 84 in wedge 64 (see Fig. 4) and into recesses 85 in the upper portion of .support member 46. These fasteners .have slidable engagement with the edges of slots 84 of wedge 64 and with the adjacent portions of support member 46 through which the fasteners pass. A compression spring S6 is mounted in each of these recesses surrounding the euds of fasteners 82, the upper ends of these springs abutting a nut 88 threadably engaging the upper ends of the fasteners. Hence, the inner upper surface 78 of midportion of the U-shaped member is at all times urged upwardly into contact with the lower surface of wedge 64 by means of springs 86.
From the structure noted above, it is seen that when wedge 64 is in its extreme outer position as shown in Fig. l, the midportion 75 of U-shaped member 70 is located within recess 54 of support member 46, the lower surface 74 of member 70 being in lalignment with the lower horizontal contact surface 50 at the other end of member 46. On rotation of screw 60, wedge 64 moves longitudinally in relation to support member 46 depending on the direction of rotation of the screw. Thus, when screw 60 is rotated in a direction to move wedge 64 inwardly, the U-shaped member 70 will be urged downwardly against the action of springs 86 toward lblock assembly 14, and on rotation of screw 60 in the opposite direction to cause wedge 64 to move outwardly toward the end of support member 46, U-shaped member 70 is urged upwardly by the action of springs 86 with the'inner surface 78 of the lower midportion of this lmember in continuous slidable contact with the horizontal surface 80 of wedge 64. Downwardlyextending members 89 are attached to opposite sides of support member 46 adjacent wedge 64 to serve as guides therefor .during longitudinal movement thereof.
In the operation of the device shown in Figs. 1 to 4, the lower and upper portions X and Y, respectively, of the device are placed in a press represented by numeral 91 (see Figs. 5 and 6) and separated from each other. The space 28 between the two blocks 20 and 22 in each of the block assemblies 12 and 14 is then adjusted for the desired thickness of a work piece or structural member to be bent by loosening adjustable screws 24 of the block assemblies and tightening the center screws 26 thereof the desired amount. The wedge screw 40 on the lower portion X of the device is then adjusted to move wedge 34 inward suiciently to raise block assembly 12 to provide the required difference in 'height or offset between block assemblies 12 and 14 corresponding to the depth of bend or joggle 92 to be made in the work piece. Then the upper portion Y of the device is brought down on the top of the lower portion X thereof with the horizontal contact surface 50 of support member 46 in contact with the upper surface 52 of block assembly 12. Screw 60 is then adjusted to move wedge 64 inward suftciently so that member 70 has moved downward to rlnake contact with the upper surface 76 of block assembly 4 With block assemblies 12 and 14 thus offset from each other and U-shaped member 70 correspondingly offset below surface 50 of support member 46, the upper portion `Y of the device is lifted free of the lower portion X, and one leg 93 of the structural member or angle 90 to be'bent is then inserted into space 28 vbetween they blocks in the respective block assemblies, while the horizontal leg 95 of member 90 is made to rest along a portion thereof on the upper surface 52 of block assembly 12, the remainder .of leg 95 being suspended above the upper surface 76 of block assembly 14, as indicated in phantom lines in Fig. 5. The upper portion Y of the device is then brought down under force with surfaces 50 and 74 thereof making contact with the work piece 90 on the lower portion X of the device, the desired bend 92 in the work piece being formed when the lower surface 74 of U-shaped contact member 70 engages that portion of member 90 located above block `assembly 14 and forces it downward until it comes into contact with vthe upper surface 76 of such block assembly.
It is understood that work pieces or structural members to be bent in the device vof the invention may constitute shapes other than angles and may, for example, bem the form of T-members and the like. Further, in order that the block assemblies -12 and 14'may accommodate work pieces, e. g. yin the form of angles, having dnferentradiinf 'culvature at the intersection foftheir 'surfaces, as 'shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the block assemblies hereof may each be provided with blocks 94 and 96 each having a longitudinal groove 98 along the top thereof. T-shaped members 100 and 102 are adapted -to be positioned on the top of blocks 94 and 96 with the lower portions 104 of each of these members resting in grooves 98 of the blocks. Set screws 106 are provided adjacent the top edges of blocks 94 and 96 to hold the T-members in place. The upper opposite longitudinal edges 108 and 110 of T-member 100, and the corresponding edges 112 and 114 of T-member 102 are all rounded 'at a different radius of curvature so that by reversing each of these T-members end to end in their positions in grooves 98 the block assemblies can accommodate four different work pieces or angles such as represented by numeral 90, which diier from each other in the radius of the rounded portion or intersection 116 (see Fig. 6) between the angular surfaces of such work pieces. For example, the upper edge 108 of T-member 100 may be rounded to a radius of 1/s and the opposite upper edge 10 thereof to an angle of %2", while the upper longitudinal edge 112 of T-member 102 may be rounded to a radius of 5/32 and the opposite edge 114 thereof to a radius of From the foregoing, it is seen that the invention provides a forming tool or device which is relatively simple in structure for making bends or joggles in work pieces generally of a metallic type. The device comprises a minimum of component parts, is readily assembled and adjusted to make the depth of bend desired, and is dependable in operation.
Obviously many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in the light of the above teachings. It is therefore to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described.
I claim:
l. A material forming device which comprises a lower and an upper portion, said lower portion including a base, a pair of block assemblies supported adjacent each other on said base, each of said block assemblies including at least two laterally positioned blocks connected together, means for adjusting the lateral distance between said blocks to provide a space for insertion of a portion of a material to be formed for holding same in operative relation in said device, a first wedge member slidably mounted on said base beneath one of said block assemblies and means for urging said first wedge member along said base to move said last named block assembly normal thereto; said upper portion including a horizontal support, a contact member fixed to said support and adapted to engage the upper surface of said last named block assembly, a second contact member mounted for movement normal to said support and adapted to engage the upper surface of the other of said block assemblies, a second wedge member slidably mounted on said support in operative relation to said second contact member, and means for urging said second wedge member relative to said support to move said second contact memberV normal thereto.
2. A material forming device which comprises a lower and an upper portion adapted to be mounted for movement relative to each other, said lower portion including a base, a pair of block assemblies supported adjacent each other on said base, each of said block assemblies including at least two laterally positioned blocks connected together, means for adjusting the lateral distance between said blocks to provide a space for insertion of a portion of a material to be formed for holding same in operative relation in said device, a rst wedge member slidably mounted on said base beneath one of said block assemblies and means for urging said first wedge member along said base to move said last named block assembly normaly thereto; said upper portion including a horizontal support, a contact member fixed to said support and adapted to engage the upper surface of said last named block d assembly, a second contact member mounted for movement normal to said support and adapted to engage the upper surface of the other of said block assemblies, a second wedge member slidably mounted on said support in operative relation to said second contact member, means for urging said second wedge member relative to said support to move said second contact member normal thereto and means normally urging said second contact member toward said support.
3. A material forming device which comprises a lower an upper portion adapted to be mounted for movement relative to each other, said lower portion including a base, a pair of removable block assemblies supported adjacent each other lengthwise on said base, each of said block assemblies including two laterally positioned blocks connected together, means for adjusting the lateral distance between said blocks to provide a space for insertion of a portion of a work piece to be formed for holding same in operative relation on said block assemblies, a first wedge member at one end of said base slidably mounted between said base and the lower portion of one of said block assemblies to permit movement thereof normal to said base, and means for urging said first wedge member along said base to move said last named block assembly normal thereto to a height above said other block assembly, said upper portion including a horizontal support, a contact member fixed to the lower portion of one end of said support for engagement with the upper surface of said one block assembly and with a work piece operatively positioned thereon, a second contact member mounted at the other end of said support for movement normal to and beneath said support for engagement with the upper surface of said other of said block assemblies and with a work piece in contact there-` with, a second wedge member slidably mounted between said support and said second contact member to permit movement thereof normal to said support, means for urging said second wedge member relative to said support to move said second contact member normal thereto, and means connected to said last named member normally urging same upwardly toward said support.
4. A device for making angular olf-sets or bends in metal work pieces, which comprises a lower and an upper portion adapted to be mounted in a power source for movement relative to each other, said lower portion including a base, a pair of removable block assemblies positioned adjacent each other lengthwise on said base, each of said block assemblies including two laterally positioned blocks held together by a plurality of adjustable fasteners for selectively adjusting the lateral distance between said blocks to provide a space for insertion of one portion of a metal work piece to be bent for holding same in operative relation in said device, a first wedge slidably mounted on said base at one end thereof, the upper surface of said wedge Supporting one of said block assemblies for movement normal to said base, and a screw for urging said wedge along said base, whereby on movement of said wedge inwardly, said one block assembly is raised to a height above said other block assembly; said upper portion of said device including a support member of substantially the same overall dimensions as said lower portion, a contact member at one end of said support member and adapted to engage the upper surface of said one block assembly, a second contact member at the other end of said support member mounted for movement normal to and beneath said support member and adapted to engage the upper surface of said other block assembly, a second wedge slidably mounted on the other end of said support member to permit said normal movement of said second contact member, a screw for urging said second wedge relative to said support member to move said second contact member downwardly therefrom, and resilient means cooperating with said second contact member to urge same in an upward direction.
5. A device for making bends in metal work -pieces which comprises a lower and an upper portion adapted to be mounted in a power source for movement relative tov each other, said lower portion including a base, a pair of removable block assemblies supported adjacent each other lengthwise on said base, each of said block assemblies including ttwo laterally positioned forming blocks connected together, screw means for adjusting the lateral distance between said blocks to provide a space for insertion of one edge of a work piece to be formed for holding same in operative relation on said block assemblies, a first wedge member at one end of said base slidably mounted between said base and the lower portion of one of said block assemblies to permit movement thereof normal to said base, land screw means for urging said rst wedge member along said base to move said last named block assembly normal thereto to a height above said other block assembly; said .upper portion including7 a horizontal support, a contact member fixed to the lower portion of one end of said support for engagement with the upper surface of said one block assembly and with a work piece operatively positioned thereon, a second contact member mounted at the other end of said support for movement normal to and beneath said support for engagement with the upper surface of said other block assembly and with a work piece in contact therewith, a second wedge member mounted for slidable movement between said support and said second contact member to permit movement thereof normal to said support, screw means for urging said second wedge member relative -to said support to move said second contact member downwardly therefrom, said second contact member being connected to said support by fasteners passing through longitudinal slots in said second wedge member, and spring means surrounding said fasteners and disposed in said support member for normally urging said second contact member upwardly toward said support member and into close engagement with said second wedge member.
6. A device for forming bends in metal work pieces which comprises a lower and an upper portion adapted to be mounted in a power source for movement relative to each other, said lower portion including a base, a pair of removable block assemblies supported adjacent each other lengthwise on said base, each of said block assemblies including two laterally positioned disc blocks connected together by a plurality of adjustable fasteners, screw means cooperating with said fasteners for selectively adjusting the lateral distance between said blocks to provide a space for insertion of a portion of a metal work piece to be formed for holding same in operative relation on said block assemblies, the blocks in said block assemblies being so aligned that said space is continuous between said assemblies, a lirst wedge member slidably mounted on said base at one end thereof, the upper surface of said wedge supporting one of said block assemblies, and screw means for urging said rst wedge member along said base to move said last named block asembly normal hereto to a height above said other block assembly; said nppcr'portion including a horizontal support, a contact member fixed to the lower portion of one end of said support for engagement with the upper surface of said one bloei; assembly and with a work piece operatively positioned thereon, a second contact member mounted at the other end of said support for movement normal to and beneath said support for engagement with the upper surface of said other block assembly and with aor piece in contact therewith, a secc-nd wedge member Amounted for slidable movement between said support and said second contact member to permit movement thereof normal to said support, screw means for urging said second wedge member relative to said support to move said second contact member downwardly therefromaidfsecond Contact member being connected to said support by fasteners passing throughlongitudinal slots in saidsecond wedge member, and spring means surrounding said fasteners and disposed in said support member for normally urging said second ,Contact niember upwardly toward said support member and into close engagement with said second wedge member.
7. A material forming device which comprises a-lower and an upper portion adapted to be mounted for movement relative to each other, said lower portion including a base, a pair of removable block assemblies supported adjacent each other lengthwise on said base, each of said bloclt assemblies including at least two laterally positionerd forming blocks connected together, means for adjusting the lateral distance kbetween said blocks to provide a space for insertion of a portion of a work piece to be formed for holding same in operative relation on said block assemblies, removable means on said blocks to permit vsaid block assemblies to accommodate work pieces thereon in the form of angle members having different radii of curvature at the intersection of their surfaces, a 'first wedge member at one end of said base slidably mounted'between said -base and 'the lower portion of one of said block assemblies to permit movement thereof normal to said base, and vmeans for urging said first wedge member along said base to move said last named block assembly normal thereto to a height above said other block assembly, said upper portion including a horizontal support, a contact memberfixed to the lower portion of oneend of said support for engagement with the upper surface of said one block assembly and with a work piece operatively positioned thereon, a second Contact member mounted lat the other end of said support for movement normal'to `and lbeneath said support for engagement with theupper `surface of said other of said block assemblies and a Work piece -in contact therewith, a second wedge member slidably mounted between said support and said second contact member to permit movement thereof normal to said support, means for urging said second wedge member relative to said support to move said second contact member normal thereto and means connected to said last named member normally urging same upwardly t0- ward said support.
8. A device for making bends in metal work pieces, which comprises a lower and an upper portion adapted to be mounted in a power source for movement relative to each other, said lower portion including a base, a pair of removable block assemblies positioned adjacent each other lengthwise on said base, each of said block assemblies including two laterally positioned blocks held together by a plurality of adjustable screws threaded into both of said blocks and having a single screw threaded into one of said blocks to separate them when said adjustable screws are loosened to form a space between said blocks for insertion therein of an edge portion of a work piece to be bent for holding same in operative relation on said block assemblies, an end member on one end of said base, a screw positioned in said end member, a wedge engaged by said screw and slidably supported on said base, the upper surface of said wedge supporting the bottom of one of said block assemblies for movement normal to said base, whereby on movement of said screw in a direction to urge said wedge inward, said one block assembly will be raised to a height above said other block assembly, said upper portion of said device including an elongated support member of substantially the same overall dimensions as said lower portion, a contact member fixed at one end of said support member and adapted to engage the upper surface of said one block assembly and a work piece operatively positioned thereon, a second contact member having a U shape mounted -for movement normal to and beneath the other end of said support member and adapted to engage the upper surface of said other block assembly and a work piece in contact therewith, an end member o n the other end of said support member, a second screw positioned therein, a second wedge engaged by said screw and slidably mounted between said support member and said second contact member, a plurality of fasteners connected to said last named member and extending through longitudinal slots in said second wedge and into said support member, and a compression spring surrounding the end of each of said fasteners and positioned in a recess in said support member, said springs normally urging said second contact member toward said second wedge and said support member.
9. A device for making bends in metal work pieces which comprise a lower and an upper portion adapted to be mounted in a power source for movement relative to each other, said lower portion including a base, a pair of removable block assemblies positioned adjacent each other lengthwise on said base, each of said block assemblies extending substantially to the same height and including two laterally positioned blocks held together by a plurality of adjustable screws threaded into both of said blocks and having a single screw threaded into one of said blocks to separate them when said adjustable screws are loosened to thus form a space between said blocks for insertion therein of a portion of a work piece to be bent for holding same in operative relation on said block assemblies, the blocks in said block assemblies being so positioned that said spaces in said block assemblies are in alignment, a first wedge at one end of said base slidably mounted between said base and the lower portion of one of said block assemblies to provide movement thereof normal to said base, a screw adjustably mounted at the end of said base adjacent said wedge and having one end thereof in contact with said Wedge whereby on rotation of said last named screw in a direction to urge said wedge inward, said last named block assembly will be raised to a height above that of the other block assembly; said upper portion of said device including an elongated horizontal support member of substantially the same overall dimensions as said lower portion, a contact member xed to the lower portion of one end of said support member adjacent said one block assembly and being adapted to engage the upper surface of said last named block assembly and a work piece operatively positioned thereon, a second contact member having a U shape and positioned about the other end of said support member adjacent said other block assembly, said second contact member being mounted for movement normal to and beneath said support member and being adapted to engage the surface of said other block assembly and a work piece placed in contact therewith, a second wedge slidably mounted between said support member and said second contact member to provide movement thereof normal to said support member, a screw adjustably mounted at the other end of said support member adjacent said second wedge and having one end thereof in contact with said Wedge to cause movement thereof relative to said support member, a plurality of threaded fasteners connected at one end to said contact member and extending upwardly through longitudinal slots in said second wedge and into said support member, a recess in said support member surrounding the other ends of each of said threaded fasteners, a plurality of nuts engaging said other ends of said last named fasteners and a compression spring positioned in each said recess and surrounding said other end of each of said threaded fasteners one -end of said springs abutting said nuts, whereby on rotation of the screw associated with said second wedge in a direction to move same inwardly said second contact member is forced downward against the action of said springs and on rotation of said last named screw in a direction to move said last named wedge outwardly said last named contact member is urged upwardly into engagement with said second wedge by said springs.
