L. H. PRIEDBURG.
TREATMENT OF OILS AND FATS.
Patented Oct. 21, 1884.
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUDWIG HEINRICH FRIEDBURG, OE NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, 0F ONEHALE To THE UNITED STATES COTTON SEED CLEANING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TREATMENT OF OILS AND FATS.
BPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,735, dated October 21, 1884.
Application filed March 1, 1884. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUDWIG H. FRIEDBURG of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and 5 useful Improvement in Treatment of Oils and Fats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the treatment of oils IO and fats, particularly cotton-seed oil, and has for its purpose a reduction of the oil to a more liquid form by the removal of solid fats (commonly known as stearic orsolid acids) therefrom. p I 5 The invention consists in subjecting the oil sprayed into the top of a chamber or hollow vertical cylinder to the chilling action of air escaping under pressure.
The accompanying drawing shows in verti- 20 cal section a cylinder suitable for the purpose.
Oil is brought from the pipe at, which terminates in a perforated tube, into the top of this cylinder, which maybe twenty feet high, more or less, and falls in the form of spray toward 25 the bottom. Through the pipe. 11 air is admitted from a suitable compressor or tank, and
has its escape in the midst of the spray of oil, and causes the stearic or other solid acid to separate therefrom. The whole mass falls into a suitable receptacle, B, in the bottom of the 0 cylinder. This vessel may be an ordinary centrifugal machine with adouble mantel, the inner mantel being a sieve covered with burlap or canvas of proper mesh. This centrifugalv vessel should be set in motion by the centrifu- 3 5 gal action, and the stearic and liquid oil are thereby separated.
I claim as my invention The hereinbefore-described process of treating oils or fats, consisting in spraying said oils 0 or fats into the top of a cylinder and in discharging into the spray of oil a current of air ,under compression, whereby the oil or fat is chilled and the stearic or other acids separated, substantially as described. 4 5
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LUDWIG HEINRICH FRIEDBURG.
