. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES T. WIGKERSHAMJOF RED OAK, town.
MECHANICAL MIOVEMENT.
smmmmo forming art of Letters Patent No. 278,644, dated May 29,1883.
To allwhom itmag concern.-
Be itknown that I, JAMES 'rIWmKE'RsHAM,
of Red Oak, in the county of Montgomery and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing, which forms part of this speciflea-tion.
My invention relates to an improvement in mechanical movements 5 and it consists in the combination of a connecting-rod which is to be applied to' the source of power, a short pivoted lever, a conneeting-rod,a long lever, and a connecting-rod applied to the end of the long lever for connection with the machine thatis to be driven, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
motors to operate machinery that it could not The ob'ect of my invention" is to combine together a. number of levers and place them between the. motive powenand themachine that is to be driven, and thus obtain a suffi: eient increase of power to enable small light Application filed January 30, 1883. (No model.)
shifted back and forth, according as a greater- .or less leverage is required. Fastened to they short lever B, at any suitable distance from its pivot, is the connecting-rod O, which unites the short lever. to the shorter end of the long lever D, which is pivoted at F upon any suitable support. To the; outer end of the long lever, which is provided with a series of Y holes, is attached the connecting-rod I, which will be unitedjat its outer end with the machine which is -to be driven. By adjusting this connecting-rod back and forth upon the outer lever, agreater or less leverage is obtained. p
' When the 'treadle or other motive powerv is set in motion the movement is imparted to the connecting-rod at the end of the long lever,
alight motor can be made to run heavy machinery.
Having thus described my invention', I clai-m-- I I As a mechanical movement, the combination of the connectingerod A, lever B,'connecting-rod (J, lever D, and connecting-rod I,sub-- stantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in
