SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,960, dated June 5, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Belit known that I, HORACE E. Hnnwoon, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thill-Couph'ngs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all theflgures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement, part being removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly in section, through the line :1? :12, Fig. 1. Fig. 3-is a plan view of the thill-iron.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the attachment of thills to vehicles and their removal therefrom, and also to prevent ratfling.
The invention consists in a thillcoupling constructed with an arm formed upon the arm of the axle-clip bow, having recesses and an L-groove formed in it, and provided with a perforated lug and a separable arm having recesses and a flanged base, and provided with a perforated lug to receive the screw-bolt that fastens the two arms together, clamping between them the ball formed upon the neck of the thill-iron, so that the thills will be held securely and without rattling, and can be easily and quickly attached, as will be hereinafter fully described.
1A is the axle of a vehicle. B is the bow, and C is the yoke of the axle-clip. Upon the outer arm of the bow B is formed an arm, D, the outer side of the outer part of which is rounded off, as shown in Fig. 2. The inner side of the arm D is in line with the center of the arm of the bow B, is vertical, and has a semispherical recess, E, formed in it. In the base of the arm D is formed an L-groove, F, to receive the flanged base of the separable arm G, as shown in Fig. 2. The outer side of the arm G is rounded off, and its inner side is vertical and has a semi-spherical recess, H, formed in it, which, in connection with. the recess E in the arm D, forms a spherical recess to receive the ball 1, formed upon the end of the thill-iron J. The thill-iron J is made with a cylindrical neck,'K, and its outer ture of the rear part of the thill L, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Upon the outer ends of the arms D G are formed lugs M N, in one of which is formed a screw-hole and in the other a smooth hole to .the arms D G are formed recesses I, which together form a slot, through which the neck K of the thill-iron J passes, and along which the said neck moves as the thills are raised and lowered.
In the adjacent faces of the rear parts of the arms D G, along the rear edges of the re cesses E H, from the'rear end of the slot P to the lower edges of the said arms D G, are formed grooves Q, forming a channel through which any dust that may enter the slot P can escape.
The thills are attached by placing the balls I of the thill-irons'J in the recesses E of the arms D. The flanges of the arms G are then placed in the grooves F, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2,
The thills are detached by taking out the screw-bolts O and removing the arm G. With this construction thills will beheld in place securely and without rattling, and can be easily and quickly attached and detached when required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.. A thill coupling constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the arm D, formed upon the arm of the axle-clip bow, having recesses E P Q and L-groove F, and provided with a perforated H P Q. and flanged base, and provided with a perforated lug, N, the bolt 0, and the thilliron J, ha-ving ball I and neck K, as set forth.
