PROCESS OF AND APPARATUS FOR DEOD O RIZING ORGANIC SUBSTANCES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,955, dated June 5, 1883.

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM S. Harnnwav, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deansville, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Atmospheric Deodorizer, of which the following is a specification.
The present invent-ion relates to a method and apparatus for deodorizing or purifying organic bodies, such as tainted meats. ran ei d butter, and other analogous objects.
The invention consists in immersing the object tobe deodorized in water or other. liquid and forcing atmospheric air through the same. \Vhen impure bodies are immersed in pure water and air is forced into the same by a bel' lows, pump, or other apparatus, the oxygen of the air serves to attack any impurities or pot sons more actively than under ordinary conditions. I also propose to cool the air, whereby a greater amount of oxygen. is held in the water, thereby insuring a more speedy action of the oxygen upon the impure bodies immersed in the water. The rationale of my process seems to be that the water becomes a con ductor for the oxygen, and holds the latter dis tributed therethrough, so as to cause a speedy attack of the oxygen upon the objects im mersed in the water for purification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of an apparatus by which my invention may be carried into effect. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a section of a small bellows for use by hand.
Referring to Fig. l, A A represent parts of a suitable frame or table, and B B bellows mounted thereon, connected by operating-rods (7 C with a beam, D, by means of which a movement is imparted to the said bellows. If the bellows are to be operated by direct pressure applied to their upper surfaces alternately, cords may be substituted for the rods C C. If, on the other hand, the forcing as well as the filling stroke is appliedto thebellows by means of the beam D, rigid rods will be requisite, or some indirect connection by which the foreing-pressure will be applied. The form of 'bellows here shown in Fig. 1 is well adapted for working with the feet with slight labor, the operator standing with one foot on each bellows B B, bearing on them alternately, and allowing each to rise while the other is depressed. In cases where it is desirable to reduce the tem ierature of the air used in the apparatus 'be filled at each stroke with air forced by at mospheric pressure through the-ice-chest E and cha mber F, and the cold air will at the next stroke be driven through the discharge-pipe l and nozzle 1 into the deodoriziug-tank J, below the surface of the water or other liquid therein. The nozzle 1 delivers the air under neath a perforated false bottom, K, by which it' is distributed over the area of the tank.
A removable screen or grating, L, is employed for the purpose of confining meat, butter, or any other article to be treated under the surface of the liquid in the tank.
In proceeding on a small scale, a hand-bellows, B suchas is represented inFig. 3, may be used with similar effect. M in Fig. 1 represents a siphon-pipe for discharging ice-water from the bottom of the tank. N represents a body of cotton or other filtering material for straining the incoming air.
By means of my apparatus I am enabled to purify impure bodies or substances immersed therein, such rancid butter, or butter immoved, together with accumulated acids or gases arising therefrom.
The ice-chest may be dispensed with where it is not desirable to cool the material under treatment.

I am aware that it is not new in the process of cheese-making to cool the milk and deprive it of animal odors by forcing air through the same; also, that air has been forced through is: cheese for drying and purifying the same while being worked and drained of whey.
